Naruto Naruto Canon Tweaks

Saw this in regards to HP and thought it sounded interesting:

What changes would you make to Naruto canon that wouldn't significantly alter the central events?

For instance, I would tweak the amount of time Sasuke spent in the hospital recovering from the Evil Sealing Method. Instead of two whole weeks lying in bed, he's only there for a few days and quickly leaves for his month-long training with Kakashi. That way we have a more believable timeframe, in my opinion, for Sasuke to reach Lee's unweighted speed and skill in the Strong Fist as well as learn the Chidori. And it's more fair to Sasuke who kinda got screwed when he lost half of his training time due to extenuating circumstances.

Then I would make it so that Sasuke leaves Konoha on the same night that the Sound Four make their offer instead of several days later as indicated by the moon. This way he's clearly acting on impulse due to the humiliation he suffered by Itachi, Naruto and the Sound Four. It also means that Lee isn't waiting around after making his decision for surgery, Sakura intuitively realising when Sasuke was planning to leave is more believable and the Sound Four aren't hiding outside of Konoha for days in wait, especially when Orochimaru has a time limit.

Finally Naruto would leave Konoha for his training trip a week or two after the failed retrieval mission instead of three months. That's three months wasted out of the three years they have to rescue Sasuke that we aren't given a reason for, and were apparently forgotten about in in Part 2 anyway.

So what actually happens hasn't changed, it's just been tweaked to make the ride a bit smoother. Now what would you do?

List of Tweaks

  • Naruto learns wind nature transformation during the timeskip, spending fewer clones and more time creating the Rasenshuriken.
  • Naruto spends months mastering senjutsu.
  • The Fourth Great Shinobi War is spread out over more than just two days.
  • Tobirama shows more feats with water ninjutsu and/or more focus on death-related jutsu instead of inventing the Shadow Clone Jutsu and Flying Thunder God Jutsu.
  • Sasuke vs Deidara doesn't end in the Great Snake Escape.
  • Kakashi doesn't call Lee a genius for opening Five Gates.
  • Lee is not a natural-born user of the Drunken Fist.
  • Lee's role in the Sasuke Retrieval Mission is replaced entirely by Gaara.
  • No prophecies or transmigrants.
  • Sasuke, Madara and Izuna all have Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi with their Mangekyou. Sasuke doesn't have Kagutsuchi.
  • Sasuke learns snake jutsu during the timeskip.
  • Sasuke is healed by Karin after the battle with Deidara, not the Power of the White Snake.
  • Hidan appears in the war.
  • Sasori has actual puppets in the war.
  • The Hidden Sound is instead the Hidden Grass.
  • Karin replaces Kin on Team Dosu.
  • Sasuke vs Gaara is the last fight of the first round.
  • Yuugao is one of the dissident before Gaara's speech.
  • Shikamaru defeats Temari with his kunai.
  • The Edo Tensei are revealed to only be at half strength when fighting Hiruzen.
  • Hashirama is introduced as the God of Shinobi and the strongest Hokage.
  • Tobirama mentions he invented the Edo Tensei.
  • There isn't a third coffin.
  • Orochimaru realises he still can't use hand-seals after swapping bodies.
  • Sasuke tries and fails to stab Naruto with the Chidori.
  • Haku's a girl? Or gay.
  • Naruto's shows better fighting ability against Kimimaro.
  • The Sound Five's past is shown in the battle against Kimimaro.
  • Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 Fight Scenes are canon.
  • Naruto learns the Shadow Clone Jutsu after Iruka arrives.
  • Genin are shown taking more missions, doing more training together and learning more jutsu.
  • Naruto experiences the memory trick in Part 1 which Kakashi/Jiraiya explain to him and he takes advantage of training for the tournament.
  • Zabuza sends three genin to kidnap Inari/Tsunami.
  • Team 7 learns water walking before the Chuunin Exams.
  • Naruto isn't separated from his team in the Forest of Death.
  • Naruto beats Kiba without passing wind.
  • Naruto can use the Rasengan one-handed after the timeskip and create shadow clones without a hand-seal.
  • Kakashi teaches Naruto how to break genjutsu in Part 1.
  • Naruto learned meditation during the timeskip which attributed to his mastery of senjutsu.
  • Naruto uses the shadow clone training method even after the Akatsuki Suppression Mission.
  • The Konoha 12 are teenagers in Part 1.
  • The concept of Jinchuuriki is implemented properly in Part 1.
  • Kisame reveals that he and Itachi were acting without orders.
  • Yamato was taken out by Kabuto during the Chuunin Exams.
  • The Treasured Tools can function independently with additional/different abilities.
  • The Yasaka Jewel is a spiritual tool instead of a jutsu.
  • Karin wields the Adamantime Sealing Chains and fuuinjutsu from the beginning.
  • Karui is in the same division as Chouji during the war.
  • Hiruzen is revived in his prime.
  • Naruto arrives in Konoha early and Tsunade sacrifices herself to protect him.

