My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Idea Megathread

#1
Dispensing with any sort of deception, yes! I am a Brony and I love the hell out of this show and much of the fandom surrounding it. So let's get those gears turning for new story ideas! Because in the long wait we have until Season 4 arrives, we've got a gap to fill.

So let us begin.

- - - - -

First idea for the thread: Princess Luna decides to restart a tradition from back in the olden days: The Princesses sneaking into the bedrooms of suitable stallions at night and banging them senseless, occasionally having their foals. Celestia nowadays doesn't really do that anymore (Officially), but this leads into Celestia having to teach her little sister how to actually date.

"Now Luna, I've invited a stallion here to be my assistant-Oh! There he is now, very good Big Macintosh! Now we can-LUNA!"

"What? You said we were practicing!"

"Not THAT! You already know how to do that!"

"Um... Ah wouldn't mind practicin' that a bit mahself-"

"See? He is completely willing! Let us resume!"

"Luna!"

"*sigh* What now?"

- - - - -

It is slightly inspired by my Progress stories, hence why I'm not writing it myself. I'm trying not to lap myself, you see.

*thumbs up* Best of ways to start a topic! Let me add my two cents of an idea! Let's see... ... I have this Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey cross-over that just won't leave me alone!

Following Spike's rampage in "The Secret of My Excess", Twilight is forced to make some money quick to pay for all the damage Spike has caused. She doesn't want to ask Princess Celestia for more money, she wants to handle this herself. So what are some possible routes she might take to make some cash?

Using her magic she could fix a lot of the damage. However, she still has a fair amount of debt to cover. Not astronomical but enough she's going to have to take care of it. So, here are a few ideas:

-Working at her friends' places of business which leads to some hijinks.
-Trying to start her own business (which fails miserably).
-If you want to go a naughty route, have her try her hoof at gentlecolt clubs and the like.

Or she can win a contest, publish a book or many other possibilities. What have you got?

There have been some "Big Macintosh is pursued by all the mares" fics, and some like "The Herd" by Lighthawk are good. But many have had the excuse of heat to drive mares after Big Mac.

I say, why not a story where it's just because Big Mac is Big Mac the Mane 6 pursue him? A real romantic comedy.

And of course, there's the wild card, Pinkie.

I think I've seen that third one on AFF somewhere

How about spike instead, he was literally destined for it clearly:

Oh. Well this version wouldn't have to be explicit. Maybe just a pony burlesque show, if you will. Rarity would be thrilled.

My own idea following "Secrets of My Excess"

After his giant phase, Spike is worried about losing control again, so, in secret, he goes to get help from the only one who had any idea of what the heck was going on during his greedy phase, Zecora.

Come the Wedding, Spike has some new tricks up his sleeve when the changelings attack (Maybe better fire control, or emotional control to adjust his own size).

Personally, I think Zecora has some potential in a jedi-master like way, maybe reforming former baddies like Gilda or Trixie, maybe add that in, Gilda learning some wind/weather attacks and Trixie finishing the training that even Twilight didn't.

Zecora is pretty damn underused. Who her backstory could be really interesting.

More importantly though, we need more of Trixie. She's the best, by far, who knows what she's seen when traveling?

For some reason, I also could picture her popping up in the middle of the Changling invasion with a pole and Going all Rafiki on their asses.

Here's a thought that I've pondered on. The Apple family seem to outright own their farm. They also seem to have a virtual monopoly on Apple production in their part of equestria. Other than the Flimflam brothers, they even seem to have a lock on local cider production. Then why is Applejack always worried that they have to keep working so hard or they're going to lose everything?

My theory is that AJ has a terrible head for numbers. Either she's innumerate or just doesn't have the patience to actually to the math involved so she keeps seeing all the zeroes on the books that Granny Smith and Big Mac are keeping and she assumes that it must be bad. Cause zeroes means they ain't got anything, right? Those other numbers to the left of all them zeroes are awful small numbers too. So that's gotta be bad too, right?

I kinda think it might be part having to pay a lot of taxes, and part having to keep up with orders. If they don't keep up with orders, they could lose customers to alternatives.

Or they might not own the farm outright, maybe they had to mortgage something, because some of those buildings probably need repairs or replacements if they're as old as Granny SMith

Good point. Not to mention the Barn seems to be in dire need of rebuilding on a semi-regular basis.

But I still like the idea of AJ being paranoid and not particularly good at the business side of running the farm and leaves that sort of thing to the rest of the family.

Holy shit I hit Report by accident.

Anyway, this does fit Applejack's comment on Big Mac's "fancy mathematics". It's likely that your theory is correct; Applejack doesn't really seem to be business oriented, so while she loves the farm and is a hard worker, she knows absolutely zilch about economics and book-keeping.

Of course, this is the pony who decided to open up a food stall in a party with free food, and thought a garden party involved digging dirt, so being book dumb and an economic dimwit isn't a very difficult leap to make.

What I'm more curious about is how Rarity makes money in a town where clothing is seldom worn.

Pinkie Pie gets pregnant after a huge party goes down at Canterlot. Alas, she has no idea who the father is.

So naturally her friends decide to find the bum who knocked her up and beat the hay out of him if he doesn't make an honest mare out of her.

I'd have to say it boils down to the fact that clothes are essentially a luxury item. Meaning they are specifically just for special occasions, which I further take to mean that they would be expensive. She also doesn't seem to be selling anything "off the rack" so it looks likes the work is done on commission. Meaning she can up the prices even further.

The other possibility is that the boutique is actually being run at a loss and is just a vanity project for her. This assumes that Rarity's family is rich enough to do this. Given that assumption, this also makes for a high probability that her family is nouveau riche, which may explain why she's so desperate to break into Canterlot high society. They have the money, but not the generations worth of connections to hob-nob with the REAL upper crust.

Perhaps she simply hasn't quite figured out how to parlay her connections to her real friends and heroic status into something more tangible on a social level. Alternately, she doesn't want to use her friends like that and wants to get to high society on her own merits.

Or I may be overthinking this again.

Her plan for the Gala, although poorly executed and a bad venue, is actually a somewhat solid plan, although giving such large portions may have been much, giving samples to big decision makers and those who probably own businesses that serve food or know those who do could help build connections for a better sale and business (And I'm not sure she was giving it away, didn't Soarin' pay for his pie?).

For Rarity's job, I'd have to agree it's because her clothes are luxury items, indicated by the fact that they have freakin' gems in them. Celebrities, like Sapphire Shores, tend to fork over a lot of money for their costumes, especially the ones they wear on tour, fans with disposable income tend to want at least something similar, and celebrities tend to get trends started, all of which brings her a fair amount of income. And she may also just sell some gems, too, you never know.

All that said, I think this more belongs in the discussion thread than here, not that I'm complaining.
