OK, why (and how) is Naruto developing the Sharingan?

OK, why (and how) is Naruto developing the Sharingan?
Later on revealed during Jiraiya's training trip (alongside Sasuke, more on that later) when they visit the Uzushiogakure ruins. But to put it in layman's terms

In this fic, Naruto's genealogy goes like this

from Minato's Side, there is Shinato Namikaze (Minato's Father) and "A Fisherman's Daughter from Wave" (Minato's Mother). It is later revealed that Namikaze is a minor offshoot of the Senju clan, with their specialty being Wind-Element. They are also identified by their blond hair and cerulean eyes.

from Kushina's Side, there is Ashina Uzumaki (Named after his grandfather of the same name; Kushina's father, Mito Uzumaki's nephew and the Uzumaki Clan Head before its demise) and Tena Uzumaki (formerly Tena Uchiha, Kushina's mother and Uzumaki Clan Matriarch before its demise. And also, Mikoto Uchiha's cousin once removed.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

During the training trip, Naruto and Sasuke's bloodlines will be

Naruto: Mokuton and Sharingan
Sasuke: Sharingan

And their elements will be

Naruto: Earth (A+), Water (A+), Wind (S), Yang (S)
Sasuke: Fire (S), Lightning (S), Yin (S)

Their Specialties will be

Naruto: Shadow Clones (Along with Kunai and Shuriken variants), Shunshin, Rasengan (and variants), Transformation, High-Level Wind Style Ninjutsu, High-Level Wood Style Ninjutsu, and the Uzumaki Clan's Secret Techniques. Beginning to undertake Fuuinjutsu and Senjutsu.

Sasuke: High-Level Fire Style Ninjutsu, High-Level Lightning Style Ninjutsu, High-Level Genjutsu, Mid-Level Kenjutsu, Shadow Clones (Kunai and Shuriken), Shunshin, Sharingan Techniques.

And yes, in this fic at least, Sasuke and Naruto ARE related (cousins to be exact, and brothers by reincarnation of course) which pretty much cements Sasuke as a Face, albeit an aloof, not so nice, one. And Naruto doesn't have so much a tree rather than a family kudzu.

So Naruto has Wood Release, the Sharingan, Shadow Clones, is super good at Wind Release and probably has those Adamantine Sealing Chains? Really?

Talk about a hard sell.

By High-Level, I meant Jonin-level.....and when you consider the threats in the fic, if anything I am UNDERpowering them. They might sound overpowered on paper but first, Naruto uses his Sharingan as support along with Shadow Clones to analyze opponents (and cannot use it offensively for long periods because otherwise his anger gets out of control and then boom, Kyuubi happens.). Second, Jiraiya decided to abuse the shit out of Shadow clones once he found out about the conspiracy written about in the Uzushio Ruins (the reason Black Zetsu manipulated events so that Uzushio got destroyed in this story was because "they knew too much")

There is also the whole Phantom Beasts issue (basically, something akin to the Heartless from Kingdom Hearts, what with the dark intent behind humanity's chakra use infecting the planet and the planet striking back.)

So Basically, the protagonists have to deal with Akatsuki, Kaguya (or rather, the corrupted Shinju), and the darkness that corrupted said Shinju in the first place (The Phantom Beasts are the foreshadowing of the last one).

You gave me an idea, however inadvertently.

Imagine something going wrong with a seal his parents put on Sasuke (for the purpose of this story) and its interaction with Naruto's Eight Trigrams which holds Kurama.

The two of them somehow permanently (and I do mean PERMANENTLY) fuse - as in, become one person. Their inner interactions would provide a lot of hilarity, as would Sakura's reactions, as well as the rest of Konoha.

If you want a super-bloodline Naruto and/or a Senju-Uchiha hybrid, this would also satisfy you, since the result of their merger would mean tomoe-Rinnegan Naruto eventually.

You also wouldn't need to do anything with his ancestors; he's already a direct descendant of Ashura anyway (the Uzumaki clan being an offshoot of the Senju), so no need to make adjustments to Minato's past, and Sasuke covers the Uchiha part.

This would probably be comedy, with action-adventure being secondary. They also have to struggle with finding a balance between them, the eventual realization they will never be separate again, Chakra Control issues worse than Naruto's initially, Sai's sudden presence in Team Seven (and Danzo's attention), and more.

Edit: Raiton - RasenUzumaki. A Tesla Coil-shaped Rasengan variant, the Lightning Element equivalent of RasenShuriken.

('Uzumaki' refers to a tridimensional spiral, IIRC.)

Believe it or not, I'm more focused on making Naruto and Sasuke related than anything and the hijinks that would ensue. The bloodlines are basically a result of his genetic tree in this fic (Fuuton and Sharingan) and his spirit (Mokuton)

If you want a super-bloodline Naruto and/or a Senju-Uchiha hybrid, this would also satisfy you, since the result of their merger would mean tomoe-Rinnegan Naruto eventually.
But unless they only fuse after becoming Indra and Ashura's transmigrants, then "Naruke" won't awaken the Rinnegan.

Obviously if that happened Indra and Ashura would both be so awed by the willing merger of their descendants bringing an end to the cycle of hatred that they would both transmigrate into Naruke simultaneously.

All those stories where Naruto supposedly dies (usually at the Valley of the End), then he returns x years later and we aren't given an explanation as to how he survived... do you remember those?

Do you also remember those fanfics where the Kyuubi would permanently die with Naruto because the seal was THAT strong? Well, why not combine those two concepts?

