My Little Pony: FIM

Last week's episode about the Apple family brings the number of 'Not-Pinkie' background ponies in this season up to two. There's the rave pony in The Saddle Row Review and then this new pony receptionist who both look a lot like Pinkie Pie but aren't actually Pinkie.

Season 6 is now over. Trixie is the horsiest horse that ever horsed.

Now to wait for Season 7.

I suppose I should go watch Legend of the Everfree too...

Holy fuck.

I'm finally able to start catching back up with MLP (RL took issue with me having free time around Episode 6 of this season) and I'm on episode 7.... and I think I'm going to have to give canon!Rainbow Dash a new nickname: Cringebow Dash. Because holy FUCK is this episode cringe worthy and I'm only halfway through as I type this. I'm having the same reaction that I do for most CMC episodes where I know 95% of what's going to happen and I have to keep stopping to do something else to let it wear off, kinda like discharging static electricity.

My only consolation is that I know another Discord episode is coming up this season because right now, holy shit... just... *cringe*

I want to stop, but I know I'll have to watch back up to this point on this site if I do because I won't be satisfied just reading a synopsis later.

I was supposed to be in bed an hour ago, but I wanna finish this episode, and yet the cringe.... the cringe.... TT~TT

@akun50

Thankfully, the next two episodes are pretty good, then you hit a few meh ones, then all the episodes for the rest of the season are at least decent except for episode 22, and episode 16 which has been polarising. Episode 23 might be cringeworthy again but I didn't really think so.

So, I watched the MLP Movie. Not the Equestria Girls ones, but rather the 2017 MLP movie that is NOT Equestria Girls. I will try not to spoil anything, but I feel I need to share my thoughts.

I will admit that some of the decisions that the cast made were clearly setting up for the end of the movie, and some were evidently because despite the strong Brony presence still in the fandom, the target audience remains little girls, and they clearly wanted this to be reflected in various ways. (i.e. no explicit fighting until it's so late that the parents can't demand money back from the theaters.)

But holy shit was I in cringe-filled agony in the first half+ of the movie. Seriously, it was only after the (secondary) villain's song (which, while nicely composed, depicted a rather lame reason for turning evil, though still a slightly better one than Starlight's reason), that I felt the movie start working properly.

Until, then I had some many reasons to get frustrated. I will put them below.

Reason #1 - Really? You guys got a singer to redo "We Got The Beat" as the opening song? Arguably one of the lamer songs out of the 80s? No offense to anyone who likes that song, but I always felt it was like a half-finished song. Like it was supposed to spin up into a bigger and better one than it ended up being.
Reason #2 - Where is the Royal Guard?
Reason #3 - WHERE is the Royal Guard?
Reason #4 - Seriously, did Shining Armor take the entire Royal Guard with him when he went off to Snowy Bumfuck Egypt the Crystal Empire?
Reason #5 - WHERE IS THE ROYAL GUARD?
Reason #6 - WHERE IN THE FUCK IS THE FUCKING ROYAL GUARD?!
Reason #7 - The villain's method of attack is painfully stupid and easily disrupted on at least a hundred different levels.
Reason #8 - FUCKING WHERE THE FUCK IS THE FUCKING ROYAL GUARD, FOR THE FUCK'S SAKE?!
Reason #9 - WHERE IS THE FUCKING ARMY?! THE WONDERBOLTS?! DISCORD?! ANY ONE WHO CAN THROW FUCKING PIE!?

So, yeah, as you can probably tell, something got on my nerves. Namely, the utter absence of the primary defenders of the Princesses of the Sun and Moon. I mean, I know they're about as effective as the ADPolice in Bubblegum Crisis, but still, let them have a showing, yeah?

Also, the secondary villain puts the fucking Penultimate villain to shame in terms of EVERYTHING. Seriously, I felt the penultimate villain of the movie was a letdown.

Like letting out a fart that you think is just gas, and then feeling liquid come out of your butthole. He feels like both the fart and the liquid.

I know he had to be kept mysterious until his "official" appearance, but I just don't understand how he curried enough respect to manage the forces he had, and he never felt imposing, wise or cruel enough to warrant the terror factor he seemed to incur.

Otherwise, when all is said and done, I'd say....

The start is cursed and bad and they should feel bad. But the rest does some good songs and there was somewhat decent world building that I enjoyed.

Basically, the secondary villain ended up more interesting than the rest of the movie, and I think I feel about her the same way I did about Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer. She's obnoxiously OP to start, then becomes a better character as time goes on.

Kinda head-scratchingly weird how that keeps happening with this series.

I watched the movie last Friday too.

I think one of my issues with the series is that they tend to have way too many unicorn villains. Who is there really for Earth Pony and pegasus antagonists? The likes of Suri Polomare and Lightning Dust? Pfft. At least here, her motivation requires her to an extent to be a unicorn.

Rarity, Fluttershy and Applejack needed to do more things. They were just kind of...there for too much of the film.

The animation style for the new MLP movie to come out later this year.

It's passable for me and doesn't really trip my uncanny valley senses. Still looks weird and I hope they touch it up significantly before release (I mean, look at how much of an improvement the Sonic movie went from their initial design to the new design).

And since I missed mentioning it before, the G5 pony movie will be skipping a theatre release entirely and going onto Netflix. September 24th was the previous release date, but possibly subject to change.

Not surprising. Covid is still raging and studios probably decided a guaranteed payout from Netflix beats an uncertain tjeater one.

Yeah. It'll be a little sad not getting to see it in a theatre, but oh well.

Hopefully there'll be some toys that I can slut myself out and buy though

Rarity truly is the most fabulous of the Mane 6. Also the one who can deliver you a hoofkicking the most :O
