Perfect World

For those unfamiliar with Perfect World, it is this Chinese-Malaysian title with a Chinese-Fantasy theme. The format used to be subscription based but went free to play some time back, now coming to the US as free to play as well.

I'm only level 5 and barely qualified to review it, but it looks promising. Not the best i've seen, but not too damn bad for a free title. The depth of character customization is refreshing and the game isn't stingy with gear drops. Closed Beta starts on 9/20, but if you want to kick it around before then, you have to download the Malaysian-English client. It's not for the feint of heart, as the client is rife with bad grammar and NPC dialogue (I've been assured they're working on that for the US release). Likewise, the ping isn't likely to be spectacular either. For those who want to try out the US client when the servers go live, you can grab a beta key here (registration required). Don't get the Malay and US site mixed up. They are completely independent and your US login won't work on the Malay client.

Since I grabbed a key for myself, I'll try to keep this thread updated. On a side note, ROSE online has gone free to play as well. I betaed that a few years back but wasn't impressed enough to pay once they went live. Free however, may be just the right price.

Tried it, liked it, gave up after the fourth day. The game's grind is long if you can't find the quest locations you need to find to level up.

Guilds aren't anything special, no bonuses are given outside of the ability to go into PvP combat while at a low level IF the guild you're a part of has saved over a few billion in Gold.

No ways to power level either. I was fighting Monsters 60 levels above me along side a pack of guildmates, and I was getting something like 5 XP per kill for solo kills (running around like a fool with a healer at the ready when he wasn't laughing at me), when fighting monsters just 3 levels above me were giving me much more XP.

Graphically, its beautiful. Gameplay is solid. Communication interface and chat systems not fully done nor will they be. Grind... tortuous even to me.

Oh, and the one feature that drew me in is the ability to build your own house, that feature isn't in the game yet, and if it is, it will cost more then getting a guild into full PvP and Territorial wars.

Hm... I'll give it a shot when the English servers open up. Maybe we can get enough TFFers on to group and do whatever it is groups do in this game.

All you do in groups is do some quest dungeons together and fight together to mass collect monster items.

Like, um... most other MMOs? And I gotta question the relevancy of power leveling too, but maybe that's just me. I hear they're complete redoing NPC dialogue at any rate, so maybe that includes the chat system in the US version. Maybe not. <shrug>

That, and I hope they ditch those gay smilies. And that fruity ass theme song as well.

I already have a key and will be giving it a try when it comes out. When it starts up it'll post my character name here in case anyone is interested in grouping up or the like.
