One Piece Manga Discussion

While there might be no One Piece this week, there is still a need to create a place to talk about our speculations, thoughts and favorite moments from this wonderfully zany series!

Let's start with a basic question: what's going to happen in the next chapter? Luffy is facing off against the Gorgon sisters, who seem to have (yet another) weird, non-Devil's Fruit power. We know Luffy will be fine, but I'm curious: how do you think it's going to go down?

More pressing: where's the rest of the crew? Image and I (speaking of which, WHEN are you going to stop lurking, oh friend of mine?) thought that it would be hysterical if all the Strawhats came back to Shabondy Park with an army at their backs: Luffy with the Amazons (after becoming the most beautiful (strongest) person on the island), Sanji the Rosy Life Riders, Chopper with an army of doctors, Usopp with giants, Zoro with swordsmen, etc.

Just a crack thought, but given how freakishly charismatic the crew seems to be (when they want to be), I can see his happening.

Honestly I'm unsure about how I want things to go. But at the same time I do.

The Gorgon Sisters loss, Boa Hancock included, is likely a given before Luffy leaves the island. Marigold and Sandersonia will be knocked out in the fight that was prompted in last week's chapter, and Boa's situation with the World Government will likely have her siding with Luffy(Likely after a semi-fight that persists on his immunity to her power). That will lend itself well to the arriving Gov't battleship that the Kuja Pirates had raided before.

Luffy will have gotten the stoned women reverted, gotten himself a ride(and a possible contingent of Amazon Warriors) and the Haki boost to get him powered up-This one I'm kind of hoping doesn't fall that way.

I don't have any real thoughts on others aside from:

With the exception of Luffy and possibly Zoro the other crew members got blasted away in pairs/groups because it could be quite a few chapter before the crew gets together:
-Nami, Robin(maybe Zoro)
-Ussop, Sanji, Brook
-Franky, Chopper
Where they end up is as in the air as they air.

Ack, my faculties are failing. I have to refresh myself on the last few chapters, probably as far as the fight with Kuma.

In any case, concerning the split, I don't really like the fact that they were all blasted away. I really hope that it doesn't lead to another power-up for each character(or at least the heavy hitters), and that Oda gets them back together fairly quickly.

Oh, and Luffy will be truly beautiful.

At last! New material!

Well, the new chapter is certainly interesting. Luffy vs. the Gorgon sisters--who have BOTH eaten the Hebi Hebi fruit.

This changes some of my theories--I used to think that only one person could eat a Devil Fruit and gain its power. That is, if Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu Fruit, and Shanks grabbed it and took a bite, only Luffy would get the power.

Apparently, that's either not true or there ARE multiple copies of certain Devil Fruits.

Also this chapter: a bit more about Haki is revealed--apparently, it lets people hurt DF users, predict movements, buff themselves, etc. This could be what Garp uses to beat Luffy down.

And it's possible that everyone can learn to use it. Food for thought?

Anyway, chapter discussion go!

Not related to the most recent chapters, but who of his former opponents would you have liked to join Luffy on his travels? In my opinion One Piece is the manga series with the most interesting characters EVER.

I would have liked to see Mr. 2 travel with them. One of the most entertaining and hilarious characters ever.

... I just remembered a fic I read a while back. It had something in it called 'Spirit', taught to Luffy by Dragon, which allowed a person to harm a devil's fruit user while negating the phase through ability of Logia users. Which noticabley the old man was able to do... :ph43r:

Also the Hebi Hebi mix means nothing. Zoans are notorious for the exception known as 'Models'. There's been three Inu Inu no Mi so far, Model Wolf, Jackel, and Dachshund. The falcon guy's fruit was also designated by this label, meaning there's more than one Bird based fruit. Most likely these models are Anaconda and Cobra going by what's seen in the battle. (Edit: The One Piece Wiki agrees).

This Haki thing would be cooler if I could see a difference. Particularly with Luffy's use. Seems to be mental however...

Same category, different model. One the king cobra and the other the anaconda, just like Pell ate the Tori Tori no Mi Model: Falcon.

Yeah, It seems like Haki is going to be the explanation for mysterious abilities like mantra and the fist of love. I'm not sure I'm happy about this as I liked the fact that they were unexplainable.

And on the subject of opponents joining the Strawhats, I choose Boa Hancock.

apparently Luffy has had that ability for a long while....I seem to recall him doing something similar back in Arlong Park I think...regarding Haki except without the fainting thing...

Oh yes. Mr. 2 could have been fun.

