Hinata's power was suppressed by her weak mentality until she overcomes it against Neji... at which point, she get her canonical heart problems caused by the fight.

Yeah, but I'm talking about a disease similar to Kimimaro's, except less severe (and more crippling in terms of Chakra production in the short term). She has the Shikotsumyaku, after all - any medic-nin other than Tsunade would be unable to cure her because of a unique physiology.

Besides, in the Databooks, her Stamina and physical strength are abysmal; it's not out of the question that she was also a bit ill in canon.

As for her mentality, bad performance might have been one of the reasons her confidence was shot, not just the other way around. As in, a vicious circle.

Edit: or would it be better for Naruto to be the Hyuuga+Kaguya bloodline possessor? He is an Uzumaki too, though - I don't want to take that away from him. Maybe take away the Kyuubi and make someone else its Jinchuuriki instead?

Nah, Naruto getting a bloodline is boring.

More interesting Hinata getting a second bloodline.

Anyway, my idea: Hinata is naturally relatively weak. Not VERY physically weak by itself but weaker-than-average, leading to not-stellar results that combined with her self-esteem issues generates the vicious circle we see her overcome in her fight against Neji.

After Tsunade is back, Hiashi asks her for a full checkup on Hinata, as he(who has overcome his own demons and opened again to his daughter) is worried for the long-lasting effects of the chakra blow to her heart.
Tsunade, being Tsunade, manages to notice the problem with her heart is that it's actually over-healing itself.
SCIENCE happens and Tsunade discovers Hinata's Dead Bone Pulse was basically always been "active in background", sapping\wasting her stamina and now was slightly more active because the heart wound but not enough, resulting in a messed up healing.

Some more SCIENCE later, Tsunade manages to fully awaken Hinata's Dead Bone Pulse, resulting in the full heal of her heart and no more stamina-drain. And the DBP bloodline limit of course.

Without the constant stamina-drain, Hinata's physical abilities grow very fast, which help her self esteem.
Using the DBP, though, she doesn't like at all and also is a weigth on her self-esteem because she believes it extremely creepy.

Most interesting thing would be see how Hinata would develop DBP.
She's not going to be a Kimimaro clone.

Yeah - maybe she would use more long-ranged attacks, similar to the Digital Shrapnel, and keep the Juuken for up-close fights? Or perhaps an exoskeleton that would protect against both the Juuken and other kinds of attacks? Maybe extra arms (skeletal ones). Arrows made of bone?

Yes, I stole some things from another of the Sound Five, Kidoumaru.

Yeah, I'd say range extension and defense upgrade\armor are the most likely outcomes... I wonder if she can cannel chakra through the bones? And if so, would it be precise enough to use Juken with it?

Giving Hinata an excuse for her lackluster performance up until now seems unnecessary. Either way she's going to improve big time and doing so feels, I don't know, cheap?

I'd treat her fight with Neji as a catalyst for awakening her other kekkei genkai but the nature of her injury caused complications when combined with the changes her body was undergoing to accomodate the bloodline. The result was that she'd regularly experience fits for months after the fight, only being suppressed by medicine/medical ninjutsu but not stopped entirely, making her too unreliable for active duty. After the Sasuke Retrieval Mission, she has one such fit while Tsunade's on the rounds (perhaps while trying to visit Naruto at the hospital) and since she'd taken an interest in Naruto's peer she saw to its personally.

Tsunade works her magic, Hinata's back to full health with the bonus of super tough bones under her control and Naruto and Lee lose their shit (in a good way) seeing her with the same ability Kimimaro used to whoop their asses.

Having DBP start in background after the Neji fight is fine, too.

I'm unsure whether have her being healed and developing active DBP during or before Naruto leaves the village.

Maybe it's cheap, but it would be a good excuse for her to have low stamina (as per canon), despite being a Kaguya clan member. She has never been lazy, after all, and simply lacks confidence.

I just don't see the need to make excuses for it at all myself. If she's got low stamina (which isn't all that different from the rest of the girls) then so be it, it's something she can focus on improving if she wants.

The rest of the girls (Sakura and maybe Ino) are lazy; Anko, Konan and Tsunade - adult Sakura as well, most likely, have huge reserves. Same with Temari, Sarada and Chocho, to a point. The only one who legitimately has low reserves is Tenten, I think.

You do have a point about Hinata simply improving her stamina, though.

Ino's had the top grades in the academy and is shown to be highly motivated in general, she ain't lazy. The others are grown-ups, Temari's still around three years older and isn't that far ahead in stamina and the next gen girls have different stats altogether. Low stamina doesn't necessarily means laziness, it just means that they're focused in other areas.

