Okay, this is going a bit too far.

I found this article while browsing a Naruto/Sakura forum.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11115376/

 I love anime like the next guy, but this... it TOO much! I've seen it featured in anime shows (the sterotypical Otaku) but I never thought I'd see it in real life! Well, okay, as close to real life without visiting someone (reading the article here).

Oh, and that guy, has no intentions of getting married or getting a girlfriend. I mean, it's fun to live in a dreamworld every so often but this is rediculous!

Yes, I agree with you there.

I'm in the process of buying my first house and I will have no disposable income for many years, but if the otaku can stay with their parents (like the stereotypical US nerd living in the basement) then why should they move out?

They can spend much of their income on things like anime DVDs, action figures or even foreign holidays.

And that's a lot more appealing than spending all your money on things like a mortgage and utility bills.

True. I mean, typical loser nerd. Living in his parents basement, watching Star Trek episodes all day or playing Warcraft III since, he spends whatever amount of money on feeding his fantasy instead of getting a real job (probably still working at the local McDonalds, if he even has a job).

BUT, if you have read the article, this guy apparently does have his own apartment at least. He is a computer programer if memory serves me right (I haven't read the article now now, but it's in that field). So money wise, he isn't really hurting.

What is though is the fact that, well, he would rather live in his fantasy world, than to have actual girlfriends/wife/family. This IMO, simply not healthy! Not only does he have those figurines (made fun of on a number of anime series. <_< Like Star Trek making fun of Tekkies. ). And, as the article points out, since these nerds are becoming more mainstream in Japan (I guess I should have added this part in my original rant. HEY, I'm new at this! ), you're having entire communties of these otakus living in their fantasy world!

And what's worse, they even now have Comic Book maids (well, manga maids) cafes that continuously feed into this fantasy. Imagine cafes with the waitresses wearing Warcraft or Trekkie clothing.

Oh, and one more thing. The guy not caring about having a girlfriend/wife/family, he has life sized anime dolls to keep him happy. <_<

Yeah, that's more than a little bit creepy. It's things like that the give otaku a bad name.

Quoth the server: 404. What exactly was the article about? I get that the general thing was about some typical, living-in-his-parent's-basement nerd (I live in a two-room house modified from a storage shed in my parent's backyard, does that count?), but beyond that?

It was just talking about how mainstream Japanese nerd culture is becoming where as it used to be one of the most secretive sub-cultures of them all. It's so big now that the entire Akihabara district is now pretty much their personal otaku district.

Well, would it be better if someone nuked the place? Probably not, knowing this planet it would that just mutate everyone into something worse.

And knowing otaku, that something worse would probably include tentacles.

I don't quite see what all the fuss is.

It's his money, his life, he's not hurting anyone, and doing his part to stimulate the economy. Heck, they have actually made a whole business out of it. Increased tourism/consumerism...What's not to like? :p

Sure, I believe its much different from the way we lead our lives, but still...

cant really blame him. anime chicks are soo much hotter than real ones. however i wouldnt buy one of those dolls... today (mainly becouse they take much more space than an entire manga series does). im hoping (against hope) that those cafees will come to sweden tho.

...I have nothing to say about these comments.

Other than the fact that not all animÚ chicks are hotter than human chicks.

*sighs*

Makes me wonder if being in love is worth it.

There is no reason why these people should be, oppressed by the government. Again, like runestar said, if they are not hurting anyone else, they should go ahead do what they want with their money.

But that doesn't make it anymore healthy though. I mean, these people are basically living in a fantasy world of anime, even having full sized anime dolls as companions. Again, I love anime, and it is a nice escape to escape from reality every once in a while. But NOT 24/7 either!

Yes, whilst it's true that the real world sucks, we can't spend all our spare time living in these fantasy worlds.

I'd love to be able to spend all my free time watching anime and writing fanfiction, but life's not like that. You have to go outside from time to time.

And I'm not just talking about when they're having the basement fumigated!

:p

I go outside to burn heretics, kill mutants, and purge the unclean. Does that count?

I dunno, so they have a few quirks - the article makes them seem like some sort of circus freak... :(

You never went to a comic convention, did you? True, bona fide otaku ARE freaks, period. Their obsession reaches unhealthy levels.

The solution to this dilemma is obviously the construction and use of a Death Star.

Once you've seen Man-Faye, nothing else will traumatize you. Period.

Open one and I'll be there, count on that.

Sweden could do with more manga/anime in general even if things have improved somewhat in recent years, but a maid cafee... Now that'd be something! :)~

Heck, if I had a bit more money stashed away, I'd seriously consider opening an Otaku Cafe/Book/DVD-shop, peddling manga, anime, figurines'n shit with an area where one could order drinks'n snacks from cosplaying girls and have a chat with likeminded freaks while obsessing over their recent purchases. Oh, and some sort of membership library club thingie, where members are allowed to lend dvd's and mangas for a couple of days, all for a modest membership fee.

...

Ahhh, capitalism at it's best. Sell to the rich and lease to the poor. :)
