Modern Fantasy Idea

Anyway, so I have been thinking on and off about a modern fantasy RPG, but I'm have some trouble getting it off the ground but here's what I've got so far.

As the end of the year of 2012 grew closer and closer people began to worry.

What was going to happen?

Were they all going to die?

Finally the date December 20th, 2012 arrived, The people of Earth awaited their fate.
be it death or something else.

As the moment arrived something happened.
Absolutely Nothing.

There was anger, relief, and many other feelings as well. But listen! The following week several odd occurrences happened.

High forms of technology started to fail.

Sailors reported odd things at sea.

Scientists began reporting an odd element in the air.

Members of an online forum mysteriously vanished.

And at the end of the week everything shut down.

Yes, everything from computers to airplanes to cell phones just stopped working.

Naturally from the people there was absolute panic, desperate attempts from the government to establish communications were met with only silence.

From the United States there was no way to establish communications with either Hawaii or Alaska, but talks between the US, Canada, and Mexico determined that they must launch boats to see if the could contact overseas countries.

Before they got halfway out to sea,

A giant beast appeared from the sea and the ships disappeared into its maw.

Silence.

Then the screams began.

As the years went by mysterious humanoid beings were reported seen inland.

But due to being busy with sea monsters and the current situation they were in the reports were completely ignored.

As the decades spun by, new forms of flora and fauna appeared, some were passive, even peaceful, others weren't. Eventually, the mysterious element in the air was identified as strongly compatible with certain parts of the human brain in certain people.

The substance began to be called,

Magic

Scientists, firmly believing this was not magic called it Arcanum.

Further experimentation, yielded results, these people could move things, influence people, even bend the elements to their will.

They became irritated with the constant experimentation and demanded to be released.

The Scientists, pressured by human rights activists, agreed to this.

The users of Arcanum eventually gathered together and, calling themselves Arcanists, [or Mages, or shamans, even today they still can't decide] Formed their own communities in seclusion, away from other people to explore their newfound power. One particular Arcanist, Shaman Aranick, gathered the various native peoples to him and persuaded them to seek their own destiny to form their own communities once more. They agreed and calling themselves the Seekers of Destiny formed in the Great Plains, but along with the Arcanist's Sanctuary remained allied to the United States.

Each new faction found new forms of life, but no sentient beings just yet [but some of the animals were strangely intelligent].

For centuries this was how things went with Canada and Mexico constantly being forced to push back their own borders when they were assaulted by an unknown
force that they had no way of fighting due its high speed and tactics.

At last, numerous thing occurred at once, a strange folk were discovered in the mountains they called themselves the Bosmer, or Elves and were mildly xenophobic and condescending but warmed up to humans, particularly the Hunters of the Native Americans and the numerous Arcanists around the countries due to similar lifestyles and abilities. As they friendship between the various communities and countries went on a group of Arcanists, Scientists, and Elves gathered together and discussed the current situations and began working on something.

They eventually announced to the public at large, they were making an aircraft powered by a Arcanum and fuel combination very similar looking to zeppelins of old. as production of the Huge Airship continues the various peoples and races of North America look to the future to see what awaits them.

This my friends is Modern Fantasy

Now, Thoughts?

what weapons are there what clasess/races are avliable its a beautifull setting but thers none of the "math componets" what system do you want to use you need the technicals and all of that sounded like a great campiagn for lvl 1(begging of changes) to so on depending on your class

i like it but its just a start ill be more than happy to help you even but it is a start what are you looking for the forum to say idea on exspansion problems ????
were missing alot of info here

Well the idea is largely incomplete, but races and subraces are as of now,

Humans- American, Tribal, TFF (Maybe).
Elves- Wood
Orcs.

Classes include your basic RPG classes Fighter, Arcanist, Ranger, and so on, but one class I've come up with is the Dictomancer, They use the POWER OF WORDS!!!11,

As in they rant at you and a large physical representation of the words come crashing down on your head.

I'll probably need some help planing out creatures and random encounters, and such.

But the Campaign is probably going to be measured in 'Episodes' the first will involve finding live sources of Arcanum across the country, for fuel for the airship and patrolling the southern Mexican border and rooting out the source of the problem.

Math stuff i might not even have at all, but if I did i would go with the D20.

I see, well then maybe tomorrow when I get some books on RPGs I'll properly decide on a math system. Maybe.

more classes
Well yeah, thats pretty much going to happen, see, this is pretty much a baseline for me to work off of, build up from it ya know? I have some ideas spinning around in my head but nothing definite. Such as Paladins from various religions, and so on.

Fighter pretty much starts as a generic Archer/ Warrior guy and is average in pretty much everything, and YOU are the one who decides what (s)he is going to be. Swordmaster, Magic Fighter, Tank, Ect, The path is yours young one! How will you shape your destiny?

Have you ever considered looking up the D20 Modern campaign supplement Urban Arcana as a source of inspiration. Another source of ideas would be the cyberpunk fantasy Shadowrun.

