So if you want to buy anything from either store, you only have a few days left to grab something (re-downloads of previous purchases should still be available for some time to come)

As a natural development from this, online support for these will be terminated April 2024.
Essentially, after Nintendo cuts support in April of next year, you'll no longer be able to access the internet on the 3DS and Wii U. That means online rankings, online cooperative play and any other features that require an internet connection will no longer be supported.

... [C]ooperative play isn't totally off the table; users will still be able to play games together locally, which means both consoles are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Updates and previously downloaded games will also still be available to access through the Nintendo eShop for the "foreseeable future," according to the company.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll have to play Xenoblade X before servers close

Wait, you need online support to play that game?

Not to my knowledge.
Far as I know the online support for that game was already pulled a long time ago.

It's not required, but there is some extra content that is online-only, including some co-ops raids and I believe two exclusive bosses, and one Skell is exclusive to playing enough online as well.

Update with more specific numbers.
... In an updated statement released on Wednesday, Nintendo has fine-tuned the timetable. Within Japan, 3DS and Wii U online service is scheduled to conclude on April 9 at 9 a.m., and the shutdown will occur simultaneously, at 4 p.m. on April 8, within North America.

The silver, or at least silvery, lining is that the 3DS’s StreetPass functionality will continue even after April 8/9, due to operating via local connection between 3DS units themselves. All other forms of online multiplayer play, though, including SpotPass, are going away.