Personally, I'd say that this is just overthinking things. No one's gonna pull out the pitchforks because Hinata not being a chakra beast breaks their SOD. And like I said, making her stamina a part of the struggle can add to the story.

Before. Regardless of the story's direction, I can't help but think that Naruto's reaction is gonna be important to her and stringing that out for the two-and-a-half year wait sounds annoying.

What kind of story would this be anyway? Is it about Hinata getting the Shikotsumyaku and the repercussions there of? Or would this be a subplot in a grander story?

If it is it's own story then I'd wonder where it's going. Hinata isn't the most compelling character and stories that aren't focused on Naruto are a hard sell anyway.

It could work as a novella; dealing with the 'illness', awakening the KKG, learning to it use, being cleared for duty and then maybe a mission with Naruto and co for the main conflict and climax. Or take that a little further and conclude with the next Chuunin Exams where she demonstrates the Shikotsumyaku's revival on a 'global' stage.

Throw in her family's reaction to her KKG, potential knowledge of the family's anciestry that could have led to it, trying to mesh the KKG with her Byakugan (shouldn't be hard) and Gentle Fist (actually seems quite hard) and the simple fact that she can spontaneously do stuff like like this because damn that would freak anyone out...

Several miscellaneous ideas, some full of crack, others not.

Sometime during the attack on Konoha 'Madara' figures out Kakashi's ANBU identity. He isn't as set in his brainwashed ways yet and this gives him the ability to snap out of the methodical plan, and to due what he really wanted to do. Kill Kakashi.

Obito going out of his way to kill Kakashi ends up tipping his hand, and for his death Konoha gains knowledge that Obito is alive and is an enemy.

With Kakashi dead the Third, to the village at least, had no choice but to refuse to take the hat back. Simply put, Kakashi still being loyal and active was needed to project a complete image of Konoha that was strong, and with out him other measures had to be taken.

The Third is left no other choice but to lie his ass of get his choice into the chair. "Btu Jiraiya, it was part of his final orders as Hokage. You wouldn't deny your honored apprentice this, his last wish, would you?"

"Fine, Sensei"

"Good, then with you back in the village you won't have any difficulty on the rest of his final orders. Meet your Godson Naruto."

As consequence as Jiraiya being Hokage Naruto has a hope of a happy home life.

Meanwhile the lack of spy master results in a rather.... gennin team.

"Anko, Asuma, Kurenai. Welcome. Congratulations but you are being demoted to gennin. Not any normal genning though. Mine. You shall be my final gennin team in the light of day, and in the dark of night maintain Konoha's spy network. I hope you have pretty good henges. Welcome back to teenhood" - Jiraiya.

This of course leave the Third in the place he was in retirement. In the shadows. Just where he liked it,
"For a moment Sarutobi you had me worried"
"Don't wory, Danzo my old friend, I find myself quite liking my new roll. Now where were we?"
"There is this delightful little country just waiting for freedom Sensei, Kukukuku!"
"But first there is this little issue of Obito we need to take care of.... He may become a problem to our plans."
"Why?"
"He disobeyed me. He killed this bodies wife. She was... Amusing"
"But even the great Madara must have tired constantly having her under genjutsu, ne?"

Superfluously contrived.

Why cannot Sarutobi have Jiraiya do the work he's going to do? Also: the village learning of Obito means what for the Uchiha? They aren't going to be too happy of getting another Senju follower in the role
And why the fuck would Anko, Kurenai and Asuma need to be demoted?

As I said it was several ideas, so lets tackle them separate. (As all together it is a giant ball of mud. Might have been better if I just listed them all as bullet points instead of forcing them all together.)

Why cannot Sarutobi have Jiraiya do the work he's going to do?

Idea boiled down to the core: After the Kyuubi attack Jiraiya becomes Hokage and raises Naruto. "Why the change?" could either be unexplained, left up to a last request, or some other circumstance. Like the other idea, "Kakashi dies during the Kyuubi Attack."

Also: the village learning of Obito means what for the Uchiha? They aren't going to be too happy of getting another Senju follower in the role

Yeah, this could go a couple of ways, one could be 'Uchiha's are innocent, no massacre' another could be 'Obito was the student of the fourth, this tarnishes his legacy', another could be a concerted effort to eliminate the threat.

And why the fuck would Anko, Kurenai and Asuma need to be demoted?

Pure crack & wacky hi-jinx. Staring Anko, who learns she likes her henged life better than her real one considering her henged life lacks Village Hate (TM). Co-staring Asuma as a lovable overly serious protaganist with a complex against his father interfering with everything, and Kurenai who henges so good combined with a shock of kyuubi chakra gets stuck in her henge.

