Reccomended Game Fanfiction

Been reading some Doki Doki Literature Club stuff lately

Stand-In

Finding yourself trapped within the world of a game is already a bad situation. But finding yourself trapped within the actual program is potentially even worse.

Something made particularly apparent when, by all appearances, you belong there.
A self-proclaimed Monica SI. Still on-going, and just updated a week ago. I enjoyed what there was. It gets really meta in parts, but that's kind of par for the course for DDLC. I highly recommend reading it on AO3, which I linked to, over the FFN version. It goes into Ren'py commands at times, but of course FFN formatting turns it to trash. Do recommend.

The Awakening of Monika

Completed. This was at the top of the TVtropes fic recs...and it shouldn't be. I guess maybe there's some literary value in there, but as an actual story, it sucks. It tries to jump around character PoVs and rehash the same events to give it substance, but there's really just no depth to it. What's worse is the second half of the story just takes a complete jump off into a nonsensical nuttery of a plot. Do not recommend.

Shadow Within the Code

Someone from reality is inserted into the game by a mysterious organization to act as the club advisor for the infamous Literature Club. His mission: save the girls and break the chain of events surrounding the tragedy of the game. Rated M for references to self-harm, suicidal thoughts and other sensitive topics.
Completed. A 'somebody from reality gets inserted into the DDLC world' where the person has knowledge of the events of DDLC. It was passable and readable, but it's really nothing special. Do not recommend.

Where Talent Goes to Die

By: Theralion
At a school like Hope's Peak, an all too familiar killing game begins once more, another echo of the tragedy that drove the world insane. How many promising young lives will it claim? Who is responsible? And is the re-occurrence of this tragedy a coincidence, or the result of someone's plan?
Rated: Fiction M - English - Mystery/Drama - Chapters: 30 - Words: 320,452 - Reviews: 23 - Favs: 21 - Follows: 16 - Updated: Mar 1, 2019 - Published: Feb 7, 2018 - Status: Complete - id: 12828432
The premise is a riff on the first Danganronpa game, taking place in a 'knock-off' high school that's less prestigious than Hope's Peak Academy, where the quality of its Talents is a little more generic and less prestigious (the main character's talent is 'the Ultimate Beginner's Luck'), and has a little bit of pay-to-enter status for its more middling students. Still, it's also well-written, and certainly a lot better so than most of the formulaic Danganronpa stories that like to use the same '16 students with X talent in a Killing Game' set-up. It also does have a TVtropes page

I'm going to add that to my reading list .. it looks like a HUGE story (320k+ words?!?!!) . Which makes the low number of reviews odd. Perhaps the grammar is bad?

Blessed by the Crystal by: Kaleidoscope89 reviews
With the starscourge eliminated, the King of Light and Oracle have fulfilled their duties. As they lay to rest, another crystal has sought to bless the two once more. A new adventure awaits them both, reborn into a new realm.

Fic's probably dead, but I think it's a pretty interesting idea. Even if they made Noctis and Luna ‎Miqo'te for some reason (Possible nod to an outfit FFXV got from the crossover?).

It was reasonably good, though nothing outright stellar. I think it's just the nature of a lot of fandoms today, where people seem to be less and less likely to leave reviews. If you sort by number of reviews on FFN for Danganronpa, the 1st percentile by reviews tapers out at 180 reviews, so #51 out of about 4700 fics has less than 180 reviews.

This sucked me in. There are parts to it that I did not like - incorrect religious explanations in particular - but it had good writing and was fun. Thanks for the suggestion.

You are welcome!

There is a sequel fic, too. Where Talent Goes on Vacation. I haven't read it yet. Maybe on my next stretch of nights.

Danganronpa

Extra Life

Izuru knew he couldn't let her die, not like this, not while he had the power to save her. Chiaki survives her execution—but the fate of the world is still sealed. The road to recovery is a hard one, and a reunion is far off.
TVtropes page

The basic plot premise is that after human Chiaki's execution in the events of the Danganronpa 3 animation, Izuru saves her life with some quick, extreme surgery work, with his Ultimate Luck talent likely helping her to receive injuries that weren't instantly fatal. After she awakens, Izuru helps her to slowly undergo rehab.

However, the events of the Ultimate Despair triggering the biggest, most awful, most tragic event in human history still goes on, with Izuru continuing to sit back in his observer role. Chiaki continues her rehab, and tries to get Izuru to break out of his social shell caused by the surgery that transformed him. The events of Danganronpa 1 go on in the background over the course of a year and change. Danganronpa 2 then starts to occur, at which point Chiaki goes her own way to try doing what she can with the Future Foundation.