But really, we're forgetting that the Strawhats have left a Nakama behind, even if she wanted them to.

Remember ViVi? She could have been an interesting character to have along. She's somewhere between Nami and Robin on the One-Piece-Reaction-O-Meter, and could have acted as another (necessary) voice of reason.

Also, I kept thinking that Paulie from Galley-La would be joining the Straw Hats instead of Franky. Not that I'm dissapointed. Franky is a cool guy, he's a cyborg and isn't afraid of anything (meme subversion complete!). But Paulie has the coolest move ever: "Three Sheets To the Wind!"

For those of you not up on your pirate slang, "three sheets to the wind" is an expression meaning "very drunk".

Plus he uses rope for a weapon. Not practical, but certainly interesting. :sisi:

Vivi? Well, she didn't really have any special talents, and her hypnotizing 'power' was rather lame.

I don't know. That string slasher thing of hers was deadly when she really got down with it. Range, speed, accuracy, and quite a wide scope all in one.

So Haki = Mantra?

At least in the passive application shown by Marygold and Sandersonia. It seems safe to assume that the more aggressive Haki shown by Luffy is the same as the "Amazing vigor and drive" shown by Shanks when he met Whitebeard and whatever it was Raleigh's ability was on Shabondy. The possibly multiple kinds of haki, or at least stages in power, is interesting. I still hope he doesn't actually 'learn' to use it and just powers through like always. Having this special brand is much better in my opinion. It sets him apart, once more, and just fits the trend better. "King's disposition" is going along toward the idea that Luffy really is going to rule over the island of Kuja. Well at least be considered for the position(before he prompty declines, accepting a ride instead).

With him apparently going into Gear Second for the fight I'm sure it'll surprise the sisters and likely deal them a good blow, but will ultimately not be enough. I wouldn't mind him getting them out of the arena with the Jet moves, moving on to Gear Third(I like it, and all it's ridiculousness). Giant fist is gonna do sumthin'. I'd approve it more than the Haki, but I wouldn't want this fight(or the likely Boa Hancock fight) to be the set-up for Gear Fourth. Don't know what it would be, and I'm not to attached to another 'Gear' coming up, but...

I think the only thing I'm not liking about this current arc is Boa, too silly(I know, I know) but I'm hoping that she'll be given a deeper look( very possible).

I had thought Vivi would join them the first time around, but I didn't see what she could have offered to the group. Now I'm trying to figure out what other position Luffy's crew will need( and why Brook is another sword user.) but that isn't something to hold true to since a Historian, while cool, isn't what I associate with pirate crew. They have just about all the postitions...well, maybe a Priest? :snigger:

I'm of the mind that Luffy would kick the empress' ass and restore the stoned pirates (funny every time I think of it. Pass the weed man.). The pirates would join him and steal hancock's ship and set sail for shabondy. Hancock would feel insulted and decides to take the world government's offer to join just to get back at Luffy.

They should add a black guy (oops, sorry 'African American') to the crew to please the American readership :p

Forgot about this thread. Update, featuring Luffy utterly owning both of them, and then providing NICE GUY services to them afterwards. He may have converted another one. Silly idiot.

???

Okay, I'm confused. So Luffy beats down the Gorgon sisters, and starts doing his Nice Guy routine (eat your heart out Gai-sensei). Then everyone realizes that the Gorgon sisters backs are exposed, panic and run away.

...

WHY!?! DAMN YOU ODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Are you asking why they're running away?

If that's the case...
Oh nononono, I get that. Hmm... need to phrase this better.

What is it about the backs of the Gorgon sisters that makes them so desperate to hide them? My guess: horrific scarring. Boa's greatest pride is her beauty, and any imperfection like that would be a huge hit to her pride.

I'm of the notion that they were branded.

Very likely by the World Gov't and would explain her hate for it.

It's something that Luffy recognizes... if it was the World Gov'[t sign, he'd have recognized it right away, I mean.. he only burned it and saw it everywhere.

My guess? It's someone's Pirate Brand... not White Beard, that's something he saw on Ace's back, as such its something he would remember right away. My guess? Arlong Brand. Maybe. Cause I don;t think anyone else showed something that familiar... unless its say, the brand of Gold Roger.

As for possible additions to the crew... a merperson maybe? I can;t really think of any official position that isn't already filled, especially since Luffy has his beloved Musician.

Hmm... why does Luffy have a tatoo (or what looks like it) on his arm again? I don't quite recall that... :hmm:

Not a tattoo, but an armlet. Hopefully this isn't going to be of import...
