It's been a really long time since I watched the show so this make have come up and I just forgot but, why were Toji and Kensuke accompanying Misato and Shinji when they went to get Asuka?

I think (it's been a long time since I actually watched the show) that Misato told Shinji that he could invite them. Probably to make it more fun for Shinji. And to see how he'd react around people he's supposed to be friends with, I think.

My take on it was that Misato wanted Shinji to socialise with his friends and this was as good an opportunity as ever.

Plus, there's always that ego boost of having two people willing to do anything you ask of them following you around.

I don't recall that anyone ever actually said why they were there. Or why Shinji was there for that matter. Misato could reasonably be there for work, but there's no good reason to bring Shinji, leaving Tokyo-3 unprotected and putting one of their rare pilots at risk.

If I recall correctly, Gendo and Fuyutsuki were aware (or believed that) the next Angel would attack from the ocean.

If I recall correctly, the two of them (and Seele) seemed to know / had some idea of the timetable for the Angel's attacks. If true, then I don't doubt that Gendo felt it was no big risk to send Shinji off with Misato. And maybe meeting Asuka would push Shinji futher along Gendo's agenda.

If that was the case they why not send his Eva along too? There was no reason to think he would pilot Unit 02 with Asuka there, or even that it would be possible for him to if she wasn't. Didn't this take place after testing had shown that Rei couldn't operate 01, and that Shinji couldn't use 00? Gendo might be an ass, but even he wouldn't send Shinji to fight an Angel with whatever piece of pipe he found laying around the ship.

They're taking delivery of an Eva, so shipping the working Unit-01 out there to pick it up would be incredibly inefficient.

Not to mention raise questions that Gendo would rather not answer.

Of course, this does beg the question: did Gendo have Unit-1 strapped to a plane for emergency delivery, just in case, ala Unit-3?

Probably not. He wouldn't dare risk Unit 01 needlessly.

Which means he probably had Unit-0 strapped to the plane instead.