Instead of Kurama being dragged to the afterlife with Naruto and staying forever, he returns... with Naruto. Yes, the guy is resurrected alongside his Bijuu because of the seal's strength (they are literally inseparable). Too bad that he's in the Part 2 time or later... without the training and older body he had in canon.

You'd have to figure out exactly how the bijuu resurrection process works before you can use that idea.

My headcanon is that the bijuu's chakra disperses upon death and is absorbed into the earth. It slowly gathers into the dragon veins (chakra leylines/lifestream), flowing and clumping back together, until eventually over unspecified amount of time (but at least a few years) the beast reconstitutes and it bursts out of the ground, in rather a bad mood about the whole thing. The process is incredibly unpleasant for the bijuu, which is why they still fear "death" and are willing to provide their hosts with chakra when they are in mortal danger.

Naruto reviving with Kurama would be rather difficult with that theory. His soul might get stuck to Kurama, but it would be significantly harder for his physical body to tag along.

His own 'physical' body wouldn't, but he would probably just get a mass of chakra as a body. We've already seen that high concentrations of chakra are solid.

You could probably view it as the creation of a new bijuu, potentially.

Also, a similar idea was used in the Naruto/Doom crossover, if you want to see 'soul tie' and 'sent to hell' done in the most amazing way.

Naruto coming back from the dead as an honest-to-god chakra monster sounds potentially interesting.

Yeah, Naruto being made of Chakra is just about what I envisioned. Here's a snippet:

-----

Naruto couldn't remember what had happened; for some reason, he expected to be in pain, but other than some dizziness, he felt just fine. He said, "where... am I?" Not expecting an answer.

"Where do you think, you fool?!" A voice said, which Naruto recognized as 'the fox'.

He said, "Fox? Is that you?"

"Of course it's me, you idiotic brat! Have you not realized yet that you've gotten us both killed!"

Naruto shook his head around a bit, hoping that would clear the blasted fuzziness. He said, "wait, what about Sasuke? Did I bring him back?"

The Kyuubi said, "that accursed fucking son of a transsexual syphilitic cheap whore, who should have mated with Shukaku in the form of glass, is the reason we are dead in the first place! Uchiha Sasuke killed you, you moron! And somehow, curse that Yondaime, we've both ended up in the Shinigami's stomach!"

Naruto took a few moments to digest that; then, he said in a small voice, "now what?"

"Now, I blow off some steam," the Kyuubi said. Before Naruto could realize what it was talking about, said Bijuu had eaten him alive. The pain was excruciating; he could feel his bones crunching under its teeth and his internal organs being shredded, could smell the putrid breath from its stomach.

Someone was screaming. Before long, Naruto realized that it was he himself. He was suddenly whole again, but that didn't make him stop his screams.

-----

He could hear an impact, then silence. A few moments later, Naruto saw that the Kyuubi had its paw planted on what he somehow knew to be his previous position. Naruto was also encircled by someone's arms; he instinctively trusted this person, and didn't understand why.

"Yondaime! Blasted bastard - you won't even leave me alone in death, will you?!" The Kyuubi said, obviously furious.

"Wait, the Yondaime?" Naruto wondered to himself, only to be confused by the fact that the Kyuubi was no longer there. He said, "wait, where is the damn fox?"

The man stepped back from Naruto, then said, "don't worry about him for now. More importantly, what happened, Naruto? Why did you die so young? Was it a misranked mission?"

Naruto was suspicious of this man, Yondaime or not. He said, "why do you care?" Narrowing his eyes. He was also still shaken by the experience he went through at the hands of the Kyuubi, so he was shivering horribly.

The man looked hurt. He said, "don't you recognize me, Naruto- wait; Sandaime-sama didn't tell you?"

"What about the Old Man?" Naruto asked, thinking of his first familial relationship fondly.

...Not sure how I feel about Kurama cursing like a sailor. Doesn't really seem his style.

It would make sense for the chakra ghosts of Naruto's parents to show up, but I'm not sure how much power they'd have if Naruto was dead. I mean, if Naruto's body is destroyed then Kurama is free. The "prison cell" so to speak is gone. So Minato is not going to be resealing Kurama again.

I imagined that Kurama would be the one in charge once they'd revived and Naruto would just kind of be along for the ride because his soul ended up being bound so tightly to Kurama's. Like, he's unintentionally siphoning chakra away from Kurama to create his own pseudo-matter chakra body, he just reforms from Kurama's chakra if he's killed, and he can't travel too far away from him. When Akatsuki comes for Kurama they are forced to work together as a team for their own survival and they gradually learn to understand and respect each other. Konoha is forced to treat Kurama as a person for Naruto's sake and there are awkward scenes where he has to work with ninja who hate him because of the rampage 12 years earlier. Maybe his transformation causes Naruto to awaken the chakra chains jutsu, to make up for missing out on several years of training?

His cursing is meant to show how strongly he feels about being killed by an Uchiha; do you think I should change it to something else?

As for the Yondaime, this is the actual Minato; Naruto and Kurama have ended up in the Shinigami's belly. As for Kurama getting out and reforming and Naruto being dragged for the ride - well, that will happen later. The training lost, well, I've got a plan and it doesn't include the ASChains. You'll see below.

Snippet 2

-----

"So, you're my father, but you sealed the Kyuubi in me anyway," Naruto said, calm; too calm.

