Official Computer Help Thread

I just turned on my laptop tonite after spending a few hours away, and my fucking computer completely reset itself. Lost all my saved files, passwords, etc. Anyone got an idea why this shit happened?

EDIT: After spending a few hours on it, I went to sleep. And upon waking, the laptop was back to the way it had been - seemingly no reset. I fucking feel like I'm losing my damn mind, here.
Sorry, somehow the alert got lost in my e-mail and I just found it while cleaning up my inbox. Nobody else has offered suggestions.

  • If it's running Windows 10+, especially the "home" edition, there is a good chance it was Windows Update deciding to reboot your computer. The warning came while you were away, and it set a silent countdown that expired. I really wish that it would do what XP did for a scheduled shutdown and pop up a modal dialog box with the countdown, or at least handle it the way Windows 7-8.1 did with putting it in the notification area and making it so it doesn't disappear from there instead of the way Win10 does where if you dismiss the notification there is no more warning until the computer shuts down. Windows update in 10 & 11 is even worse with reboots as once you dismiss the dialog there is no more warning.
  • Alternately it could be a failing power supply, although that usually results in the computer shutting down, not rebooting.
  • Far less likely could be bad RAM or the RAM needing to be reseated. You could try pulling out and reinserting the SODIMMs if the laptop RAM is accessible. Some models they take pains to make it so the user can't get into the case.

  • This is a laptop, so unless the battery is removable and not present this shouldn't be it, and definitely not it if it is on battery, but on desktops It could be that a power cord is loose. Sometimes if the plug is 90-99% inserted it might cut out, but again that usually results in the computer turning off, unless the BIOS is set to turn on after a power outage (sometimes called interrupt). I've diagnosed many systems where somehow the plug got just a little bit out, like 1/16 of an inch from the power bar and that was causing the computer to power off without warning. If the BIOS is set to turn on the computer after a power outage, it would appear to reset. If the battery is removable and you were on battery it is possible that it wasn't put on right and the thing just came loose and disconnected for a second, but usually the laptop would turn off, not reboot.

Thanks for the response. It's working fine now, but as soon as I can afford it, I'm having my local repair guy take a look.

I am using my Fire 10 tablet primarily as my laptop is being repaired. When I open my emails in Outlook, for some damn reason they keep opening in a new window. How do I change this? It only started today, and I fucking hate it.

I've never used a Fire tablet, so I'm unsure if it differs, but a Bing search says to do the same as a desktop:
  • In the Outlook Settings (Gear icon on top right)-->View all outlook settings-->Mail-->Customize actions
  • Under Message surface, ensure that "Open in new window" is unselected and Save.
I would suggest making further searches using Bing if this doesn't help. While I normally prefer Google, Bing tends to give better results for Microsoft products and services, which shouldn't be that surprising considering who owns & operates Bing.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

does anyone know a safe image search program for finding multiples of the same image?

If you mean finding duplicates on the internet, then I used to use TinEye Reverse Image Search. I've not used it in years though. Not sure about how safe it is though.

Well... I've not used one in a number of years, but he last one I had used (which was old even back when I did last use it) seems no longer on the web... but I am aware of a couple others...

Note that supposedly if you use Windows 10 or 11, you can actually do this to a limited degree with Microsoft Photos, but it does so by making you add all the pictures to its source list and letting it scan every image into its database. I've never tried that, as while I use Photos to view images sometimes, do not ever use it as a source repository.

I've not used them... but three come to mind that are supposedly free...

Auslogics Duplicate File Finder
- https://www.auslogics.com/en/software/duplicate-file-finder/

Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder
- https://www.duplicate-finder.com/photo.html

VisiPics
- https://visipics.info

Note: While as I've said I've never used the one above, I have used some Free versions of Auslogics software in the past... the ones I've used have been good, but do have offers during installation and also popups and offers for versions while using you do have to pay for... just make sure to always answer no or deselect them...

If the files are identical, you can use this utility. Note it is optimized for general files, not similar photos such as when you take to shots of a person in case they blink. I use it for finding duplicates in my fanfic library for instance with crossovers.
https://doubles.sourceforge.net/#Download
Basically if the FC /bin command would report no differences, it will find the duplicate.
