Ranma ½ Ranma 1/2 Remastered

It comes in Manga, DVD, and Blu-ray flavors.

I just got the Blu-Ray and manga in the mail. I only have the first volumes of both at the moment but see no reason I won't continue to pick this up as it's released. Something I've not done in decades, so it's nostalgic in more than one sense.

There is a noticeable difference in quality here. Sound is much improved and the animation is cleaner with better colors. It also has the sub and dub. I don't have a VCR anymore and long since got rid of my tapes of the early episodes so I really can't say if the subs are a new translation or not. I do have a few DVDs I picked up near the end of the series and the quality difference is very easy to see, it was made with the original masters and it shows. The first set has the first 23 episodes of the Anime and I've only watched a few so far, but it's been fun.

The Manga is also 'remastered'. It's a new translation and the first time the manga has been released in left to right format. The differences are minor and most of the dialogue hasn't changed from what I've seen. Akane says "Any shmuck can go to China," as opposed to "What's so great about going to China?" in the opening scene for example, but that is the only line that was changed in the scene.

The art also looks cleaner, but not changed. Printing technology has improved and the quality of the paper is better. Plus the left to right format makes art errors and low detail near the binding border less obvious.

Anyway, either one is worth it for fans. I highly recommend checking the remasters out.

Hmmm...

Have to wonder if they are going to keep the original book chapter breaks, or use the ones in the 2nd U.S. printing...

I always thought the DVD's decent quality. In fact, for most of the stuff I buy that is older material, I actually prefer the cheaper DVD's to Bluray.

Not sure want to spend the money to get Ranma anime a 3rd time. Though in fairness I only had I think about 1/3 of it on VHS before rebuying as DVD's.

Maybe I'd get the anime once they re-release about the first 1/2. then I can have it in a fairly consistent format.

I got up to season 3 or 4 on dvd before I stopped buying the sets. I just got too expensive, not to mention the anime just couldn't hold my interest past that.

The manga re-release might be interesting, if they release it in the big omnibus collections. I picked up the Rurouni Kenshin omnibus series like that, despite already buying the individual volumes years before. (It helped that I had lost several volumes while moving and needed to replace them.)

The manga has 2 tankobon volumes per volume for the remaster. So it'll work out to about 18 volumes total.

So the first volume is a reprint of tankobon 1 and 2, and the second 3 and 4, etc.

It's not a bad deal for the price, and the Anime isn't horribly overpriced either for a new release that's been remastered. 23 eps for around $60 isn't bad in regard to Anime.

considering I saw the remastered sets at Wal-Mart for 19 bucks for 23 eps I almost picked it up but I remembered it's the one Ocean Group dub that I found painful to watch

I don't think I've ever watched an anime where i preferred the dub to the sub. I don't even care that I don't understand what theyre saying and have to read it, I just like the voices a lot better.

Left-to-right? That means it's flipped. The US releases have always been flipped. The fanscans have always been flipped.

Are you sure you don't mean it's right-to-left?

Anyway, sad to say, I would have cared more three years ago. Now? I'm finding it difficult to care much.

Well, they are right-to-left. I saw the first three two-volume books in a bookstore the other day.

Not sure if it's a new translation though; or at least I didn't read enough to confirm/deny that. I just picked up the first book and read the first couple pages.