Minato nodded. He said, "yes; I wouldn't have been able to find another child with Uzumaki blood quickly enough to save Konoha, if there was even one. Besides, I thought you would have to face the Masked Man, and a trump card like one of the Bijuu would help."

Naruto said, "okay," then punched his father in the gut.

"Well, I kind of deserved that," Minato admitted, too unaffected by the pain for Naruto's liking.

"Kind of?" Naruto said, getting ready for a rant, "do you know what it's like, to grow up in a place that hates you? To have to pretend to be stupid just so people won't fear you? To feel like an outsider in your own hometown?!"

Minato looked at Naruto with a smile tinged with sadness. He said, "it seems you've been through a lot, Naruto. Please tell me about your life."

Naruto crossed his arms. He said, "what's the point anyway? We're both dead now."

Minato shook his head. He said, "not if the seal works as I think it might."

Naruto didn't have to pretend confusion; he was honestly confused. He said, "huh?"

Then, his father (and he had a father!) explained that there were two possibilities, the way Naruto's seal was set up. It was either that the Nine-tails would stay dead forever, or it would reform... alongside Naruto.

"Seriously?" Naruto said, blown away, "what about my body? And you? You did say you had half of the Kyuubi with you, right?"

"I don't know about your body. Maybe you'll be composed of Chakra, like the Kyuubi. As for me - there is no way for someone who sacrificed himself to the Reaper Death Seal to get away - at least, not for long*," Minato said.

"So even if I return to life, I'll still be an orphan, huh," Naruto said, a bit disappointed.

Minato smiled. He said, "think of this as an opportunity to bond with your father. Not to mention get training from one of the Hokage."

Naruto thought it over, and said, "right! But about training, will I even be able to grow stronger?"

Minato nodded. He said, "yes, even physically, I suspect. Don't you think it's strange, that I died at twenty-four, yet I look like I'm five years older?"

Naruto tried to think. He said, "so, you can grow older and stronger here?"

"Yes," Minato said, "but only as long as your original body still exists, or at least a large part of it."

-----

"Dad," Naruto said, hesitating when calling him that (not used to having a father yet), "what can you tell me about my mother?"

His father cursed Sarutobi quietly and launched into an explanation, telling much of Uzumaki Kushina's life story.

"Talking about me behind my back, Minato?" A feminine voice said.

"Kushina!" Minato shouted, only it was echoed by a growling voice that could only belong to the Kyuubi. "Crap," he said, taking both Naruto and Kushina elsewhere... somehow.

"So, mom is here too?" Naruto asked, looking at her in wonder, "wow, your hair is amazing! You're a total knockout," he said after taking in her form.

Kushina giggled a bit, then turned serious. She said that there wasn't much time left for her, so she asked for Naruto not to interrupt her.

-----
-----

Yes, I got a new idea as to how to handle Naruto's training.

Why Sarutobi and the other Hokage aren't there: the only reason why Minato and Naruto are in the same 'section' of the Shinigami's stomach is the fact that they are connected through the Kyuubi.

*Obviously, the mask Orochimaru used is a temporary measure here; or Minato just doesn't know about it.

The First’s Successor (Chapter 1)

I got this idea from a fic where the Second, Tobirama, taught Naruto. 'Nidaime no Sairin' or something?

This is a smart!Naruto, but he has a lot less Chakra than canon; you will see why.

-----

Naruto was a curious and clever child. Like most such children, he was quite reckless; so, he eventually got into something over his head.

To be exact, he climbed into the Training Ground 44, also known as the Forest of Death. A fellow classmate by the name of Hiroshi had tricked him into getting inside. Unfortunately, while smart, Naruto was a bit naïve and overconfident.

Of course, he was about to have a good wake-up call in the forest.

-----

Naruto POV

He’d show them! He was going to prove to the others that he was brave; then, they’d want to hang out with him! Getting high grades in tests didn’t endear him to anyone; he thought it might be because shinobi need physical prowess, too, and his aim and taijutsu were horrible.

(GROWL)

‘Crap, what was that?’ Naruto thought, startled.

More growls and snarls came out of nowhere, and two tigers showed up, one on each side, not even bothering with stealth - they were also much, much bigger than they were supposed to be, Naruto thought. He gulped, thinking, ‘what have I gotten myself into?’ And started running, the huge animals in hot pursuit.

Fortunately, Naruto was able to use his jumping prowess to keep them from trapping him between them to begin with, but they then followed him with ease, despite their size. After over an hour of chasing (and why were they so persistent?!), Naruto was starting to get really tired.

He had pushed himself to the limits of his speed - he had been moving close to a sprint for longer than he had seen anyone else manage. He decided that he would have to face the tigers, so he gradually slowed down, pretending at exhaustion. Then, when they were about to pounce, he took out a kunai (his only real one) and prepared to fight for his life.

As the accursed creatures attacked him, he dodged aside at the last second and stabbed the first of them under the chin. He knew by the way it was thrashing that he had succeeded.

Unfortunately, the second tiger was perfectly fine and was about to attack him again, and the kunai was stuck in the other one. Fortunately, he had been quick of mind enough to start running again. Unfortunately again, he soon tripped on the roots of the largest tree he had ever seen and started bleeding all over it. Then, darkness overtook him.

-----

“-id… ake up. Oi, kid!”

Naruto got up, still feeling a bit woozy, to the sensation of a stick poking him.

“Glad to see you’re up,” a man around his thirties or forties said.

“Eh? Who’re you? What happened with the tigers? And why in the name of the gods are you poking me like that!?” Naruto said. Then, he narrowed his eyes a bit and said, “you look familiar. Are you related to the Shodai Hokage?”

