This is something that I've been working on for a while. I may or may not have a plan for this one.
Yes, I have been drinking. But it's not my fault I fine fortified wine so delicious!

Disclaim-me-do: Like all tawdry episodes of ultimate self-loathing, it began in Exeter.
@@@@@
Life had been challenging for Asuka Langley Sohryu; because of her genius level intellect, she frequently had difficulty dealing with less capable individuals. She had never known her father, having been conceived via artificial means. Her mother had gradually lost her grip on reality; eventually taking her own life.
That would have been a traumatic experience for anyone, but it had been Asuka herself that had discovered the body on what should have been the proudest day of her life – the one where she had been told that she was going to be a pilot for the Evangelion programme.
One could have expected Asuka Langley Sohryu to have struggled with the events in her life and lost. But that was not her way.
Asuka saw herself as the product of being forged in the fires of countless challenges. These challenges were the sort of filter that kept the incompetent, inept and, if she was feeling particularly harsh, the unattractive average people that she went to school with out of NERV.
Sure, she’d had advantages thanks to her parents’ positions, but she’d studied hard to get to university when she did. And they were what people called “real subjects†– maths, science, languages. Sure, she couldn’t read Japanese kanji very well, but her spoken Japanese was better than that of any of the other students in her university class.
Speaking of other students, Asuka thought about the class of shaved monkeys that she’d been stuck with. They had all been so very tedious; if they weren’t asking stupid questions about piloting, they were indulging in childish comments along the lines of their game “do, marry, killâ€.
After the second time she’d been roped into a game of that, she hadn’t bothered to remember their names. And that had been the case of most of the people she encountered at school, with there being few exceptions.
Though, most of those exceptions were in her class. Hikari Horaki was the class representative, which meant that she fussed over everyone. Touji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida were only remembered because they were Shinji’s friends. Rei kept to herself and that was fine with Asuka.
The only other student she knew anything about was Shinji. Shinji Ikari was different to everyone else she’d encountered. Yes, she’d been made aware of the stereotype of the polite Japanese man who didn’t want to make waves or cause offence, but Shinji was almost a caricature of this image.
Sure, he tried to keep his distance from people, like his father, but that and the name seemed to be the only things they had in common. Shinji certainly wasn’t like Ryoji Kaji, a man who Asuka had held as a prime example of manliness.
No, Shinji Ikari was polite; he tried to look away whenever Misato tried to embarrass him for her amusement. Part of her had been beginning to think that Shinji didn’t like girls, but an incident where she caught him looking at her out of the corner of his eye had convinced her that he was just shy.
Not only that, he didn’t seem to blather on about girls nearly as much as his idiot friends. No doubt Suzuhara and Aida thought that by being his friends, they’d get to be around Misato more.
It was possible that his exposure to Misato and her slovenly ways had cured him of this. It was his domestication that kept the apartment fed and cleaned, after all.
“So perhaps Shinji’s more than just a spineless idiot who’s a pilot because his father’s in charge of NERV?†Asuka asked herself. She let out a small laugh and returned her attention to the last of her homework that had been set. “This is easy. Reduction is loss, oxidation is gain.â€
Stretching, the redhead looked at the time and decided it wasn’t worth doing anything else that evening and went to bed.
@@@@@
As ever, Shinji was the first up and was going through the morning routine. The table was set and the coffee machine had been filled when the post was delivered. Since it sounded like there were more letters than usual, Shinji went to deal with them before putting the food on to cook.
“There’s something for Asuka?†he asked rhetorically. Shrugging, he placed the envelopes on the table where the recipients sat and went back to preparing breakfast.
Asuka was first out of her room and headed wordlessly into the bathroom. A short while later, she emerged and returned to her own room to dress for school.
Shinji had learned not to look up when he heard the door to the bathroom open. He had learned this the hard way when Asuka had assumed that he was hoping to get a look at her body and punched him in the face.
A few minutes later and Misato emerged from her room at the same time Asuka stepped out of hers.
“Morning, Misato,†Asuka said, surprisingly cheerfully.