Wasn't that anime only, so that they could squeeze in some extra filler?

Okay then. The three month wait makes no sense, unless the Anime team forced the issue.

im thinking it might have taken that long for him to recover from super over-dosing on the Kyubi's power but I would probably be wrong.

So basically you'd just change all of the bizarre timeline issues. I can stand behind that.

I would personally like to tone down the ridiculousness of Mass Kage Bunshin training so it's not so overpowered and the reader isn't left wondering why he never uses it again for fast power ups. I'd accomplish this by having Naruto learn Wind Nature transformation during the timeskip with Jiraiya, so Kakashi only has to inspire him to invent Rasenshuriken. He spends the same total amount of total time training with Yamato, but he uses fewer clones and thus takes a more believably longer period of time to learn the jutsu.

I'd also give Naruto at least a month, possibly two or three, to master senjutsu. Seriously it's weird how many times Kishimoto throws in pointless, unnecessary time skips like all the ones Knight mentioned above, but then he goes and needlessly rushes all of Naruto's and Sasuke's training sessions. I get it, they are both geniuses, but even so learning incredibly advanced techniques like Lightning Nature transformation and Senjutsu in a week each is pretty fucking ludicrous.

In several fanfics, the authors used to limit the Mass Kage Bushin training by taking count of the strain that incorporated the memories of the kage bushin puts on the brain. Gaining the memories of hundred hours of training in less that a second is bad for the health.

That was in canon too, Naruto collapsed to the ground unconscious several times when he dispelled all his clones. But he recovered stupidly fast and suffered no long term damage from it so it didn't hinder his training that much.

Yeah, have Naruto suffer of MENTAL fatigue with Kyubi regeneration\Uzumaki energy being unable to compensate for that.

Make the 4th shinobi war last more than two days. Make it also resemble an actual war.

I would have kept the Nidaime Hokage as the Water Master, and not have him invent like half the jutsu in the series instead, and kept Minato as the once-a-genenation genius inventor of Hiraishin. Tobimara used, what, like 2 Suiton Jutsu after being revived during SWW4?

Hell, have Tobimara shove half a lake down Madara's Susanno and make it rupture from the inside. Or show off a Suiton Jutsu that can actually extinguish Amaterasu. There were plenty of ways to make him look awesome without either making him look like a rehash of Kisame, or making Minato retroactively less awesome.

Also, I would have had him able to manipulate Suigetsu like a puppet. Just because.

Tobirama being the water master he was hyped up to be would have been good, but I also would have been happy if Kishimoto had picked just one of the many other iconic jutsu he invented and actually built further on that idea.

For example, if he'd invented Edo Tensei: have him actually summon some zombies himself after being summoned, or call ghosts from the afterlife to fight for him, or summon a shinigami to fight for him like a normal summon instead of eating people's souls. Make him into a dual classed Waterbender/Necromancer. Have him summon damned water from the River Styx that drains the life force from anyone submerged in it and angry drowned spirits try to grab his opponents and pull them under. That would have been pretty unique.