“My name is Hashirama, I don’t know anything about a tiger, and it’s a time-honored battlefield medic-nin tradition, in order,” the man said, grinning unrepentantly. Then, he said, “as for your last question, what do you think?”

Naruto thought he could trust this man, and his gut instinct usually didn’t fail him. He’d listen to it this time; ignoring it got him into this mess. He said, “is this question a test? You look just like the Shodai, and even have the same name. Am I dead, and you came to welcome me to the Pure World?”

Hashirama shook his head. He said, “are you familiar with the Shadow Clone jutsu?””

Naruto replied in the negative.

Hashirama said, “I left back an echo of myself, similarly to a solid Bunshinjutsu like my Wood Clone or a Shadow Clone; sealed it into this tree. I made a sealing array with my wife’s and brother’s reluctant help - they thought I should be looking for a cure for my disease, but I knew what was more important. Not to mention Hiruzen had the village handled when I poured the last of my Chakra into… me. So here I am.”

“Wow, so I get to meet the First Hokage in person. Were you supposed to be so… goofy, though?” Naruto said.

Hashirama immediately fell over and started drawing circles on the ground, a metaphorical storm cloud over his head. He repeated, “goofy. Goofy. Goofy? I still get no respect, I tell you!”

Naruto felt a drop of sweat go down the back of his head, which was joined by a second one when Hashirama suddenly got up, dark mood forgotten. The man said, “so, that said, what’s your name? Are you an Uzumaki? Or a Senju?”

Naruto said, “well, I’m Naruto; the Old Man gave me the name Uzumaki, but I don’t know if it has anything to do with a clan - he was always tight-lipped about my parents.”

“Well, what’s your Chakra’s color?” Hashirama asked.

“Yellow,” Naruto answered, “but what does that have to do with anything?”

Hashirama nodded to himself. He said, “yes, you’re most likely an Uzumaki. I hoped you’d be Tsuna-chan’s son or something, but your Chakra doesn’t feel THAT familiar. If only I were as precise a sensor as my little brother - he’d be able to tell exactly what traits you have inherited from each clan.”

“So, the Uzumaki clan was related to the Senju clan?” Naruto asked, fascinated with the topic. Suddenly, he noticed something and said, “wait, ‘Tsuna-chan’? Do you mean Tsunade-sama?”

“Yes, we often intermarried; my wife was an Uzumaki, same with my grandmother,” Hashirama said, “as for Tsunade, I’m glad to hear she’s well-known. Is she a taijutsu master? I remember she could arm wrestle adult chuunin and win.”

Naruto’s strange back-of-the-head sweating was back again. He said, “she is known as the greatest medic-nin in the world, the most powerful kunoichi in the world… and the current physically strongest human. How old was she when she beat those chuunin?”

“Ah, she was five; we won a fair few bets together. I’m glad Tsuna-chan followed in my footsteps, though,” the man said, pride in his voice.

Naruto rubbed the back of his head to get rid of the further increased sweat. He said, “you let your five-year old granddaughter gamble? What kind of role model were you?”

“You sound just like Mito- my wife,” Hashirama said, clarifying. He changed the subject, saying, “speaking of which, those marks on your cheeks look just like my daughter's. Did your mother happen to be- never mind.”

“What? What? I don’t know anything about my mother. Tell me please!” Naruto said, thirsty for some information on his parents.

Hashirama shook his head. He said, “that is between you and your guardian. This ‘Old Man’ must have his reasons for hiding things from you.”

Naruto said, “can’t you persuade him to change his mind? He was your student, right? Sarutobi Hiruzen, he’s Hokage now.”

Hashirama laughed. He said, “so, the kid is still Hokage? No Yondaime in sight, hmm?”

Naruto frowned and shook his head, speaking of the Yellow Flash and how he died killing a fox demon.

Hashirama narrowed his eyes, suddenly serious. He said, “when did that happen? And, do you happen to know when my wife died?”

“It happened nine and a half years ago,” Naruto replied, “as for your wife - well, I think she died when she was eighty-two…? If you want to compare, Old Man Sarutobi is sixty-six now.”

“I see,” Hashirama said, this time genuine pain in his eyes, nothing like the comical depression of earlier. Then, his expression turned thoughtful. He whispered, “so, she had a successor.”

Naruto’s sensitive ears caught that, but he didn’t know what to make of it, so he kept note of it for later. “I’m good at history dattebayo,” he boasted, “well, when the Hokage are involved,” he admitted.

“Tell me more,” Hashirama asked, “I want to know more about my successors,” with a strange smile on his face.

The two of them talked for hours, getting to know one another, as well as their respective knowledge of history. Naruto found out about the time of the Warring States and Hashirama’s role in that era ending, and Hashirama found out about the Senju clan’s end, but also about Naruto; his dreams and aspirations, his orphan status and more.

In fact, Naruto was certain that the man had understood a lot more than the boy said outright. Still, he ignored that and said, “do you know I have an Uchiha in my class, like your friend Madara? His name is Sasuke.” Then, he told Hashirama what he knew of how the Uchiha clan had also been reduced to one member.

“I see,” the man said, “is this Sasuke your friend?”

Naruto went on a rant -uh, exposition- on how Sasuke was a stuck up bastard. All the while, Hashirama was watching him in amusement, as Naruto realized. He said, “what’re you laughing at?!”

Hashirama shook his head. Then, he turned serious again. He said, “do you know why my original self left this imprint -me- here, Naruto?”

