Mercury used her computer in the manga to protect a building from Zoicite's killer broadcast (IIRC) used her computer to shove a building in another dimension on the fly.

In Sailor Moon the only thing she can do for the longest time other than the mist thing is Enemy Scan. If every mage and their device can do that, then she is pretty much worthless the instant the TSAB comes along.
Yes, Mercury will be completely useless the moment the TSAB shows up. I mean it's not like Yuuno could possibly teach her to use binds and barriers and things because she's the super-genius math wizard, or that maybe she could pick up a device at some point because all or most of the Senshi will be getting them sooner or later. No, she's just going to fade into the background and never offer her tactical expertise to anyone ever again.

Are you actually listening to anything I say or are you just selectively reinterpreting my posts into the most negative context possible? :(

I'm not saying that you have to. Just that the Mercury Computer's capabilities are much better than those of Devices and/or the Asura. I mean, we've never really seen the Devices actually analyze anything.
Ordinarily I would bring up the Asura's ability to scan across dimensions as well as Area Search for RH's end of the debate. However that's quite immaterial; the tech advantage is a balancing point that helps keep the TSAB relevant in a conflict where the power levels are way over their heads. I'm not going to redo White Devil going the other direction and have the Senshi do everything while the TSAB contributes nothing, and if that means I have to selectively nerf the MC a bit to make the Senshi more dependent on TSAB tech then that's acceptable.

I don't remember that part but that makes the MC sound more like an ancient device of some sort if she's actually casting spells with it.

It was the same chapter Usagi healed a city. The chapter where Luna complained Usagi didn't have city ranging attacks like the others. Mercury only had a few seconds to my memory before shr shoved the arcade into another dimension so the people inside couldn't be effected by Zoicite's murderous broadcast like the rest of Tokyo.

My point is it sounds like Mercury will be turned into just another support fighter, and with your idea sounds like she's just going to be the Senshi's version of Yuuno. The Mercury Computer/Enemy Scan is one of the few things that make her unique.

The way you're phrasing your arguments makes it very easy to do that.

Alright, let's take this back to the top:

Mercury is a support mage. Between the Mercury Computer and her complete lack of offensive power (speaking in terms of the first season), support is Mercury's designated role in the Inner Senshi. She isn't a tank like Jupiter and Mars, she doesn't have the versatility of Venus's spell set, and she doesn't have Moon's unstoppable firepower: her job isn't to blow the enemy away, her job is to find the chink in the enemy's armor, make one if the chink doesn't exist, and tear it open for the others to capitalize on.

Ami can do that with the Mercury Computer. But she can also do that with a device that's specced for support magic like Klarer Wind, and if Yuuno is teaching her Mid-style magic then she'll be even better at her job than she's ever been before. The Mercury Computer being worse than an intelligent device at what it's supposed to do doesn't mean Mercury becomes useless and goes to sit on the sidelines for the rest of the fic, it just means she upgrades to something better and becomes even more dangerous than she was before.

That all being said, I'm starting to get a niggling itch in the back of my head like I'm doing something wrong and I don't quite see what. Something about giving the Senshi devices, like just handing them a power-up is too easy. :hmm:

You mean like how easy they gain new powers every season. It's not the same as how Nanoha gains new spells. That's because it's easier. They don't have to work or study. A device would still require effort. Without effort, and being limited by their instinctive magic, a device would be useless unless it came with a cartridge system.

Came across this post, which I thought would be of interest, as it is something of a different take on the differences between the series than I recall seeing in this thread.

It's also an incorrect take. We know that Nanoha would be a mage without a device. She wouldn't be as powerful or as fast, but she'd still wipe the floor with most combat mages.

OK, first thing, congrats to the OP for at least wanting to try and tackle the problem with any Sailor Moon crossover: The insane power boosts they get at the end of the series when the author get feed up with being asked to write more.

That said the scenario he's presented seems to ignore the Moon Kingdom, it's present as a backstory but the changes to the universe haven't seemed to effect it. So here's what I think would have happened in the situation he posits. The creation of the universe that the for Cosmos didn't destroy the universe Al Hazard civilization called but it may have destabilized, it doesn't really matter. The Moon Kingdom is now a colony of Al Hazard created for breeding or otherwise creating REALLY high-end mages. It's destruction may have been caused by the collapse of Al Hazard.

OK, so at some point because of this Nanoha will become Sailor Moon at some point. Suzuka and Arisa will NOT be senshi, just some of high-end mages that inhabit Earth in this timeline. Chances are that Nanoha will end up with a harem bigger then Iono's. I don't see Nanoha ending up with Mamoru, he doesn't NEED her in the way that Fate does, and if he's in Tokyo while she's still in Uminari, or even if she's in a different part of the city she may well meet Fate before Mamoru.

I've written a snippet for this, guess what's happened.

The fight against Jadeite was not going well for Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars when a cry of “Restrict Lock” rang out across the airport and Jadeite's wrists and ankles where surrounded by pinkish light, preventing him from moving.

“My apologies for my late arrival my Senshi, but I was unaware of you recent awakening and was thus out of position as a result I was not in a position to provide immediate aid.” Said a serene voice from above them.

Craning their heads to look at the source of the voice they saw someone they had been hoping to see since they started their careers as Super Heroines: Sailor Moon, someone they believed was one of their own and their best lead on the Moon Princess yet. What they couldn't' believe was her outfit, she was actually wearing the multi-skirted and bewinged outfit she wore in public appearances in a fight.

She was in the company of three other girls wearing the most eclectic outfits either of the Senshi had ever seen outside of Sailor Moon's. All four where slowly descending towards to ground.

“Alisa, Suzuka, secure the prisoner for transport.” Commanded Sailor Moon once the four of them where standing on the ground, causing on of the blondes and the purple haired girl to walk over the Jadeite and grab his arms.

“Am, where are you taking him?” Inquired Sailor Mercury.

“We're all going to Command One, a refurbished Silver Millennium bunker on the Moon. Once there the prisoner will be placed in a holding cell until some friends of ours can transport him to a more secure location. Once that bit of unpleasantness is completed we'll be having a discussion about co-operation and a training schedule.” Answered Sailor Moon.