“Mornin’, Asuka,†Misato mumbled in reply.
The pair sat down in their seats, waiting for their breakfast. The purple haired woman looked at her post and determined that most of them were bills.
Asuka, meanwhile, was about to hand over the envelope to Misato, having assumed that Shinji had been sloppy with the placement. “Wait, this is for me.â€
“Oh, have you got some secret admirer?†Misato teased, perking up at the thought of causing some mild mischief.
“I doubt it,†the redhead said, having scanned the letterhead. “It’s from a legal firm.â€
“Is everything alright, Asuka?†Shinji asked.
“I’ll find out in a minute, you just make sure that my toast isn’t burnt to a crisp, ok?†Asuka instructed before reading through the letter. “It seems that my stepfather died recently.â€
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, Asuka,†the young Ikari said, placing plates of scrambled eggs on toast on the table.
“I’m not that sorry,†Asuka shrugged. She looked at her roommates as she placed her letter on the table. “I mean, I’m not glad he’s dead or anything, but I never really got on with him.â€
“Oh,†Misato nodded. She opened her morning beer and took a long drink. “The only way to start the day.â€
Shinji managed to hold in his sigh, but it was clear that he didn’t agree with his guardian’s breakfast tastes. Asuka noticed the look on his face, but said nothing.
After the rest of the meal was eaten in silence, Asuka picked up her letter and read through the later paragraphs. “Apparently, I have been named in his will, but it’s being contested.â€
“Why would it be contested?â€
“It’s a long and complicated story,†Asuka said. “One that ends with me punching people who ask about it in the face. Are you sure you want me to tell it to you?â€
“N-no, it’s ok,†Shinji said, embarrassed by his impertinence.
“So what happens now?†Misato asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t need to do anything; this is just to let me know what’s happening. If I get something, then it’s great. But if I don’t then I’m quite happy to have nothing to do with him ever again,†the redhead said philosophically. “So really, I’m in the same position I was in yesterday.â€
“Oh, well, if you need me to do anything, then let me know, ok, Asuka?†Misato said, trying her best to be supportive and professional, despite the can of beer in her hand.
“Will do, Misato. Come on Shinji, it’s time for school.â€
“Coming, Asuka,†Shinji said as he finished clearing the table.

Asuka was bored with school soon after the first lesson had started, though she had endured the tedium. What was really bothering her though, was the self-study period she was sitting in, the planned lesson had been abandoned due to a teacher absence.
After a few minutes, she decided to use the school’s internet connection to do some research on her stepfather. After looking at the first obituary, she noticed that someone was standing next to her.
“What do you want?â€
“I… well, I mean…†the male student fumbled for words.
“Spit it out before I get angry,†Asuka warned as she checked the next result in her search.
“Are you doing anything this weekend?â€
“What’s it to you?â€
“I thought that it you weren’t doing anything that you might want to out to see a movie or something…â€
The pilot turned to see who it was that was asking her out on a date. “I’m busy this weekend. Go ask somebody else.â€
“That’s a bit cruel…†the would-be suitor protested.
“No, cruel would be telling you to piss off by beating you unconscious with your shoes and setting you on fire. I’m not interested in going to the movies with you. Now, run along before I lose what little patience I have left.â€
The boy fled, hoping to keep what little dignity he had left intact.
Asuka shook her head before continuing her research. ‘So, it seems that he was worth a few Euros when he died. Always nice to have some money, but I don’t think I’ll get much from the will.’
@@@@@
At lunch time, Hikari approached her friend. “Err, Asuka-chan, is everything alright?â€
“Why would you think that, Hikari?â€
“Well, it’s just the way you rejected Sato-kun earlier…â€
“First off, he’s not my type,†Asuka replied curtly. Her expression softened slightly as she continued her explanation. “Secondly, it’s hard to make plans for socialising when you can be called off at a moment’s notice.â€
“But it would have been kinder you’d accepted his offer and lied about not being able to meet him,†Hikari suggested. “You do have a built in excuse.â€
“And suddenly every time I fail to show up on time, people think that there’s an emergency and start panicking,†the redhead deadpanned. “Look, Hikari, I appreciate that you’re trying to look out for everyone in the class, but you’re not cut out for this match-maker business.â€
“But there has to be someone you like.â€
Asuka smiled patronisingly. There was Kaji, but Hikari would never approve, not to mention the flak they’d both get from Misato. The other boys in her school were all idiots, especially the dull-witted ones in her class.