Coming this fall to TBS.

Been working on ideas that would work as a short story along the same kind of lines as Spying no Jutsu.

1) Naruto and his team are sent on a escort mission to protect a group of nobles on a vacation in the Land of Hot Water. Normally this would use ninja higher ranked than genin but the nobles wanted to be attended by ninja more for the novelty rather than desiring genuine protection. They reached Yugakure - otherwise known as the village that had forgotten wars - in time for the annual festival they wished to attend. But the celebration had an undercurrent in tension given the ongoing arguments about the village demilitarization and rumors of bloody slaughters around the countryside.

The most vocal of its opposition was their strongest ninja, Hidan, who had since given allegiance to Jashin and survived the forbidden ritual of immortality as rewards for his massacres. And he intends his first offering to his god since his 'rebirth' to be every man, woman and child in Yugakure.

2) The mission came from the Land of Waves who specifically requested Naruto's team after the legend that had been built the last time he was there. There had been reports of disturbances along the northern side of the island nation near the Uzushio Ruins of a sea creature that had been disturbing the underwater ecology with its presence and harming the fishing boats and ships that had gone out to sea. The objective was to find and eliminate whatever animal was interfering with the local shipping business.

However the animal, it turns out, is none other than the Three Tailed Turtle (nicked the idea from filler but whatever) that had finally revived following its jinchuuriki's death. Unfortunately, this discovery reached the ears of Kiri as well who were willing to do everything in their power to retrieve their Tailed Beast to recuperate from the many losses caused by the Fourth Mizukage's reign. What began as an search and destroy mission turned into something that could potentially lead to war between Konoha and Kiri at a time they can't afford to fight.

3) A messenger from one of the Land of Fire's towns in the north, near the border itself, sends word of a demon causing panic among the people as it hid amongst them. Naruto's team is sent to find the 'demon' and either capture it for containment and research or simply kill it depending on how dangerous it is. Upon reaching the town and finding the demon in question, they discover that it was actually a human with Orochimaru's cursed seal who had successfully escaped from the northern hideout. In exchange for his protection, the prisoner reveals everything he knows about the hideout including the dozen of cursed seal test subjects imprisoned inside.

The mission becomes one to destroy the hideout, free their prisoners and capture Orochimaru's followers for information. Ideally without drawing the attention of Orochimaru himself before the job is done.

4) Miners from the Land of Iron hired Konoha ninja to investigate a series of thefts of a sizable quantity of their metal ores. Normally they would rely on their samurai but they had repeatedly failed to prevent these crimes, enough to frustrate the miners into hiring foreigners. As it turns out, the thieves were being hired by a faction of samurai aiming to increase dissatisfaction with the current order and supply them with resources. And they were not pleased to be interfered with.

5) Naruto's team is sent on a courier mission to Kusa where they are intercepted by a foreign party who steal their package. To avoid failing the mission, they seek to track the enemy and retrieve the package before the alloted time limit has passed. The enemy's aim is to sour the relationship between Konoha and Kusa to help rob them of allies after losing half their forces in the invasion but their allegiance is unknown.

They may belong to one of the other Great Hidden Villages intended to kick Konoha while it's down but could even be Kusa itself seeking an excuse to end their alliance with the weakened village in favour of another. The team doesn't know and the potential for things to get even more dangerous puts them in a precarious position.

After the successful completion of their second C-rank mission of [insert a random objective here] without the conflict escalation of their previous one, Team 7 was on their way back to Konoha through a mountainous region.

Unfortunately, they end up encountering a pair of ninja forces fighting against one another on their own mission and try to escape being embroiled in it themselves. But when one of the ninja tap into the dragon veins to fuel their earth ninjutsu, they accidentally triggers an large-scale earthquake as the area they were fighting in was a particularly large fault zone.

The fighting, magnitude of the quake and the damage it inflicted on the mountain all served to separate the team. Naruto, in particular, ended up further away than the others which left him vulnerable to a landslide that drove him all the way done into the rivers below.

He fell and was swept away.

Cold and wet, battered and bruised, Naruto awoke in the middle of the night after washing up on the shore.

His clothes had taken a beaten, his headband was missing, his pouches were mostly empty and he couldn't see his backpack. He had no idea where he was, how long he'd been unconscious or where his team was. All he knows is that he needs to find his team and his way home.

And he has nothing to rely on except his fists, his wits and his shadow clones.

---

So the purpose of this story idea, more than anything, is for Naruto to discover and explore the uses of the Shadow Clone Jutsu.