Change the Deidara/Sauce fight around so it doesn't end in the STUPID Great Snake Escape

If you still want to kill Manda, I think an easier way to get around it would be for the Sauce to summon Manda, hypnotise him, and have Manda swallow the C4 and get blown to snake bits in the explosion.

The Great Snake Escape just needed better presentation.

Sasuke doesn't shut off his Sharingan which is what led to Deidara saying he had run out of chakra and he doesn't stand around like a moron until the absolute last second as the bomb prepares to blow. Instead he's shown saving himself; drawing on the curse seal, swiping blood from his face and dragging it along his snake tattoo before it blows. Then he or Suigetsu mention how he'd hypnotized Manda beforehand as his escape plan against any Akatsuki members.

Hey Night, you, Nova, and Anko seem to know canon the best.

Any ideas on how to tweak Lee considering his symbolism for human weakness?

How do you mean? Sounds like you're implying something specific.

...And you forgot the 'k'. :blue:

Just show Lee getting a crush easily. Which is already canon.

Well, I've a couple tweaks in mind for Lee.

Kakashi doesn't call him a genius and is instead just amazed that he'd gone through enough rigorous training to open five of the Gates. Lee also wouldn't be a natural born user of the Drunken Fist, as entertaining as that was. In both cases, this avoids any of his abilities being attributed to a natural talent instead of hard work.

I wouldn't have him be involved in the Sasuke Retrieval Mission would just leave him in bed recoverng, having just undergone surgery. Instead it would be Gaara who saves Naruto's ass from Kimimaro. Naruto would see for himself that Gaara had changed for the better (which we never actually saw in canon) and Gaara could make up for his previous actions by directly saving Naruto's life.

Edit: I wonder if Lee's extreme susceptibility to alcohol is meant to be an example of him representing human weaknesses. That and him being "prone to love at first sight" i.e. a weakness for women.

Wow, I only just realised that Lee is weak to two of the three Shinobi vices, Women and Alcohol. I wonder if he's easily swayed by money...

Jiraiya probably had to make preparations for what he was going to do, which includes locating and getting a place to stay and practice, gather intel and supplies, devise a schedule for his master plan, and other bits... just as soon as he finishes up his "research."

Or, to keep the tension, a scene of Sasuke commenting that he'll need to summon Manda "just in case" (don't show the actual summoning and stuff), and then after the Deidara fight, Suigetsu comments on Sasuke prepping Manda with the Sharingan to protect Sasuke at all cost.

Lee gaining a mastery of the Drunken Fist could be both a hilarious arc/flashback arc and a drama filled one. The fact that he's an orphan getting drunk could lead to uncomfortable things and the fact that he seems to be an angry/fighting drunk says alot about what he either keeps inside et al.

Lee having a weakness for women...is that a call back to that databook entry/rumor about Gai being a player or something?

Yup, from the answers to a personality quiz or something in the fanbook. Lee's romantic tendencies are that he is "passionate, prone to love at first sight, and [his] affectionate statement are very direct. But [he] also loses interest quickly."

he's an orphan
If he is an orphan. :hmm:

There's no listing for a mother or father. And Gai may have adopted him but again no mention.

It's also a reference to Tenten's "Oh no, here he goes again!" when Lee did first show interest for Sakura.

For the Great Snake Escape, it only needs a comment from anybody about Manda having been pre-emptively hypnotized for such events.
The point about Sasuke being out of chakra, after all, was made by Deidara who might well have been wrong. Add Sasuke commenting on not expecting such a jutsu when he purposely turned off the Sharingan to lead Deidara in thinking he was out of chakra if one really have to.

He could have summoned Manda, genjutsued him, and then stored him in a scroll designed to unseal Manda around Sasuke.
