What's recommended reading on writing (good) fanfiction?
(Besides the specific resources and the original source material of whatever fandom.)
Specifically on writing the story. (Plot, 1st - n-th person, character growth, action scenes, 'can't stop reading' element, etc.)
So if you got some recommended reading on writing original stories, that would also be appreciated.

What's the difference between writing original and fan fiction?
(My guess would be on techniques and methods for character and world building within a story.
With the original part having to due most of the work yourself. And the fan part being interpretation of 'canon' and having it fit or change in your story. And if you're doing a crossover explaining on how it works (and what it is). Am I correct, wrong or missing stuff?)

I do request a small summary of whatever you're recommending if its not apparent from the title.
If its a book, title & author please.
If its on the internet, link please?

http://hobgoblin.net/ was my primary resource for plotting and characterization advice, at least until its layout changed from a coherent list of links into a snazzy and confusing piece of web technology. The Resource Links are still incredibly useful, for whatever the hell you may need to research for a story.

Seriously, just look at this list:

Character Building (28)
Charater Profiles and Charts, Name Resources

á Community (36)
Advice for Writers, Conventions and Conferences, Famous Authors, Organizations, Publications, Writer's Pages

á Get Published (47)
Agents, Contests, Copyright and Legal Issues, e-publishers and Print on Demand, Publishing Houses, Rejection...

Inspiration (38)
Art, Creativity, Games and Entertainment, Music, Film and Television, On-line Literature and Poetry, Quotations

á Market Guides (11)

á Research and Reference (192)
Arms, Armor and Combat, Castles, Costume and Fashion, Flora and Fauna, Food, Drink and Brewing, Gems, Jewelry and Precious Metals...

Towards Better Writing (65)
Critiquing, Dialogue, Grammar and Style, Plot, Structure and Pacing, Point of View, Workshops...

á World Building (17)
Generators, Language, Questionairs and Guidelines

There are 434 Links in our Database

I can't guarantee that all the links still work, though. They're also somewhat more sympathetic to fanfiction writing than most 'serious' writer's resource sites; understanding that in many ways there's more enjoyment to be derived from such exploration of possibilities than just straight original fiction.

Here is something I posted a while back. Yes, it is mainly focused on British TV shows, but some of the principles are the same.

Not worksafe, but you shouldn't be writing or reading fanfics at work anyway!