Naruto turned serious as well, and tensed a bit. He said, “no, not really,” and waited for the other shoe to drop.

“It’s because I thought that the Senju clan wouldn’t last long; we had too many enemies. So, I left an imprint of mine to teach the new generation of Senju or Uzumaki if there was nobody else left. Would you like to be my apprentice, Naruto?”

Naruto was astonished; it sounded too good to be true. He said, “I’m honored, Shodai-sama - but isn’t your decision too hasty?”

Hashirama shook his head. He said, “I’m a good judge of character, and considering the fact over forty years passed since my death and my clan -and probably yours too, now that I think of it- are all but extinct, I won’t get another chance to teach. From what you’ve told me, Tsunade has abandoned her duty, so it can’t be her either.

>>You’re not only literally my only choice, you also possess the Will of Fire in a way even Tobirama never did, and a surprising amount of talent and smarts. In fact, you remind me of myself. But don’t speak so formally, Naruto; if you’re to be my student, you should just call me sensei or shishou (master).”

Naruto bowed and said, “I’m in your hands, Hashirama-sensei,” a wide grin on his face, feeling as if he was dreaming and preparing to wake up at any time.

“The first thing is for me to find out what you can do; thus, a spar. I will trust you to cover your academics yourself, since I know nothing of recent history and advances in science except what you tell me,” Hashirama said, calm and serious, but not stern.

After thirty seconds of Naruto’s ass being kicked, the Shodai concluded that the boy had absolutely no skill in taijutsu and needed to start from scratch.

Naruto rubbed the back of his head. He said, “that’s harsh… but I can’t deny it. I can’t throw weapons for shit, either.”

Hashirama nodded, and asked Naruto to show him; after they got in the target range part of the seal, that is.

Thus, Hashirama showed Naruto how to change locations in the seal and how to leave it altogether, then they ended up in a place suspiciously similar-looking to the Academy’s training grounds. (Something Naruto voiced out loud; he was comfortable with the older man, in ways even the Sandaime couldn’t compare.)

Hashirama rubbed the back of his head, in a gesture similar to Naruto’s. He said, “yes, that’s exactly what it’s based on. I take it that the Academy hasn’t changed much in the last forty-some years?”

“Apparently,” the boy said. Then, he said, “wait, won’t I be late and worry the Old Man?”

Hashirama shook his head. He said, “time flows slightly differently here, about twice as fast as outside. That means that it may take a while for the tigers you mentioned before to leave; they’re persistent creatures. Ever since I created this forest, animals like those tigers appeared.”

“Wait,” Naruto said, “you created the forest of Konoha, Hashirama-sensei?”

“No,” the man said, “we built it in an existing set of forests; but this place, Training Ground Forty-Four, is something I’ve cultivated myself, using my Mokuton.”

“So, the Wood Release truly is that great - or was it because it’s you, sensei?” Naruto said.

“You’ll find out soon enough,” Hashirama said, smiling a bit. “But do you have any questions on the flow of time here?” He said after that.

“Oh, I forgot to ask about that. Does the different time mean I will age faster?” Naruto asked.

“No,” Hashirama said, “you age normally. Of course, that has two detrimental effects: firstly, that any physical training you do will be half as effective. The other is that the mental fatigue will hit you twice as hard once you enter normal time.”

Naruto thought it over a bit and said, “I think I get it - but what use is the different time flow, then?”

Hashirama smiled. He said, “you’re asking the right questions; I’m glad. The answer is simple: because both our clans are resilient, the mental fatigue isn’t as much of a problem as you might think. For physical training, though, we definitely should go back to normal time. Now, shall we?”

Naruto nodded, and Hashirama did a few hand seals, which made the world spin for a few seconds - literally, according to the man. “You’ll get used to the world shaking eventually, especially if you learn space-time jutsu yourself,” he said.

Naruto was still feeling a bit dizzy, but he shakily nodded; he also felt a need to go to bed, similarly to when he had studied a bit too late into the night, but decided to power through it. It probably was just the mental fatigue anyway.

Hashirama told Naruto that he was more well-suited for a taijutsu style based on kicks. He said, “your flexibility and lower body strength seems to be very high. Maybe I’ll teach you the Black Leg style; Sanji, my son-in-law, was the one who perfected it, though his sensei, Zeff, started it.*”

Then, Hashirama said that they had forgotten the weapons throwing, they had gotten off topic. After Naruto threw a few shuriken and kunai, Hashirama corrected his grip, which, after an hour or two, allowed him to hit the targets consistently, though he couldn’t hit near the center without lots of luck.

Afterwards, Hashirama showed Naruto a few exercises to increase his flexibility and strength; those would also help him learn and master the Black Leg style later. Finally, they got into what Hashirama called the most crucial part for Naruto: Chakra Control.

The man ran through a few hand-seals again, changing the flow of time. He said, “Chakra Control is both physical -the way your energy flows through the Chakra network- and mental - your mind directs the amount used. But mainly, it is the latter.

>>Still, you can go through more physically demanding Chakra Control exercises
-which, strangely enough, include meditation- outside and do the others in the time field.”

“How did you know that my Chakra Control sucked, sensei?” Naruto asked.

“Well, I had a hunch,” Hashirama said cryptically. Then, he had Naruto use the Leaf Concentration Exercise, ignoring the boy’s protests that he already knew this. “Okay then - if you know this, then let’s make things harder: you will stick one leaf on your forehead and one on each palm, channel all the Chakra you can on each of those locations, but only touch each leaf with just enough Chakra to stick it and don’t waste the Chakra you haven’t released.”

