One Piece Manga Discussion

The thing is, I've read one or two good one piece fics and laid disappointed because they all rather seemed to fall really flat compared to the actual manga.

One Piece is just so ridiculously outlandish in a good way that nothing that anyone else can think up will ever hold a candle to the original author. For example, Luffy faces off against a new pirate crew which is somewhat sympathetic from the get go and has some cool sounding characters in a fic. It sounds interesting. You look at the manga and they are in an island ship full of odd looking undead creations and it seems like they are losing to a character you very much grow to hate. It is even more interesting, and it makes the fic look worse in comparison.

I had a firmly established belief that the more one person dislikes the actual canon of a story the more likely they are to write a fic to correct whatever it is that they don't like. For example look at Ranma. While a lot of people liked the manga, they were left very unsatisfied, so fics where written. Look at Naruto. People hate the canon so they write fics to correct whatever flaws they most hate.

Definitely far too visual to make it more accesible to most writers who would start the fire. At least for a fic that fit the pattern of the manga's gags and fights with focus on the day by day progression( or Adventure by Adventure) with a grasp of the storyline.

You can find a flood pairing fics that just move toward the plot point for the relationship and then revolve around that. A majority of that being the LuffyNami pairing or any number of yaoi pairings( the result of too few female crew members in a group of people at sea for long periods of time :p . That and the insults or the loyalty from the recruitment). Of course there are the humor fics that don't give much of anything but a laugh.

Peroxidepest17's Thirteen Going on Fourteen was one I liked, even with the author's preferences.

The best One Piece fanfiction of come across have been introspective pieces on the characters, either their feelings before a critical(and more than likely epic) moment in the storyline or an expansion on their pasts.

I could do without all the OC crew members that pop up in some of the written fanfiction. That and the Sanji bashing in the pairings, I cringe at some of the 'explanations'.

Well someone could probably write a fic based on the 20-truths format on one of the myriad of characters. I could try it but I don't think I could do justice to them, any of them. But it does make you wonder. I guess until someone is not satisfied at something that happened, we may never get them. We'll just have to wait and see.

That will most likely come about near the end, with the actual ending have the greatest potential to upset people.

Re-reading the last chapter for the fourth time I predict that what happens during or after saving Ace could potential spark a few fics. Like say if Hancock dies, someone who wants her to join would probably write something etc.... who knows...

I'm still in the air about Boa, and as of now, I can't see her as part of the crew. And it's just of matter of when they're going to twist that 'death by love sickness' bit.

But I can see a few stories on the 'what if' side concerning whether or not Luffy saves Ace or not.

I think that once the story progresses to the New World, there will be an increase in fics, because of the addition of new Pirate Crews on par with the Straw Hats. It means that they can become recurring characters, and hopefully open the door to some more in depth character development, especially if the author starts top weave a few threads of romonace into the story.

There is a really good Luffy/Zoro fic. Granted its written by a Yaoi loving author, and the story is unfortunately yaoi. But it goes eight chapters deep without dropping the bomb that its yaoi, and even then. Its only as undertones, there's no actual scenes involving it.

If anyone's interested, here it is: Final Betrayal

There is nothing as beautiful as a popular thread created by you. :blue:

Anyway, great chapter, lovesickness LOL, yadda yadda...

Wait, One Piece fanfiction? Ai Tennshi has some good stories of his/her own, and has some more bookmarked. "Will Passed On" comes highly recommended by Watashiwa. :sisi:

And there was an absolutely hysterical One Piece fic where Zoro and Sanjidie of old age, and make Soul Society their bitch. :snigger:

Nehszriah is okay as well; just watch for Yaoi tendencies and major angst.

one other bit....I just considered if Luffy does go ahead and invade Impel Down or the holy city and is sucessful how will this look to the WG that a pirate has successfully invaded two of their most secure sites and caused havoc?
how much do you think his bounty will increase by? especially with the fact that he beat up a Noble?

yea but he's gonna essentially make a mockery of the world gov. for like the 2nd or third time

I bet we would see a radical increase of his bounty due to the Tenryuubito wanting him dead and what they want they get. Plus, if he succeed in saving Ace at Impel down... hehehehe it's going to be awesome. I can't wait.

Sadly, nothing recommended was as good the manga.
On the other hand...
Why did it take so long for this thread to start?

I didn't know the existence of this particular thread if I wasn't bored and was poking around TFF for something of interest. Maybe that's why.

I'd never seen One Piece talked about on this forum since I joined and assumed it was generally disliked here. One of those unwritten rules.

It came up in the Naruto Ideas section. But only for a little bit.

Why did this thread not exist? Because One Piece fans are a rare bunch anywhere save Japan.

In order to be able to like One Piece, you have to realize that it is a parody, the same way TTGL is a parody. Both series take a genre, create a (somewhat) unique scenario and then start ridiculous narrative where the tropes and cliches of the genre are used and taken beyond the extreme, to the point where the cliche becomes awesome again.

Indeed. This guy takes Crouching Moron Hidden Badass to the extreme. Good god, the entire crew can lay down some epic when they get to it.

If I'm not mistaken, One Piece is the first pirate manga I've seen from Japan. Anybody knows if there is another manga of a similar vein?

The creeeeeeeeeeeeew~!

We finally find put what happens to the rest of the Straw Hats this chapter!

Also, I love Luffy's invasion plan. Sneak onto the Marine ship by hiding under Hancock's skirt.

Luffy is a man among men.

Lastly, it seems that Sanji is in his personal Hell: an island of transvestites.

   :D

I had suspected that they would allow Boa a contingent of her crew and that Luffy was goin to be dressed as a woman. I also had the thought that he'd attach himself to Boa, but from the front and we'd have a pregnancy gag-undoubtedly overlooked, because she is beautiful.

I'm concerned about the extreme luck both Nami and Franky had in their landings. I mean Nami, navigator extrodinaire, knowledgable of the seas and winds, user of the Clima Tact just got blown onto a weather researching island. And that rope was damn impressive. Then you have cyborg, SUPER~ handyman/artisan/craftsman Franky on an island that supposedly fosters genius. They even have a cyborg, hunting dog. Should we get a few chapters concerning the crews time at the island we're likely going to see a big push in their powers thanks to something gifted or found by them during their stay. I don't doubt that Chopper, Brook, Robin and Zoro could find themselves in similar situations, and that's kind of deflating since it's not apparent that Luffy got a crash course in Haki. That was something I wasn't too big on.

But it could always go the other way if Sanji's landing was any clue, though he might pull a Brook and run across the ocean, after beating down a few of his chasers, and end up with more bite to his full-course kicks.

Any thoughts on the types of islands the rest of the crew found themselves on?

I wasn't surprised to see that Garp had went to see Ace, and it's likely he'll stay there for Luffy's attempt, but the news of the other pirates got me. Whitebeard was a given to do something, Shanks not too unlikely, but a whole slew of other New World bound crews?

Next chapter(s) will likely have the rest of the crew spotlighted and hopefully have their travels done during the three or so days trip Luffy has until Impel Down. Though considering the set-up will Luffy just have to cling to her the entire time? They're will be a lot of strange looks from the marines if they have to see giant sized portions of food going to Boa's room every meal. :snigger:

Don't you recall? They got blown away by Bartholomew Kuma, a Shichibukai KNOWN for asking people where they want to be sent (he did so to Perona back at Thriller Bark).

Furthermore, he probably has a real respect for Zoro, and by extension Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats. Sending them places where they could level up isn't that surprising.

Once a pirate, always a pirate. But also, if Kuma knows about any World Government Crimes?, his self-professed Morals of Justice? might encourage him to aid the people who can right those wrongs.