But having Naruto just sit at home and jot down ideas for different clone tactics or practicing in a training ground is boring. Instead we have an extreme survival exercise where Naruto has to get home with limited resources and limited skills. He's got whatever he remembers from the academy, some E-rank ninjutsu, slightly better chakra control and, of course, his shadow clones.

In return, he has to deal with dangerous plant life, giant killer animals, bandits, highwaymen and/or ninja in an unfamiliar country. Without easy access to food, rest and medicine, any fights he gets into are more dangerous and would require more tactical thinking to sruvive.

Naturally, his best tool and weapon are going to be his shadow clones for helping him fight, scout locations, find food and search for his missing team. So he could learning how far his shadow clones can travel, whether they stay around when he's unconscious, how memory is recalled when they dispel, how many he can maintain for how long, the best number to use in a fight, etc.

I like it- I used something very similar for Symbiosis, except it was Naruto and Sasuke that got separated with a crippled Zabuza and as a result they all get caught in the Mist civil war that let Mei assume leadership.

You may want to focus a bit on the complete and utter social isolation- Naruto IS a social person, he feeds off attention and energy, and there's nothing there.

Leading to deep, philosophical questions like "Does it count as talking to myself if I'm talking to a clone?" or "If clones can eat and drink, do they need to use the bathroom too?" as he starts keeping clones around for company.

That can only lead to dark places as he becomes more and more unstable, and starts treating his clones as real people.

Could end up with interesting consequences- Naruto starts tapping into the Kyuubi and fighting like a berzerker- every time a clone goes down, he treats it like you just ripped Sakura's throat out in front of him.

Killing a Naruto should aggro every Naruto in a 40 yard radius- after all, you've just killed their best friend.

<"I have called everyone here to call attention to traitorous behavior by an important military asset. Uzumaki Naruto, explain yourself: are you or are you not in possession of the Mokuton bloodline?" Danzo said, addressing both the council and Naruto.

Naruto locked in place in astonishment. Soon enough, though, he regained his cool, ignoring the rest of the council's whispers. He said, "important military
asset? Traitorous behavior? What are you talking about, Danzo-sama?"

"I asked you a question, Genin. Are you incapable of answering it?" Danzo said.

"I do have Mokuton. What of it?" Naruto said challengingly.

The whispers turned into murmurs and even outright speaking. Naruto and Danzo both ignored those things in favor of a staring contest which Naruto eventually lost, unable to meet the eye of such a piece of trash.

Danzo said, "do you see now, honorable council? If he had been given to me to begin with, there wouldn't be such problems," making Inuzuka Tsume snort.

"I fail to understand why you care, Danzo-'sama'. What is this nonsense about me being an 'important asset'?" Naruto said in a mocking tone.

Hyuuga Hiashi then spoke up. He said, "do you or do you not know about being the container of the Kyuubi, Uzumaki Naruto?"

Naruto said, "I know that I am not," deciding to take a great risk, "I am simply the scapegoat for the real Kyuubi Jinchuuriki."

Silence. Instead of the uproar he expected, nobody spoke. He still took advantage of their surprise by forcing Chakra into his legs and jumping to the ceiling, sticking to it and making a hand-seal. He said, "now die," but instead of an offensive jutsu, he prepared a Kawarimi and Moku Bunshin.

Two ANBU attacked him, only to die because of a large log full of explosive tags, while he made the Wood Clone he had prepared, giving it a shuriken. Hiashi was not fooled and prepared his Sixty Four Palms, but the clone threw the shuriken at him and the rest of them and used Shuriken Kage Bunshin to multiply it, all the while the original used a Wind ninjutsu to speed the projectiles up. Hiashi was only delayed a bit, but he was forced to abort his jutsu in order to break through the Wood Clone's Suijinheki, which also stopped Aburame Shibi's insects for a few seconds.

The latter was impaled by one of the shuriken thrown by the Wood Clone - in the heart, no less. Inuzuka Tsume put her arm in front of her face, having that arm mangled and also losing the eye that the raised limb was protecting, barely managing to stop the projectile from piercing the bone.

By the time Hiashi managed to dispel the clone (Shibi's insects went berserk soon after his fatal injury), the original Naruto had simply disappeared. As a final 'fuck you' to the council, the Wood Clone used 'Clone Great Explosion' to try to kill Hiashi. Hopefully, he would fail to use Kaiten.

All of that was to buy enough time for Naruto to use Hiraishin, which he hadn't fully mastered yet, so it took him a few seconds of concentration.>

This is from a fic idea of mine where Naruto and Biwako (=femSasuke) become friends and rivals shortly after the Uchiha Clan Downfall.