Naruto cursed his big mouth, but did as his new sensei asked. After two-and-a-half hours or so, he made a bit of progress: he managed to stick the leaf on his right palm for a few seconds before the one on his forehead fell off. Hashirama congratulated him, but told him he had yet to finish the first of many Control exercises to come.

An hour later, the boy felt about to collapse. He thought, ‘is this Chakra exhaustion? This is the first time I’ve felt it.’

“Stop,” Hashirama told him, “any more and you will lose consciousness.”

Naruto protested, “but-”

Hashirama’s look quelled him. Naruto could definitely see how the man had earned and kept the position of Hokage; anyone who said the Mokuton was the main reason for the appointment hadn’t seen first-hand the man when he was serious.

“Understood, sensei,” Naruto said, not daring to object further. After the world shook, he drank the water Hashirama offered him. Then, he lay down on the ground and the next he knew, he woke up on a couch, covered by a blanket.

Hashirama was nowhere to be found; after calling for him a few times, Naruto did the hand seals to leave the seal and ended up in the Forest, alone, during what he thought was morning.

He decided to be a lot more cautious while leaving the forest, so he avoided the direction he remembered the tigers to have been at and headed in a straight line - making sure it was actually straight and not a circle, using the Academy teachings for that. Soon enough, he had reached the fence and left that place.

He made sure to leave markings so that he could find the tree again - unless all he saw was a dream. He wasn’t sure.

-----

That day at the Academy, Iruka actually seemed worried for him, but Naruto assured him that he was fine, that he couldn’t find the courage to enter the Forest. Hibachi ended up in trouble anyway - for some reason, though, instead of mocking Naruto, he was cursing Shikamaru.

After the Academy, the Old Man visited him and asked him where he had been at night.

Naruto decided to tell him the truth - he knew that the Old Man would be able to tell if he lied.

The man nearly dropped his pipe. After recovering his composure, he said, “what was ‘Shodai-sama’ like, Naruto?”

“Well,” Naruto said, “he was a bit of a goof. When I called him out on it, he hunched down; I could swear he had a storm cloud over his head. He kept saying how he gets no respect. When I worked myself to near-exhaustion, he told me to stop. When I protested, he just looked at me, and I couldn’t say anything other than ‘yes sir’.”

“I see,” the Old Man said, “for good or for ill, I doubt you dreamt that, Naruto; I also think that WAS the Shodai, however strange it sounds. This must be the project he told me he wanted finished before he died.”

“Ah! So, can I go again, can I go?!” Naruto said, enthusiastic.

“Not so fast, Naruto,” the Old Man said, “you will have to be escorted there - you know first-hand how dangerous that forest is. I would also like to speak to Shodai-sama, if at all possible - he was my sensei too, after all.”

A few days later, on the Old Man’s day off, the two of them went to the Forest of Death and Naruto tried to activate the seal. After a few failed tries, the Hokage suggested that he bleed on it; so, Naruto bit his lip with his canine teeth and spat the blood.

When the seal activated this time, Hashirama appeared in the real world instead of Naruto getting in.

“Hashirama-sensei!” Naruto shouted.

Hashirama looked around, when his eyes fell on the Old Man. He said, “Hiruzen, is that you? You’ve gotten old!”

Naruto chuckled a bit, but left the two of them alone, for some privacy. A few minutes later, the Old Man called him back and told him he was now certain that this was really the Shodai. The smile on his face was something Naruto didn’t see often.

Hashirama was glaring at Naruto, though. He said, “Hiruzen said that you spat on my tree. Is that true, Naruto?”

He didn’t manage to avoid being given a lump on his head.

-----

Naruto kept going to meet every day after the Academy, unless nobody was available to escort him. Hashirama was a good mentor for the boy, even though he was a harsh taskmaster. It took over six months for Naruto to reach a level of accuracy with thrown weapons that Hashirama considered barely passable for someone his age.

He has also started learning the Black Leg taijutsu style, which only included kicks, though Sanji’s version also had knee kicks.

Teacher and student also opened up to one another further. Naruto told Hashirama of how he was hated in Konoha and why he wanted to be Hokage, and Hashirama told him of how he had been betrayed by everyone he ever loved.

He said, “Tobirama went behind my back to become Nidaime; Madara turned on the village, deciding to destroy it, after he heard what Tobirama did; Mito cheated on me; still, I decided to forgive them, even if Tobirama was unrepentant.

>>But I just can’t let all that go completely. I was never the same - expecting Hiruzen to betray me too, I made this failsafe. Do you know that it wasn’t compatible with our clans only, but the Uchiha as well?”

“So, it could have been Sasuke in my place?” Naruto asked, still a bit insecure when comparing himself with Sasuke.

“I doubt it,” the man said, “from what you’ve told me of him, he only cares about revenge, not the village,” shaking his head.

-----

“Sakura,” Naruto said to the green eyed, pink-haired girl he found pretty, “could you help me a bit with history?”

Sakura growled a bit. She said, “I was about to go speak with Sasuke-kun,” visibly annoyed.

“If you always go to speak to Sasuke, you won’t find time for anything else. How do you even manage to keep your grades high like that?”

Sakura muttered something about being much smarter than Naruto, which the boy gamely ignored. Then, she said, “fine, I’ll help you. But you’d better not slack off!”

Naruto mentally thanked Hashirama for his advice. Success!

