Problem with inserting smilies mid-post?

I am not sure if any of you have experienced similar problems to mine, or if there is simply a feature that I missed, but I find that after having finished typing a post, I cannot go back to somewhere in the middle and insert any quotations or smilies if I suddenly so desire. Instead, any such attempt will result in the smilie appearing at the end of the post.

The only way I know of to circumvent this is to keep cutting and pasting, though it gets cumbersome and annoying at times.

So, is this a bug, a feature, or a prelude to something far more sinister? :unsure!:

It happens to me too. Blame Invisionfree's phpBB - it seems to be outdated.

Uh... to my knowledge, it's always been like that...

I'm not sure if the board has the function and it's turned off, or if it simply lacks it, but considering we never had it to begin it, I don't think it's a bug or anything of the sort. ^^;;

This is the first and foremost reason why I hate invision - the second one being the lack of a search function.

Ever tried to format a lot of stuff with bold and italic text on IV boards? you mark the text with the mouse, press alt-b, and instead of the bold tag appearing left and right of the highlighted text, it appears at the bottom.

Stupid, sucky crap, this function is.

Also, I noticed that the hotkeys for activating the quotation/bold etc features are not working for me, though I gather that this problem seems limited to me alone. Nothing happens when I try hitting alt + relevant letter. Could it be something to do with my browser (firefox?). More than a little inconvenient, I must say... :(

Bah... emoticons don't even register as an issue to me, since I use them so infrequently and try to ignore them when I see them. However, I have noticed the following:

1. Missed a search.

2. Despise that the forum tends to crash upon me making a post, thus even if hit back button, it is lost.

3. Noticied an odd bug on the tagging, if you make a post and insert tags (quote, spoiler, bold, etc...) it seems to work. But if you paste into the edit box text with the tags, it does not always pick it up, even if it was copied from an edit bozx with the tags put in from it. It also does not accept straight HTML, or at least *my* straight HTML, which I've tried.

That last is insidious, as it is one of the items preventing me from bothering to change my display of favorites links. And since this is the *only* board I've recieved misgivings on my format... oh well.

I used to have a board with phpBB, too - and it DIDN'T do this shit. It's Invision's phpBB that does it specifically - either it's outdated or it's buggy.

Funny, I've never had an ounce of trouble with this, but I think that's because I write out all the UBB code manually.

I do, too, usually, but when you're trying to format chapter-length posts it becomes really, really tiring and tedious (if you tend to do lots of italics and bolds like I do x.x)

Or it could be a browser problem, as I've never suffered from this issue. I can go back and change over whatever I've written, add smiles to it and whatever without a problem.

Though *Hawk?still being a IE6,0 user means that I have plenty of other issues when cruising the www, but whatever... :)

It's using IE6, versus any other browser... at least for me. IE6 doesn't support some of the web standards properly, so I imagine Invision bodged together a fix... that broke it for everyone using a different browser.

This issue happens for me on both Invision and phpBB based forums, but only in Firefox, Opera etc. It works fine in IE. Which I refuse to use...

I have *always* had the opposite problem. I've found, if some java or html is going to break, it is Firefox that it will do it for. I also hate that interface with a passion and consider it clunky and slow.

I use Firefox mainly for either going to pages that were written for it and have issues under IE, or for making corrections to working code to get it to work under FireFox.

I consider it worthy as a emergency backup browser only.

as for the post emoticons and quote tags going to the bottom of the post that is an issue with Firefox and not the forum.

either type them in or use IE... lol

I don't know about the other issue with hotkeys though.

Interesting.

I know that Firefox loads more slowly (at least on first opening it after Windows has loaded) than IE, but then, IE is so deeply integrated into every version of Windows post 98, that it loads 90% of it at boot anyway.

But still, it has to be taken into consideration that by far the most 'popular' browser is IE - either because it is used by people who have little computer knowledge because 'it comes with the system' or because businesses wish to stick to MS products for whatever reason. And by popular, I meant that IE has something over 80% of the browser 'market' even now.

Generally I find that sites that rigidly adhere to the W3 specifications work perfectly under Firefox... and can but do not always... work perfectly under IE. The coding screwups necessary to fix various problems with the way IE handles Javascript or CSS are pretty well known, and so most sites tend to use them if they're expecting high volumes of IE-based traffic. Unfortunately, that can cause problems for other browsers that do actually follow the W3 specs - like Firefox and Opera.

It's a bit worrying when something has such market dominance, and the coders are so arrogant that they won't fix problems - they make everyone else code around it.

As for interface... it's all personal taste. ;)

Hmm...perhaps Firefox is the reason why so many of the options are not available to me. But then the reason why I switched to firefox in the first place was because I was sick of spyware continuously invading my comp (seriously: I merely used IE for 5 minutes yesterday - it being the only megaupload toolbar compatible browser, and AVG picked up 2 trojan horses almost immendiately). Which might not have been a bad thing, depending on how you looked at it. It had been so quiet that I was wondering if it was actually working or not... -_-

These problems do not seem to arise when I use Firefox, so I guess I shall stick with it for the moment, and suck up the good with the bad... :D

I actualy have IE7 on my PC - stupid Windows Updater dled it - and it's SLOWER than Firefox for me. Also, they completely messed up the layout of the commands - the new one is utterly confusing for someone used to the old one like me.

In short, it sucks a nut. I'm only keeping it because some programs require it.

I have never tried IE7, but IE6 is a giant steaming pile of horseshit. My computer got SO fucked up in normal use of IE6 that it required a complete Windows reinstall. Luckily I don't keep any files of importance on the computer itself.

Frankly, as I already use FireFox and OpenOffice, and don't play any modern games, I am considering dropping Windows entirely for my next computer, and going with some kind of Linux.

Of all the ones I've seen Linspire impressed me the most.

From what I've been told if you're a non-gamer Apple computers are good because they are not affected by as many spyware and virus programs compared to windows.

Not sure how it's capabilities stack up to Windows or Linux though.

Apple computers are better than Windows when it comes to viruses, true. However, they are not 'immune' as Apple would have people believe... especially now that Macs are gaining more in the public eye. The current Apple viruses are little more than 'proof of concept'... but I don't think it'll take long before they start getting nasty. Nor are Macs 'crash proof'. I've had more hard locks with OSX than I have with XP. That little spinning rainbow wheel might be pretty, but I hate it because it means the thing is having heart failure in the background.

I don't consider security through obscurity to be true security, and in any case I refuse to buy anything made by Apple.

Indeed! "I haven't gotten around to violating you yet, muffin" is far from the same meaning as "You're safe, sweet-pea." :sweat2:

I quite agree. :sisi:
