Title: Saving DW

Author: DhampyrX2

Genre: Drama/humor X-over

Rating: PG-13ish at best

Disclaimer: I don't own these characters. Don't sue me, I'm poor.

Summary: Launchpad never did fully trust Mogana Macawber and after seeing her allow her temper to get the best of her for yet another verbal slip of Drake's he's decided enough is enough. If DW won't save himself from this villaness then Darkwing's faithful sidekick will just have to recruit the right kind of help to save his surrogate brother.

*****

"Are you sure you don't need me here DW? I'm fine with staying and helping your patrol," Launchpad McQuack fretted as his best friend, roommate, and fellow crime fighter Drake Mallard a.k.a. Darkwing Duck pushed him toward the front door.

"For the last time, LP, it will be fine. I was defending the city alone for two years before I even met you. I can handle you vising your family for a weekend for Mother's Day. Besides, I already promised Gosalyn that Quiverwing and Arrow Kid could join me for patrol. I won't be alone," Drake assured his closest friend.

"But what if some of the Fearsome Five act up? I mean, I know Negaduck has been quiet lately, but I know Megavolt and Quackerjack are both on the loose," Launchpad protested.

"Megavolt and Quackerjack have both been laying low after the time top incident and you know it. Apparently a Masked Mallard that went off the deep end was enough to scare them straight for a little while," Drake replied with a small shudder as he recalled what Gosalyn had told them about "Darkwarrior Duck." He had added a new promise to himself to go along with the ones to protect St. Canard and be a good father to Gosalyn after learning of what his future self had become: to never let his grief allow that monster to come to be.

"Then how about you and Gos join me? Mom and Dad have both told me they feel like the two of you are family already just from me letter and phone calls. They'd love a chance to meet you both. Even my sister Loopy has been asking after you guys," Launchpad offered.

"And deny Gosalyn the chance to patrol properly after I already promised her she could? Besides, if things pick up too much I can still call you. And the rest of the Justice Ducks are on call if we need them. Heck, Stegmutt and Morg both live in St. Canard already," Drake responded with a reassuring smile.

Yeah, and what if Morgana gets mad when you insult her cooking again and decides to hit you with the lightning this time instead of using it just scare you? Launchpad asked himself mentally as he recalled the recent confrontation between Drake and his Sorceress girlfriend, the reformed villaness Morgana Macawber.

In all honesty, Launchpad was never fully convinced that Morgana was on the side of the angels, so to speak. Oh, he didn't doubt that she was almost as infatuated with DW as he was with her. You don't get that touchy about someone's opinion of your don't care about them. It was just the fact that her whole reform seemed to hinge on making DW give her a chance. He got the feeling that Morgana could care less about "Normals" and their laws if her "Dark" wasn't in the picture.

It probably didn't help that Launchpad's other enounters with spellcasters consisted mostly of Mr McD's problems of Magica Dispell.

Still, he knew it would only upset his hopelessly infatuated friend to mention his concerns about Morgana. After all, DW wouldn't listen to Launchpad about hos dangerous she was when she was still an active theif and raising those flesh-eating pizza mushrooms.

"Fine, DW, you win. I'll call you guys when I get there," Launchpad conceded. He knew how stubborn his partner could be and knew he would not win this argument. Besides, it had been a could of years since he had last seen his family. He could hardly wait to show them how well he had improved with his landings while working with DW. Heck, he hadn't even crashed the Thunderquack in over a month.

"Thanks, LP. Now get out of here and enjoy you time with your family," Drake ordered with a somewhat sad smile as he pushed his friend the rest of the way to the front door.

It was no big secret that Gosalyn and Launchpad himself were the only family Drake actually had. His own parents had died years ago, leaving the mallard confortably well off, if lonely. He had used his inheritance initally to train himself in his quest as the heroic protector of St. Canard, and later used a potion of it to puchase the house they now lived in after he had adopted Gosalyn.

Speaking of Gosalyn, she was barreling toward the duo at top speed to give Launchpad a hug before he walked out the door to the taki that would take him to the airfield and his personal byplane.