-----

“What’s a mnemonic system and mnemonic device?” Naruto asked.

Sakura was visibly impatient, but she explained the terms.

“So, you want me to improve my recall first? I never thought of such an idea. Wow, you’re so smart, Sakura!” Naruto said.

“Well, what do you know best?” Sakura asked

Naruto told her that history of the Hokage was what he knew best, and on other subjects, he knew Physics and Chemistry the best, with Math being a close third.

So, Sakura quizzed him on those subjects, in which he showed his knowledge.

“Seriously?” Sakura said, “I never knew you were actually smart, Naruto. You can even solve relatively complex equations in your mind - even Hinata and Sasuke-kun have a hard time doing that. Of course, Sasuke-kun is still the best!”

Naruto shook his head at her one-track mind, somewhat hypocritically, he admitted; but he wouldn’t call her out on it. Either way, Sakura taught him how to improve his memory by using existing knowledge and associating one thing with another, how to organize his notes both on paper and in his mind and more.

“How did you manage to memorize all that Science- and Math-related knowledge, though?” Sakura asked, “your memory wasn’t the best, before I taught you how to improve it.”

Naruto laughed sheepishly. He said, “ehehe, I did some experiments to see the results first-hand; I learn better by doing things. That’s called being a kinesthetic learner, right? As for Maths, I suppose that I’ve got a knack for it.”

Sakura muttered something about him losing a finger to an explosion. Naruto decided to keep quiet about the time he had burned his arm; fortunately, the medic-nins in the hospital treated it, without even having to use medical Chakra, and told him to move the arm around without fear; it would help with the healing and scar tissue. For some reason, there was no scar at all, though.

After Naruto learned how to memorize things better, he decided to be a medic-nin, so he asked both the Old Man and Hashirama-sensei when they were together. That was when Naruto found out a grave secret.

-----

“You might not ever be able to be a full-fledged medic-nin, Naruto,” the Old Man said in a weary tone.

“What? Why?” Naruto asked, worried.

Sarutobi explained what had happened with the Kyuubi ten years before. “So, the Yondaime sealed it into a baby with Uzumaki blood - you. With that particular seal, your Chakra is meant to mix with the Bijuu’s, so it might be toxic to others.”

Naruto was worried, but not devastated. He said, “then, I’ll find a way to avoid or beat that problem. And even if that doesn’t work, I’ll be a battlefield doctor without medical ninjutsu.”

Hashirama’s proud smile made him warm inside; that was when he realized that his sensei was the closest thing to a parent he had. Then, the man told him of how Mito had sealed the Nine-Tails within herself and the problems she faced with controlling her Chakra for a while. “She eventually overcame the troubles she had,” the man said encouragingly.

-----

After a lot of staying completely still and meditation, Naruto managed to improve his concentration enough to be pronounced ready to start medical training by Hashirama; his memory had been spotty mainly because he was too unfocused, apparently. He had also been promised an offensive skill greater than any other would be his if he perfected the skill of staying still as an extra incentive.

The man had studied Tsunade’s hand-written books (he gave some blood to Naruto, so that he had access to the Senju compound, to take them) and admitted that medicine had advanced much since his time; he was impressed by his granddaughter’s achievements. He was disappointed, too, because most of the books and notes had never been published.

Hashirama’s considerable knowledge of and skill at Fuuinjutsu was something that he tried to spread to Naruto, and it was the first field Naruto was discovered to have a natural aptitude for. According to the teacher, he might surpass even Mito someday, if he worked hard.

According to the man, using Fuuinjutsu to help in operations was something that Tsunade invented, but it shouldn’t be too hard for Hashirama himself to learn, thanks to Tsunade’s notes. Unfortunately, he couldn’t actually practice it.

Of course, sometimes Naruto had a hard time accepting what his teacher told him.

Naruto said, “what do you mean I should grow out my hair? I’ll end up looking like a girl dattebayo!”

Hashirama shook his head, looking exasperated. He said, “long hair on a man is a sign of vitality and both battle and sexual prowess.”

“I don’t want to look like a girl, though, sensei,” Naruto said, calmer this time.

Hashirama said, then, that there were jutsu that needed long hair to pull off well.

“Do you know such a jutsu, sensei?” Naruto asked, eager at the thought of a new jutsu.

The silence said it all.

Naruto sighed. He said, “fine, I’ll grow it out. But if I don’t find a hair-based jutsu in the next three years, I’ll cut it short.”

Hashirama nodded with a smile. He said, “this is a tradition from my time, Naruto. I’m glad you are giving it a chance.”

The other shoe dropped when Naruto was least expecting it, a year after he met Hashirama.

“What do you mean, you’re going away?!” Naruto shouted, panicking.

“I mean that I am essentially dying, Naruto. Even with help from the natural energy of the forest being converted by the seal. I can’t stay in the Impure World forever; my Chakra is running dry,” Hashirama said, a sympathetic look on his face.

Tears were streaming down Naruto’s face, sobs wracking his frame. “How long?” He asked, voice hoarse.

“Two or three weeks, if I use no jutsu,” the man admitted.

“Wait - when you were showing me your jutsu or turning on the time dilation field…,” Naruto said, stopping mid-sentence, horrified.

“Yes, I hastened my demise. But I couldn’t call myself your master if I didn’t do my best to teach you. Dry your tears, Naruto; I wasn’t even supposed to be here, but I’m glad I got to know you - to have a student one final time,” Hashirama said, smiling in a bittersweet way, in a combination of emotions Naruto was able to identify for the first time. “You were the son I never had, but you will have to let me go,” the man said.

