MUDs...

For those who don't know, a MUD stands for Multi-User Domain, or, occasionally, Multi-User Dungeon. While it technically describes any multiplayer game, it is usually used to refer to text-based MMORPGs, where the user types in commands.

Personally, I play the Discworld MUD and the RetroMUD every now and then, though I'm not as into them as I used to be. Oh, yes, and I've played a little Merentha as well...not as much as the others, though.

So, anyone else around here play a MUD? And if so, which one(s)?

I played one Wheel of Time one a couple years back, and completely failed to achieve anything in it. Maybe that was just me sucking, and maybe it was because the game sucked, but I gave up after a week and never looked back.

I've tried several on occasion, but I usually get too sidetracked typing inane commands to actually get anywhere.

I played Ancient Anguish for a while and later Achaea. The later is very roleplaying, lots of crafting skills. Tricky to get money there. I like the Maldaathi, the evil knights.

I played a couple.

Back in the day(about 8-9 years ago) I played a MUD I can't remember the name of.

Then I got into a MUSH, HellMUSH(based on Milton's Paradise Lost, but with changes and stuff), and roleplayed the crap out of that until it closed, even though it never was very big.

Then I got introduced to the Aardwolf MUD, and played a bit there. Then, I dunno, my desire to play text-based game dried up when I got into EQ, and I haven't been back.

Although, if HellMUSH ever comes back, I'd be all over that.

The trick is aliases. Lots and lots of aliases. :sisi:

That, and triggers to automatically perform a command when the MUD sends you a certain string.

Of course, have your aliases and triggers do too much, and you'll get banned for botting. ^_^

MUSH, MOO's, MUD's and MUCK's?

I miss some of them, lost addy's and some do not let me connect, so I wonder if they died. :blue:

I do remember them though, first computer experiences.

Helped my typing skills somewhat. :p

Heh, you shoulda seen me the first time I got onto HellMUSH.

To make an analogy, I was about as appropriate to RP as leetspeak is to fanfic writing.

Heh, indeed...MUDs taught me to type quickly and accurately...or, well, I was going to die. :sweat2:

When I discovered 'em, I couldn't help but think...damn, these'd be good for keyboarding classes. :snigger:

Then after that, I got involved in freeform RPing, then in fanfic writing...but I still enjoy going back to play a little, every now and then. Especially the Discworld MUD...I alaways liked the little quirks in the system. Like having to carry around various components for big spells as a wizard (always keep a knife on you...some good spells need eyeballs), while witches were better at potion-making and high-level enchanting...being a priest was annoying, since you had to watch your alignment...all in all, fun stuff. Wizards are the best...we get the fun toy spells. Like summoning cabbages to follow people around.

RetroMUD, I never got into as much...it had more options, but it always felt like it had less...character, I guess. Though being a necromancer is fun...

I used to play a mud that was a mishmash of various anime Unis and had one of the most creative and customizable XP systems I had ever seen. But then, one of the admins got into a fight with the founder and decide to rape the xp system to the point of no return. After that, I sort of gave up on the format.
