Top? That's quite a tall order, the fandom is both diverse and divided...

IMO, if there is one man deserving top spot, it's got to be Black Dragon - by virtue of having most yeas and least nays. He specializes in black humor / action, his Ranma is a badass, quite OoC, but the stories are so packed one tends to ignore it.

I linked whats pretty much the original ranma fanfiction archive from the mid 90s til ffnet became overwhelmingly popular a few posts above. A lot of the multichapter fics there are worth reading.

The fact you actually read the manga means that you'll probably get these stories a lot more then most of the newer ones, because as a series that has had fanfiction written for it for about 20 years, the fanon is rather strong in it. Most of the newer writers (and by newer, I mean like the last 5-10 years worth) haven't actually read the series, much less seen more then a season or two of the anime, so they learn their characterizations from fanon as well, distorting all sorts of characters into being things they simply arent.

Ranma just has too many fanfics written over too many years to say 'the best'. Especially when you realize that for a long time Ranma was EVERYONES favorite crossover character.

I'd warn you to be careful. There are a lot of disturbing and creepy fics out there. There are some writers that inflict horrid and disgusting humiliations on Ranma that I doubt they would have the guts to write a 'real' female character suffering trough. The amount of rape, mind break, mind control and torture fics out there is really kind of scary.

Heh... you asked... you self recommend yourself for a specific story, I find no fault in that despite what you may think... but that would not be the story of yours I would have picked... it would have been your Ranma/Negima or the Ranma/Sailor Moon stories (I follow your Raised in Roanapour one as well, but that is not a Ranma story). Meh... no matter.

Well the Negima is dead in the water and likely to get shipped into my cemetary soon, and the Sailor Moon one... every time I want to continue it, I reread the last chapter to recall where I left off and keep getting bogged down by the various errors I see (real or imagined). But the one I recced I already have the next chapter in progress for.

get a beta (or I guess just editor in this case) to edit it for you and send you a fixed version, whether it be a thematic or grammatical sweep for errors.

Don't try to fix that shit yourself if everytime you look at it you get stuck, get a fresh pair of eyes to clean it for ya.

Hmm. I suppose. Mostly it's just that I can see all the bad characterizations and cliches I hit with it after I had some time to separate myself from the writing of it. I'm not sure how much help a beta would be in this case, but I guess I could give it a try.

@PCHeintz: I might have a few snippets and scene bits lying around on my hard drive for the Negima story , and I'll probably through them together into something resembling a chapter at some point, so there's that.

So I just finished reading Ranma for the first time and since it's so popular, I wanted to know which are top fics of the fandom. What have you got for me?
--'{@

Since you've read the source,
Here's some oldies but goodies.
Some are unfinished.

  • Another Approach
  • By Jack Staik
  • - http://archives.eyrie.org/anime/Ranma/The-Bet/ranma.the-bet.another-approach.gz
Just what does "unite the schools" really mean, anyway?
A Bet entry that has been taken over by Mr. Staik.
  • - Hilarious approach to completely reversing several conventions about the Ranma 1/2 source material. (e.g. Ranma "lamenting" the fact that Akane is not a tomboy. Akane getting pissed off when she's called cute. Akane engineering situations where Ranma would appear as raging deviant pervert but ends up being lectured for inappropriate behavior. Kuno and the Hentai Horde have Ranma's blessing for Akane's Anything Goes Martial Arts training.) Familiarity with canon makes this story funny as hell. Shame it's unfinished.

  • Education
  • By Donny Cheng
  • - http://members.shaw.ca/chengdo/Educate.txt
Ranma learns about the facts of life... finally.
Placed second in the July, 1998 short story voting at the Annual and Montly Best of Ranma Fanfic Awards.
  • - One of the older takes on Ranma being naive about his body and finally learning about Sex Ed. Hilarity ensues. A lot of Donny Cheng's stuff is pretty good. Though the crossover stories have not weathered the test of time since a lot of the concepts have been reused in many other derivative works. The pure Ranma stuff are still WAFFy and/or funny though.

Outtakes from Those Who Hunt Ninjas. Really just an excuse to associate more silliness to an already silly fic. Definitely not a sequal in any way, shape or form Thankfully

Shampoo 12
By: DB Sommer
It's the beginning of my megalithic alternate universe series as Ranma arrives at the Tendou dojo with an unusual companion this time around.
Rated: Fiction M - English - Ranma, Shampoo - Chapters: 48 - Words: 879,020 - Reviews: 140 - Favs: 221 - Follows: 58 - Updated: Feb 24, 2011 - Published: Dec 31, 2000 - Status: Complete - id: 158392

All three are worth reading at least once, and shampoo 1/2 while long does keep you interested with some plot twists and slapstick that most don't come up with.

Most of the male cast ends up in RWBY.

A Child Genius
Ryoga's success with age-mushrooms kind of snowballs into a mess. Don't worry Negi, the school nurse is just a year-or-so older than you. Physically, anyway.
Rated: Fiction T - English - Humor - Ranma - Words: 14,770 - Reviews: 47 - Favs: 229 - Follows: 91 - Published: Aug 8 - Status: Complete - id: 11434313

It's a cross with Negima, also a oneshot. And while it says "nurse" Saotome-sensei is male.

Sort of, and publicly. The curse is very much so still there, though, and Ranma has kind of a fuck-it mentality as regards to it. There's a rather funny scene where he isn't, well, a he, and one of Negima's clothes-killer scenes happens. Not Negi's fault, believe it or not.

Ah the Stripper Beam, some wonder whether or not this is preferable to actual lasers.

Then he pretty much destroyed EVERYTHING via generous application of tornadoes EVERYWHERE.

My favorite part is the end tough. Only Ranma would pull a Genma on himself.

I read this yesterday. I ... well, to be honest, I don't have any strong feelings about it at all. The writing is more than minimally decent; at times it's funny and snappy and never unreasonable. The base premise annoys me, but that's all it does, or did -- annoys. The feeling passed quickly and was not strong to begin with because it's been so long since I cared deeply about this fandom. I can't even really care about the crossover because the insertion is not mishandled in any way, really..

I don't know if I'd read it a second time, but it entertained me for the time it took to read.

I remember reading it, too.

It felt like it was an outline with some segments of dialogue added in to prove that the fic could work.

That's how I feel towards Racke's writing in general. At times I wish to strangle him for getting characters so wrong, yet usually there's some aspect that he just gets that fandom at large doesn't. In that fic it would be Ranma's relationship with Genma that's handled superbly.

He's like cheap Chinese version of Ozzallos, writing fics that would be lot more intriguing without their personal fetish shoved on your face 24/7.