It's definitely an impressive story. And it's very much cathartic considering real Chiaki's fate. As the author notes put it:

My brain: Hey, you know what’d be a good idea?
Me: No.
My brain: Starting a multi-chapter fic to fix Chiaki’s death while you have other fics going :) :) :)
Me: Nooooooooooo let’s do it she deserves it.

Alola, Galar!

Author seems to have disappeared from Spacebattles regrettably but I do think this is a really interesting idea. Elios/Sun travelling Galar creates some interesting culture shock, and him teaching Gloria gives the story a plotline that the initial game was sorely lacking.

Don't really care for the EliosxNessa shipping though.

Anybody know any similar fics?

L'appel du Vide is a fun Dishonored/Persona cross. It's basically the Persona 5 game setting with no OC's.
This story follows the Persona 5 protagonist (Amamiya Ren) as he's visited by the Outsider right before he gets arrested before the events of the main game start.
It's a bit angsty at times and Ren is slightly Sue-ish but it's a fun read.

I'd say it's alright, but everything just seems to go way too fast, there's a little build-up to anything, and the girls just kinda feel like they're there to crush on Ren.

It's got interesting ideas, but it just doesn't seem interested in fleshing them out.

Published: 2021-10-10 Words: 7780
In the months after Vermillion Wasteland, Emilie logs on, lives her life, and waits for her friends to return to CrossWorlds.
A nice character piece one-shot. But it definitely does spoil the end of the main game, so don't read if you're playing through it.

Senran Persona: Ninjas of Hearts By: UknownHero

91 chapters with 1,585,495 words and Futaba still isn't awake. I've definitely been enjoying it, but I do agree with Ryuji in that Tokoyo got weird when Asuka and Homura showed up.

Persona Restart

By: thattherfella
After facing a total defeat at the hands of Yaldabaoth, all of the Phantom Thieves save Ren have been killed. And he is about to be until he gets a chance at a restart. Can Ren prevent his friends, and the world, from suffering the same fate? Or will Yaldabaoth prove too strong once again in the end? Rated T for violence, language

Rated: Fiction T - English - Adventure/Friendship - Morgana, Ann T., Ryuji S., Akira K./Ren A./The Trickster/Joker - Chapters: 15 - Words: 60,826
It's not great, and doesn't dovetail hard from canon, but it's at least competently written with no red flags. Ren tries to go it alone (well, with Morgana as well) in his second go-around, but fails. Thus far, the party consists of Ren, Morgana, Shiho, Mishima, and Futaba < highlight for spoilers

Persona 5, Persona Series

Summary:
A online group chat starts to form around the girls in Akira's life. As each one grows to realise that they are falling in love with our protagonist, it becomes rapidly apparent that they aren't fully in control of themselves or their emotions. The chat becomes a lifeline that helps our heroines to ground and validate each other, keeping reality in check even as a supernatural force controls their emotions and actions.

Author Notes:
Originally, I wrote this as a light-hearted exploration of how it might feel to be a romanceable character in someone else's story. It was intended to be mostly jokes and conversations poking fun at the lack of agency that an NPC might get.
It grew a bit beyond that scope once I started writing and became more of a drama/character study. I haven't shared my writing online before, you don't HAVE to be nice, but...y'know :p

Hah!

If you don't like character studies, you're not gonna like it, but if you do, you'll find it pretty interesting.

Incomplete, last updated in 2019, so don't get your hopes up. Fun for what it was, though.

Masquerade, a Persona 5 Royal fic

An appointment is made.

An appointment is missed.

A girl attends Shujin Academy, grieving and broken and alone.

Akira Kurusu has a talent for helping lost causes find their footing, but even the leader of the Phantom Thieves has his work cut out for him this time. How do you help someone who doesn't think they're worth helping?
Since the summary is vague af, a fic where Joker discovers Sumire early, finds out she has a Palace, and the Phantom Thieves intervene to help 'Sumi a lot earlier in the year. It is also a complete fic.

The Legend Of Zelda: God Bless This Wonderful Hero

When Link died, he died content. He had taken down the Calamity, saved the princess, and set about a time of peace for the entirety of Hyrule. It was only a shame he couldn't stay to enjoy it with Zelda, having passed at the very end of it all. But he didn't expect a goddess to nick his soul so he could save another world, nor had he expected it to backfire on her completely.
An amusing Zelda/Konosuba crossover that inserts Link into Kazuma's role. Yes, Link talks.

Something a little bit different. Instead of written fanfiction, a Touhou fancomic strip, of about 400 coloured 4komas

Hang in there Kogasa-chan! by yuzuna99

Danbooru has translation notes for every one of the 4koma, so it's easy to follow along. The series is incredibly light-hearted, and incredibly cute, meeting basically every Touhou character in the cast from game 6 to game 13 (Double Dealing Character) at least once, along with some comic characters.
