A megathread for this sounded interesting.

To start with, here's an interesting romhack: New Super Mario Bros. Origins. Not only do you get as close a presentation as possible to the original Super Mario Bros., but you also get Lost Levels and each level has a lot more secrets!

For a fangame/translation, The 7th Stand User is a pretty interesting game, being not only an adaptation of Stardust Crusaders but also with plenty of easter eggs and things to find. [And a sufficiently insane plot by the sounds of it...]

Hope people post more stuff!

The Mario 3 mod on the same site is pretty interesting as well. No leaf or Raccoon suit powerups though. I suppose the propeller hat might work as a stand in, but would still leave some of the secrets inaccessible.

I'll throw in a few.

First up: Secret of Mana VWF (vizzed link)
Changes the original fixed width font to variable width and implements a complete re-translation of the script. The original font really hindered the localization; this new font allows a more efficient placement of text in the text box, allowing for fleshed out dialogue.
Here's a sample before and after screenshot:

Breath of Fire 2 re-translation
Along the same lines, the script has been completely revamped. The original translation was notoriously terrible, enough that it detracted from the game itself. This patch fixes that. Give it a try; it really feels like a completely different game.

Castlevania 2, Simon's Quest Redaction (vizzed link)
Notice a theme to these hacks yet? Yes, this is another re-translation. Hints have been made less cryptic, the dialogue sped up and some minor sprite changes have been implemented. AVGN even did a mini review that served as a lead up to his movie.

Here's a catch-all for any 'balancing hack' of a game.

"We balanced the game out, and by that we mean we fixed a few glitches, maybe gave some of the playable characters a few new techniques, then dialed up the stats of all the enemies to over 9000."

Those are some of the best hacks, especially for newer games.

You do something like that to old school Megaman and I hate you, but to one of these soft squishy watered down US releases of games and you're my hero.

If the enemy buff was in reason, sure, but more often than not modifications like those just go too far the other way, making the game nigh-unplayable for different reasons.

You know, I found FFT to be an interesting concept, a nifty departure from the rest of the series, and the story was (at least initially) compelling.

But I hate almost everything about the gameplay.

Making it HARDER can be enjoyable for some games, but I personally thought FFT was a chore to play, so increased difficulty could only make me like it less.

Would anyone have links to a good Nintendo system emulator and games? And would it be better to dl it to my laptop HD, and dl a copy to my external HD, or simply stick with the laptop? Bear in mind, I don't bother keeping any files on my laptop, just my e-HD.

As you can probably tell, I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff. :sweat2:

I use emuparadise, dunno if there's a better site. The ROM pages should have links to suggested emulators on them towards the bottom. As for where to dl them to, it doesn't really matter where you run most of them from. But emulators for the more recent systems like to have their own folders in Documents no matter where you install them it seems.

Thank you! I've been wanting to dl an emulator for a while; I actually still have all my old Nintendo systems, but I've moved around so much in the last several years that I've still got boxes in my closet I haven't bothered to unpack.
