Peter's was losing his uncle and the whole 'with great power comes great responsibility' quote.

why would MJ care?

Harry would be interesting if he didn't use his powers till his dad goes psycho and see's what power does to people.

massive necro, but i am adding to the conversation.

on the point of MJ, she wouldn't have the uncle ben suggestion, and doesn't have the best sort of home life ,therefore she may start off using her powers for selfish and shortsighted gain.
Peter may very well have to lay the smack-down on her if she has gotten out of control, and since she'd be the embodiment of the spider totem i'd think she would fall into his jurisdiction, it would make sense.

add in some training and possibly a sexy new costume that's magically reinforced.....BAM! sexy little spider-girl......who's a red head.

what i want to know is how close to doctor strange's magic style would peter be?
strange is heavily aligned with order and several deities, add on his magical artifacts and a hell of a lot of experience, peter wouldn't have all this.
I assume he'd possible build up pacts and such but it would be slow going and i doubt he'd be 'OMG WTF HAXX!' any time soon, in the grand scheme of things, but i'm sure things could be interesting.....if you add in a serious affliction that causes clothes to disappear whenever peter sneezes or something i'd endorse it.

On the subject of alternate Spider's, the idea of Gwen Stacy as Ultimate Spidergirl sounds interesting. Her father is a cop, and I can see her wanting to help and protect him. If he still gets killed, though (especially if the killer is wearing her costume, or a variant, thereof), its really going to mess her up.

Going to off on a slight tangent here but you know how Peter mixes it up with the X-men(people for PC), well Wanda Maximoff is a magic user so she could be part of this, as a love interest or apprentice or adversary,(woo look at that, my alliteration is awesome today).