That left one age appropriate male who didn’t completely turn her stomach.
The pilot looked around. “There might be one person I like, but I’m too busy to discuss romance right now.â€
“Is something the matter, Asuka-chan?â€
“Maybe, I don’t know, it’s complicated. I’ll let you know more in a couple of days.â€

Kentaro Sato was not happy about the humiliation he’d suffered at the hands of Asuka Langley Sohryu. Ordinarily, he’d have no problems getting a girl to go out with him.
He was handsome, intelligent and rich. Any two of those three would have made him desirable to the girls in his school, but he had all three in his arsenal, which meant that he could cast his net further afield.
If the girls in the area hadn’t been impressed by his looks or his casual displays of wealth, often in the form of gifts and expensive meals, then when they saw that he had a keen mind and could hold a decent conversation, they often agreed to further dates.
But now Kentaro was getting bored with these girls and wanted a challenge. Sure, some of his peers were up to more sordid things than he was, but that hadn’t pressured him into “disgracing†or “dishonouring†the girls he’d picked up so far.
Of course, Kentaro wasn’t expected to remain distant and socially awkward around the fairer sex, but as a member of a proper Japanese family, it wouldn’t do to be embroiled in a sex scandal.
Even before the Second Impact, there had been several falls from grace from old families in the Tokyo area concerning overly amorous young men from old samurai families.
However, all the girls he’d dated so far had been Japanese. Foreign girls were, as his father and grandfather had told him, different. According to the elders of the Sato family, foreign girls couldn’t be expected to be held to the same standard as Japanese girls. Which is why, in his eyes, Asuka Langley Sohryu was fair game for fooling around with.
Or rather, she would have been, had she not point blankly refused to go to the movies with him.
“Stupid, uppity foreign bitch!†Kentaro raged in the apparently empty bathroom. “Who does she think she is, turning me down like that? Doesn’t she know who I am?â€
After a few more choice curses, the young man had calmed down enough to prevent himself from punching the walls.
“She’s just a silly bitch who’s going to miss out on a great time with a great guy,†he said, striking a pose in the mirror. “Any girl who can’t see my good points obviously isn’t worth the time of day.â€
Kentaro pulled out a comb, wet it under the tap and ran it through his hair. He continued to tidy his appearance by straightening his collar and checking his smile. His teeth were immaculate.
“Saying that, she is pretty cute and it would be nice to get some photos of her firsthand, rather than taking whatever that dork Aida can come up with. Heh, I wonder if she had red hair down there…â€
Flexing his hands, the privileged young man considered just how he could go about getting his hands on Asuka and photos to keep as a memento of the encounter.
“Blackmail seems so very clichéd, however it is so very effective. But what do I use?â€
The bell chimed, signalling the end of lunch, cutting off any further plotting for the time being. Kentaro left for his afternoon classes with a spring in his step.
A minute later, the door to one of the stalls opened and Shinji peered out, hoping that he hadn’t been spotted. The coast was clear, so he flushed the toilet and washed his hands.
This was an emergency, but cleanliness was still important. The delay would also serve to allow the pilot a chance to decide what to do next.
Would Asuka believe him if he told her what he’d heard? Would anyone believe him? Sato was a popular student, and not just with the girls in school.
He couldn’t just let someone treat Asuka like that. Sure, sometimes she treated him like he was something she’d stepped in, but Asuka was important. Everyone at NERV would be angry if he let something bad happen to his fellow pilots.
Knowing his options were limited, Shinji decided that it would be best to keep close to Asuka. It would annoy her, but it would stop Sato from doing anything too bad.
Sustaining a few punches and harsh words was nothing compared to what Sato was thinking of doing.
