Recommended Nanoha Fics

So, I'm sure some of you must have read it already, but I will recommend "The Bitter End" anyway because it's just that good. Here's the link because I don't know how to hyperlink: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9731528/1/The-Bitter-End.

Basically, to put in the most non-spoilery way possible, it's a fic that explore the relationship between Nanoha and her loved ones in a world that's more or less canon (events happen as in canon, but the underlying worldbuilding is presume to be different), and the costs of pushing oneself beyond one's limits too many times. It's written by Immatrael, who's better known on Spacebattles as Aleph, the author of the Games series, so even if you don't like her other fics, you can be sure that this one would be technically well written at the very least. A little bit of warning though, as the fic is quite sad, as can be easily intuited from the title alone.

The title is misleading. Nanoha died doing what she loved, and it wasn't a particularly bad death, either. It was peaceful. I could see if she died in battle or on her lonesome, away from everyone she knew, but she died with her friends and family all around her, and was satisfied with her life.

For one, I'm fairly certain Nanoha didn't die. The Ace of Ace did, but not Takamachi Nanoha. For what it's worth, I also objected to the title in the original thread posted on SB but no reply from Aleph so far. Although I suppose there's no strict rule that titles cannot be ambiguous, so that's the author's decision, really.

I think that the bitter end here refers to the fact that after all the fighting, after all that, Nanoha can't truly enjoy the one thing she loved most in the world: Flying. Without magic, she can't truly fly, only relying on others, but it just won't be the same.

Or it could be that bitter end refers to the "she fight till the bitter end" phrase. Even without her magic, even without her powers, Nanoha still find a way to fight on, not in body but in spirit.

Since we're going to analyse the title, I think "the bitter end" here refers not to Nanoha's feelings on her inevitable death, but the feelings of her loved ones towards it. Vivio wanted to give the extra fifty years she has to her mother, and constantly blamed the Blaster system (and herself), Fate, despite keeping her composure, seriously didn't know of a life without Nanoha. In a way, everyone was angry that Nanoha was dying, yet they can do nothing about it. Nanoha had to reassure them that although it was inevitable, she had lived a content life, and her dying a (relatively) peaceful death with her loved ones was better than being shot down in some battlefield away from them. She also wishes that everything be fine after she's gone, that none of them would end up ruining their lives because of grief.

Lol. That's one of Nanya's fics. As for how she got there... well, his other Fate/stay night fic, which has some Nanoha crossed over into it, gives a good reasoning as to how Reinforce would enter the Throne of Heroes.

"...That name doesn't help me much. However, that does beg this question, if you knew her in life, how is she a Heroic Spirit? They typically need to be worshiped heavily, such as Herakles, to ascend to the Throne of Heroes." Rider tried not to grimace, she wasn't someone who deserved to be at the Throne of Heroes or summoned by the Grail at all.

"Well, let's just say that she's well known to other planets." Yuuno smiled at Rider. "Not in a good way, sadly, but she chose to let herself die rather than put her previous master and family in danger." It was almost two minutes later when Yuuno realized that Rider wasn't beside him. Turning around, he blinked as he saw her looking at him blankly. "...Rider?"

I'm gonna have to give the "Gamesverse" a firm de-rec. Supposedly the premise is "what if Precia was nice to Fate to get her cooperation?" but the driving force is actually Nanoha being OOC narly all the conflict results from Nanoha's most important trait, trying to communicate with others, being removed for no reason, and her overall maturity is severely dropped. There are other big problems with the fic, but that's the biggest.

I do have praise for its interesting worldbuilding, and character building for what were in canon background characters, but other than that the Gamesverse is passable at best.