Naruto refused to accept it - in the way only Naruto could, he decided to screw fate and destiny and substitute reality with his own. He said, “I refuse.”

“Wait, what?” Hashirama said.

-----

Hashirama POV

Hashirama wasn’t expecting such a vehement, resolute denial. Naruto went through familiar hand-seals, and the man was too taken aback to react in any way.

Hashirama could feel himself being sucked into another seal, and wondered how Naruto had learned that jutsu.

After a few moments, Hashirama saw a redhead who looked somewhat familiar. ‘So that’s how. This must be his mother, and she gave him instructions on how to save me; apparently, she did something similar to what my original did, but sealed her echo inside a person,’ he thought.

Then, he realized that the woman was fading. She mouthed ‘thank you for everything, Shodai-sama.’

So, Hashirama decided to do something he would have done in his youth. ‘Naruto is a really bad or really good influence on me. I’m not sure which,' he thought.

The man went up to the woman immediately and used something that suddenly came to mind… somehow. He linked his spiritual energy with the woman’s and transferred his own energy to her. Only, Naruto replicated what he did and gave Hashirama his own Chakra; except Naruto was much more efficient at it, despite Hashirama’s decades of experience.

‘I found something other than Fuuinjutsu Naruto has natural talent in,’ the man mused.

-----

Omniscient POV

With Naruto's Chakra maintaining the existence of both Hashirama and Kushina, his available reserves of energy plummeted. He went from the average Jounin's worth of Chakra to one fifth of that or less.

As an upside, he was able to talk to his mother, though it came with other downsides, as well.

As for Hashirama, he wracked his mind for who 'Ashura' was whenever he was awake.

*Yes, I did just write Sanji from One Piece into the story.

Not The Goddamn @dmin
Random world-building idea.

Kakashi has the highest number of failed missions of any ANBU.

There's a few reasons for that, but they mostly roll back around to one thing- Kakashi's teams don't die.

Normally in ANBU a failed mission is one where most if not all of your team don't come back- your first failure is typically your last one. As a result, Kakashi also has an oddly long ANBU career, and has the smallest casualty rate of any team leader.

Random Idea: a Naruto modelled after Vlad the Impaler (not the fictional version). Because someone needs to put the fear of God into those accursed heathens and warmongers. :p

It would be hilarious to see how Naruto the Impaler and Hidan react to each other.

Or maybe this will be a fic where Naruto was abused and tortured horribly, so he leaves Konoha for another village. Grateful to the village (Kumo? No, most likely a more minor one, that will require the extra brutality) that took him in, he decides to do everything in his power to protect it, as well as hurt Konoha.

So, anyone from Konoha he meets, he impales. Maybe in wartime, other countries' shinobi, as well as entire civilian villages from the Land of Fire, too.

Because canon Narutoverse isn't brutal enough to withstand such a horror.

Canon Naruto actually does have elements that approach that level of brutality, we just never see any of it directly onscreen. Hidden Rain being devastated by other nation's wars, Water Nation's civil war, the Jashin death cult, Nagato purging Hanzou's entire regime, Juugo's rampaging demon clan, Sasori wiped out an entire village as part of his backstory, Karin's village being slaughtered, the warmongering Kaguya clan, Uzushiogakure being completely razed to the ground and most of their shinobi slaughtered, etc.

The Narutoverse isn't a pleasant place to live, but it can seem that way because the story mostly focuses on the "nicest" village during a period of relative peace and economic stability and follows a standard idealistic shonen protagonist.

Those don't quite have the same effect as seeing your own people (or their corpses) impaled that way, though. Even Hidan simply stabbed Asuma a bit, then killed him.

Even a Kage would be intimidated a bit, though mostly furious, I believe. Then again, those who are furious are more likely to make mistakes.

But, the reason this idea appeals to me is that Naruto would actually have a reason for being dark beyond the usual fanfic fare (revenge and such), except that he saves the worst of his brutality for Konoha.

New Idea: a squad designed to hunt down all remaining Otsutsuki... and kill them.

The concept here starts with Hagoromo letting slip to Naruto that Hamura's descendants (see: Toneri) were supposed to attack humanity and end it if Chakra were ever weaponized. Months later, Naruto remembers what the Sage told him in a conversation with Tsunade and/or Kakashi.

Thus, Team Sakura (Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, with the fourth member being Hinata (for the Byakugan) or Konohamaru (for the junior member factor) or Hanabi (for both)) sets out for the search and destroy mission after intensive training.

Another (shadow of an) idea: Instead of the power of Indra and Ashura, someone (Hinata? Hanabi?) gets the powers of the children of Hamura. Or: Hiashi's wife was a Kaguya clan descendant.

Because the Mokuton, Sharingan and Rinnegan can get boring after so much repetition, and because the Shikotsumyaku plus Byakugan would make a devastating combination.

Hinata, though, will have health problems which will persist until Tsunade comes back to Konoha. Not severe, but bad enough to keep her Chakra usage at a minimum (a normal Genin's reserves, whereas she is supposed to reach higher levels than Kimimaro eventually, after being cured). Chakra Control is also affected.

The health problems are so that she is still seen as a failure by the clan. After all, if one has abysmal stamina, they can hardly train long enough to get actually good (Itachi is an exception, and even he only got sick AFTER he left Konoha, IIRC). Also, if one's Control is barely above average, they can hardly be very competent at the Juuken.