Drake could only look on and smile as his daughter said her own good-byes. They father-daughter duo planned to visit the cemetary to lay flowers on the graves of both his parents and Gosalyn's natural parents on Sunday, but until then he planned to make this weekend as much fun as possible for his adopted daughter.

It took a few more minutes before Launchpad finally found himself in his cab and on the way to his plane. As he rode in the back of the cab he was uncharacteristically quiet as his thoughts turned again toward Drake and Morgana. He had honestly thought her meeting with the Muddlefoots would slow the pair down in some way or another. After all, you didn't get much more Normal than the Muddlefoots; and with how Monster things bothered DW and Launchpad himself, Drake Mallard's neighbors should have sent Morgana screaming.

I just don't know how I can make DW see that she's dangerous and up to no good. I mean I know he's probably lonely with only me and Gos for company and Gosalyn deserves to have a mom around at some point, but does it have to be Morgana? Why can't he find a nice girl instead? Being a hero doesn't keep you having a good woman. Fenton has Gandra and he's Gizmoduck. Maybe I should ask Mom for advice while I'm there. She's always willing to listen of nothing else. And even if I can't mention about Drake being Darkwing Duck, I can still try to get her advice on his attraction to "bad girls." Launchpad thought to himself sullenly.

This looks promising. Let's just hope that Launchpad doesn't get the idea to borrow one of Aphroducki's arrows (but then again since the goddess took them with her that's pretty much impossible).

For some reason I could imagine your depiction of Launchpad reminscing over his Ducktales adventures before meeting Darkwing like how he defeated Armstrong, his attempt as a James Bond agent, his crushes like the alien princess and Sen-Sen.

BTW: Is it due to Launchpad's experiences with Magica DeSpell that he distrusts Morgana?

Great so far DhampyrX2. I was wondering when you would find time to write this, I didn't think it be so soon.

Partially. Remember that Morgana was willing to feed Launchpad to her mushrooms in her introduction and that she only cared about Darkwing's safety. That's a major point against her. Another is that Morgana has proven to be willing to use her magic as a weapon against Darkwing when she's upset with him. Couple that with LP's experiences with Magica and it doesn't paint a good picture for Morgana.

As for how Launchpad will approach things, all I will say here is that Loopy will get involved and hilarity will hpoefully insue.

You have a great memory for something that most have forgotten. I'm pretty sure the writers of that show have alzheimers by now.

Nah, I've just been watching some of the old episodes of Darkwing Duck on Youtube and it refreshed my memory about a lot of Ducktales too.

If my memory doesn't fail me I remember Launchpad also being a scoutmaster for the Junior Woodchucks and might have access to their guidebook or at least might seek help through his connections to them.

He was indeed. Which makes me wonder what Gosalyn would do with a copy of the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook. I seem to recall Huey, Dewey, and Louis shuddering at the thought of it ever getting into the wrong hands.

Hmmm... Launchpad setting DW up with his sister sounds like it could be filled with lulz, and it's a good opening too. Keep it up, Dhampyr, it's always nice to see a good fanfic about a show you became a fan of when a kid and still love today, especially one like Darkwing Duck.

Quiverwing and Arrow Kid would probably use whatever useful knowledge they can derive from the guidebook to fight crime and gather facts and in the private Gosalyn could learn a thing or two by browsing through it that could help her at school or with her homework. And maybe Gosalyn and Honker could ask Launchpad to assist them into joining the Junior Woodchucks.

Will Doofus Drake make a cameo appearance BTW?

Possibly, but not right away. Keep in mind that the Flying McQuacks don't live in Duckburg the way the nephews, Webby, and Doofus do. This will start with just Launchpad's family, but I could see things advancing to the point that the Ducktales crew could get involved at some point.

Launchpad felt a wave of nostalgia hit him as he approached the airstrip and hangar that was part of the homestead used by the Flying McQuacks when they were not touring with their airshow. this was the field where he had first learned to maintain an engine and the skies where he had first taken flight. Even with his occasional feeling of inadequacy in relation to the flying skills of the rest of his family a part of him still felt at home here in a way he never had in Duckburg or St. Canard.