For conspiracy-themed fantasy Dark Matter or Delta Green material could be useful.

Thanks! I'll look into those.

Basic 19th 18th Century Guns are around but, this is why you go out with a shield or something, Bullets can't get through Arcanum Shields or somesuch. Alternately, use Shonen Physics! Deflect the bullets with your sword or something! Or make sure they don't get the chance to shoot in the first place.

Also you'll pull off crazy shit as you get near the level cap, as you unconsciously start drawing on the Arcanum in the air to fuel your attacks, Swing your sword in frustration at a hidden snipers location? Fwoosh! Vacuum Blade just sliced him in half! Basically you start getting Crazy Awesome! Literally.

Well thats kind of what i've been trying to say. I don't have ANYTHING fleshed out. This is why i'm looking for help to help me flesh things out.

I just have that basic outline and some ideas and i'm running blind into the unknown.

Well, I'm going to go out and get some sourcebooks, in the meantime i'm probably won't continue this thread for quite awhile due to circumstances beyond my control.

So yeah.

THis looks promising!!! Suggestion... use a rock-scissors-paper setup on both class and race!!!

It's interesting in principle, but there are some issues.

You have decades between the fall of technology and the rise of magic. and yet the governments of the Americas are apparently not only holding together but interacting.

That's going to be a problem. Planes don't work. why? do lift mechanics no longer function? birds no longer fly?

or is it internal combustion and electricity? then no cars, no trains other than steam.

regardless, mass transport is an issue, at least for the years it takes to build infrastructure. big huge continent spanning governments? Probably not going to last. Food transport will also fail, and people are going to die, in droves. lots of dead, probably mass panic, relatively small number of government workers and peacekeepers to citizens means any place with dense population is going to be a deathzone. Plague, famine, civil strife.

Ships still work it seems, since they went out and got eaten by seamonsters. How did they get the word out without communications? radio works but not cell phones? Why do ships work but not planes? Did the government make/commandeer sailing ships?

What kind of education do people who suddenly have to spend most of their time using muscle power to eat and sleep in relative safety get? when and how and why do they get it?

What kind of groups and power structures form? how are those who can use magic exploited? who does the exploiting? How do they manage it?

things to think on.

If you really want to do a 'fall of modern tech' you should go along the route that S.M. Stirling did by changing all the chemical rules that form the basis of our technology today.

An alternative route would be to introduce 'gods' who selectively nullify certain activities. I personally disrec this option as it can lead to all sorts of silliness later.

Hooray! Posters!

Planes don't work. why?
They do. It's the Radio's that don't.

Large Amount of Arcanum = Weirdness.

Internal Combustion
Yes, until you hit Arcanum which shuts down pretty much everything that isn't magic.

Hence Arcanum Airships.

People dying, yep, LOTS of that. US Gov't right now is East coast and some gulf coast.

New York to East Louisana is what they have. Indians are nomadic due to Great plains becoming a desolate wasteland Though can usually be located west of Appalachians to mid Kansas, Beyond that is Monster country. Mages got the mountains, nice and quiet for their stuff. California MIGHT be where TFF starts maybe if I decide to go through with that idea.

This is all ideas i need LOTS of help trying to iron everything out and find out what precisely i'm doing.

Golem pic
Well of course! that was one of my inspirations.

Also does this idea sound too much like Shadowrun?
:huh.:

Edit: This idea is a lump of clay, If i try to mold it, it becomes a hideous wreak, however if some people can help me i can maybe make it into something that make since. To a degree.

This idea sounds like Arcanum, actually.

Y'know, the PC game. Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura.

Also, since tech failed, there's at least one area in the US and Russia - and probably a few others as well - that's heavily irradiated. Nuclear power plants failing and all - the radiation from THOSE takes literally hundreds of years to drop to acceptable level, since fission material used in powerplants has a very long half life.

#20
Arcanum the Game huh? I'll look into that.

Nuclear Radiation
Well that's where my Orcs are coming from.

Also, new idea. Orks= Irradiated humans that evolved to compensate in the dangerous areas, also crazy and hostile. Orcs (minority) are Warcraft Orcs, and smart enough not to pick fights with everything.

Maybe.

The various campaign settings in the d20 Apocalypse book could also be useful here for inspiration, even though in this threads campaign setting modern techonology has been rendered inert.

Y HALO THAR SUPER MUTANTS
Well I have been playing Fallout 3 constantly since I got the GOTY Edition with all the expansions. And, from my lurking so have you.

d20 Apocalypse books
Thanks! Always looking for more input.

Okay, looking back at this I see alot major problems that I still need help with and I think i'm just going to start from the MagicÖ coming to everything.

1. Water you can't see the bottom of, VERY BAD. Dont't go in it or even near it, you will have a very high chance of being eaten or worse.

2. Radios are effective up to fifty miles.

3. Loud noise in the wildlands (west of St. Louis) very bad. You'll attract the attention of something big.

4. Should I do 'classes' or something else?

Also even east of the Mississippi you are not safe.

Need help with a major 'objective'.
