Reputation

So in the process of moving to this shiny new land you've established here, and jiggering with all my settings to get the clocks to work and signatures to show and such not, I noticed the reputation thing.

A number? A number that tells me how good I am, that I can work at and make it go up?

Oh no, this seems to be dangerous territory indeed. As a former WoW addict, the danger of numbers that go up are well known to me. Could we perhaps institute some limits on Reputation? Such as, say, you can't give out Reputation for the first month of your registration, you can't give out more than one vote for such-and-such time period, etc?

I realize that Reputation is meaningless ego-stroking, but meaningless ego-stroking seems to be the point of most things on the internet, so we might as well stroke properly, firmly, with a good grip -

Sorry, I got distracted. But anyways, you get the point.

This is a site, which has never really cared about post count. The reputation is an amusing diversion. I say leave it as it is. Who knows? Someone might make an amusing game out of it a few weeks later.

If we just ended up civilizing TFF because everyone is going to be obsessive-compulsive about the rep and try to farm it, I am going to laugh my ass off.

Hmm... instead of "Reputation", is it possible to rename it to "Like" ?

To imply that I "liked" a particular post? Might help reduce some of the "Thank you" and one-word replies.

I dunno what version of MyBB we have but this goes up to 1.6 if I'm reading it right.

I can change the reputation system so that you can only give positive reputation instead of positive/nuetral/negative, if it's a huge deal, but I feel like it's kinda silly.

And that thanks system is available for use on icyboards, I could load it in two clicks. it can just take up a significant amount of room.

I just don't gaf really.

But if nick#s wasn't banned I'd definitely rally around an effort to downvote him into the triple digits range :)

What's the point of Nuetral? If you're going out of your way to give someone 'rep' nuetral seems utterly worthless frankly.

I don't know, that's why I disabled it. Just sounds like an invitation for passive aggressive idiocy.

Well regardless, as big an invitation as this rep is for butthurt, provided people provide reasons and we can check which posts they got negative points in it would be an interesting means of making sure negative behavior is tracked if we need to switch mods down the line, so repeat recent offenders don't get passed the baton if it comes down to it.

Negative gives us that much of a perk at least, though obviously people given negative rep for silly reasons probably wouldn't get penalized that way (So common sense must be used when reviewing such things). Good enough a reason to keep it I say, as many arguments as it will inevitably lead to.

I only gave out ONE reputation so far, to Shirotsume, because after he went through all this trouble to set everything up, the man deserves it, damn it.

And I see someone repped me up. Not sure if serious. o_O Okay, one's for Monster Girl Saga, so I guess it's more somebody poking me with a stick than anything else, but the other? Don't rep-up willy-nilly, people. Only rep up someone if you seriously, honestly think they worked hard enough to deserve it.

You can go into someone's profile and look at all the things they've been given Rep for. So it's going to be fairly obvious if somebody, say, sets up a dozen bot accounts and +reps themselves a few dozen times for nothing.

That said, later tonight I'm going to be +Repping every post by Hawk. Because I feel that he should have the highest, and arbitrary Rep games have always been a staple of Rep forums I've been a part of in the past.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me, how does the Rep thing work with the restricted section? In the Rep section it gives a hyperlink to the post # that got +Repped, so I assume that if you don't have access to that section the hyperlink just won't work?

Don't spam +rep shit. That's stupid, and Hawk is the last person that deserves it.

GH: Not that big of a deal. Why did I do all this, you ask?

Look at my avatar. Now back to me.

The Fiction must flow.

I really doubt it will be significant.

An old forum I used to go to had a similar system and everyone just ended up shitting around with it. All of the top posters had horribly negative rep.

Reputation is a good idea, for instance if you constantly act like a tool to every body this lets other know that's it's a good idea to totally disregard anything that comes outta your pie-hole.

Reputation...
I liken the system on nTFF it more to giving Kudos to someone. It's more of a "I want to publically recognize how awesome you are, but I don't want to be clumsy about it", than "His/Her/It's posts are cool, RATE UP!!! LOL!!!" not unlike reddit. It's not a game of who has more karma/rep/whatever you wanna call it, just a way to give them a silent thumbs up/thanks/keep up the good work.

Because in all honesty, one's own real reputation precedes them... if you are known for writing good stories, faq's, comments, critiques, etc; people are going to generally trust your words (up to a point), maybe even follow you into joining a forum they are part of and partake of their daily shenanigans. Otherwise you will have a system that will cater to either fanboys ("I must has moar, gibe rep +++, get moar stori!!!") and haters/trolls ("Haet'd It! --- / *insert Trollo song*).
