Re-Mastered

I've been watching some of the Star-Trek: Remastered series here for the last year, and have come to the conclusion that the idea is interesting, but pretty hit or miss. Some things look good on the shows, and then some of the FX look very much like CGI, rather than what the original stuff that they seemed to want in the 60's.

What I wonder is, what do you think of remastered FX of images that seem to be coming out some. Of course Lucas did it in the original trilogy, with some intersting, some ham-fisted(Greedo shoots first. Greedo shoots first!) Spielberg did it with ET, with showing the G-men with radios intead of the guns that they had in the originals. Do you think things like re-imagining is a good thing, or is it better to leave things alone, or just re-make the whole film. Personally, after I put my original trilogy on dvd, that I got on laserdisc before, I watched the first remastered in theatres, and felt that it wasn't really needed, so the Death-Star blew up with a new 'plosion?

So what, I like effects, but it's story that draws me in, which is why I picked up the Forbidden Planet disc this weekend. Just wanted to get some opinions from folks.

I think that once a film is in the can and released, it should be left as is for home versions. The exception is if there are noticeable defects: color bleed, color fade, scratches, frame skips, etc.

The other exception is to add footage back in, if it was cut for theatrical release. An example: the theatrical release of Terminator 2 was noticeably shorter and the footage added back in for Special Edition tape/DVD really enhanced the story greatly.

Yeah, I remember when CETK Special edition came out, with the extra time in the spaceship, but then they had Ridley Scott's director's cut of Blade Runner, which I actually liked less than the theatrical version. Then there was the "director's cut of ST:TMP that came out a few years ago, and that was interesting, but I still grew up watching the original, and still prefer that overall.

sometimes visual clarity isn't a good thing as seen in the remastered Beastmaster, i prefered her as a brunnette.

Re-imagining and re-mastering in and of themselves aren't good or bad, but some examples of them suck (such as having Greedo shoot first, and miss by a ridiculous degree), while others are OK, or even better than the original.

The re-mastered Star Trek has been mostly OK to good, IMHO.
