Really? I think that Kraken can get tedious at times, but if you can stand the Wall of Text, his fiction is generally not all that bad.

3 Reasons:

1. Chapter 9 of Foxhound.

2. Itachi Uchiha worship so asinine that it robs the work of quality.

3. Chapter 1 of Underdog Hollow, in which 13,000 words are spent without the main character and the story being established.

The bigger reason is this: Kraken's writing assumes that you care enough to read through walls upon walls of pointless and confusing text without actually giving you a reason to care.

His writing style encompasses an older form that I've come to despise. It's not exactly purple, but excessively descriptive with interludes of unneeded poetic nuances that amount to padding for anyone looking for solid plot and characters.

Days in.

The lines on his comrades' faces did little to help his faulty grasp of time. Anymore, even the children had wrinkles. Teens barely into adulthood and they had graying hair and frown lines on their foreheads and around their mouths.

A memory of a smooth, pale forehead beneath soft, gentle bangs started to appear in his mind, an instant before he ruthlessly crushed it back down.

Days out.

How long had he waited for this chance? How long since he'd learned of the plan? It had been so long since he'd last felt real hope that when he was first briefed by the elders, the resurrection of that long dead emotion felt like a branding iron had been embedded between his lungs.

When they'd explained their plans, the emotion hadn't died.

When they'd told him the maddening difficulty involved in the mission, it still hadn't faded.

When they'd told him that the odds of success were almost impossible even for him, he'd actually felt glad for the fresh challenge.

When they'd told him that the end result of the mission would beà

Days in.

How long had he been hiding here in this tree, watching and waiting? How many ANBU had literally come within arm's reach of him since he'd arrived? How many times had he not been spotted? How many times had he restrained himself from deliberately blowing his cover and teaching these careless fools a lesson?

A lesson of life's hard reality. A lesson in learning to love what one had right in front of them. A lesson in savoring peace, but refusing to grow weak from it. A lesson in vigilance, in actually trying to protect that which is most precious.

A lesson in losing everything that ever mattered until all that was left was a barren, ashy existence.

Days out.
Melodrama and angst aside, I can't help but read his work and then go back and question the necessity of it. He writes so much and somehow accomplishes next to nothing with it.

Foxhound took 230,000 words to get where most us could get to in 100,000 words or less.

Had I written Underdog Hollow with the same intent for the first chapter, I would edit it however many times I needed to make sure that it wasn't any longer than 3000 words.

Nothing against the guy personally, his writing just drives me up the wall.

1. Goddammit, not another freakin' necro...

2. Good prank. Asshole.

3. I didn't know there was a fifth part to this. Thanks for doing this.

Bill Felix: Where is that text-quote from? Obviously Kraken's, but what fic?