Well no, that wasn't entirely true. He felt that same feeling of family with DW and gos that he felt here. Still it was good to be home. "This is LP one making his final approach and requesting permission to land. Over," Launchpad announced over the radio as he made his final checks before landing his old red by-plane. He had missed flying the old girl, even if her handling was nothing compared to the Thunderqucack. Of course he would have a hard time explaining what he was doing flying Darkwing Duck's plane outside of St. Canard.

"Oh, we see you hon, and we've got the crash crew on stand-by on runway three. Over," Launchpad's mother, Birdie McQuack, responded over the radio.

"Ah, ma," LP whined a bit in embarrassment as a small flush came to his cheeks.

"Now now, dear. Just take your time and we'll see you on the ground," Birdie responded as she help in a small giggle. Despite his... unusual landing habits Birdie had always been ridiculously proud of her eldest child. As she stood up from where she was watching his approach from the radio room she idly wondered if she would be able to add another picture to his collection of memorable crashes.

Birdie almost felt disappointed as she watched Launchpad make a perfect landing and taxi his plane to where his family was waiting for him as the flight crew employed by the McQuack Clan moved in to service the plane and move to the hangar. it seemed her little boy was growing up and moving out of his awkward stage.

"Nice landing Big Brother," Loopy complimented before blowing a bubble from her ever-present bubble gum.

"That sure was some dadgum good flying, son," LP's father, Ripcord, chimed in with his usual "John Wayne-esque" drawl. The muscular older mallard bore a proud grin as he patted his son on the shoulder before moving aside so that his wife and daughter could hug the prodigal McQuack.

"Oh honey, it's so good to see you in person. It's been too long since we've spoken," the diminutive birdie commented as she looked her son over in the way only a mother that had not seen her child in some time could.

"Of come on, Mom, we talk almost every week, and I write, too," Launchpad protested with an affable smile as the family made it's way toward the house and massive spread of food that had been set aside in anticipation of two McQuack men settling in for lunch.

"I know, dear, but it's not the same," Birdie responded as she enjoyed having her first born back in the nest.

"I see your friends didn't decide to join you, son" Ripcord commented with a look to the small personal plane LP had flown in.

Launchpad's mood soured a bit before he shrugged it off and responded, "Yeah, I invited Drake and Gos, but they didn't want to be a bother."

"Oh, that's nonsense, with the way you talk about them I feel like they're family already. And I was looking forward to showing they your baby pictures. I haven't had a chance to show someone new since you came with that nice Mr. McDuck and his nephews last time," Birdie cut in with a smile that bordered on curious at the look that had crossed her son's face.

"Well, Drake had mentioned that he and Gos were both going to the cemetery to visit their moms on Sunday, too," Launchpad added in a more subdued tone.

"Oh dear. I didn't think of that. I certainly wouldn't want to take them away from something like that," Birdie replied as a small frown as she recalled her some mentioning that Drake Mallard has been orphaned himself. It was one of the things that made her respect the fact that he had adopted young Gosalyn all the more. "Still, you can get the come next time can't you?"

"I'll see, Mom. It depends on Drake's work. His job as a consultant for S.H.U.S.H. can get kind of hectic on short notice," LP answered with the typical "cover story" for Drake's work as Darkwing Duck. It wasn't even a lie as J. Gander Hooter DID employ Darkwing as an official consultant/freelance agent.

"I suppose so," Birdie responded with a downcast expression.

"Cheer up mom, I did bring some new picture with me to go with the ones I sen you before," LP confided with a grin, knowing how his mother loved her pictures.

"Really? Well then, we'll just have to look the over after lunch," Birdie replied with a twinkle in her eye. Like the rest of the McQuack family, she was not one to remain depressed for very long.

"Did you say lunch? I'm starving," Lauchpad replied enthusiastically, much to the amusement of his family. It was good to see that no matter how long you were separated, some things never changed.

Just looking through your newest snippet makes me want to dig up all the old video tapes containing Ducktales episodes and watch them again or just buy all the Darkwing Duck and Ducktales seasons legally in DVD collections (even though they'll cost a bit). But then again most of them are on Youtube.

Even though I liked Darkwing Duck it's still older shows like Ducktales that gives me a nostalgic fuzzy feeling inside.
