Search for GATE stories

I have generally horrible luck with search requests, but figure this should be a generic enough one to get some results.

Looking for recommendations on decent to good GATE fan fiction. Preferably longer examples centered on the GATE characters.

To date, only seen part of the series. I've read one Ranma crossover 'And Thus Chaos Ensued' by Dreamingfox. I've also read several small stories (mostly introspection pieces that were one shots like 'Finally Home' by Goodalwayswins98 or short comedy like 'Lelei's Feet Problems' by Frob).

The problem with the bulk of this fandom I'm seeing is the horrible propensity to change where the gate opens. I've no interest in reading a GATE story where the gate opens in North Korea, or Russia, or Italy, or Romania, or China, or the 3rd Reich, or what would happen if Donald Trump had control of it (yes, there *is* such a story).

Nor am I interested in the politics on the Earth side.

I had thought I would find something good in crossovers, but the crossovers I'm seeing mostly do not interest me (like Halo, Mega Man, Star Wars), or are at best implausible (like Game of Thrones), or spend an inordinate amount of time on the characters/politics on the earth side (like Fate/Stay night).

Thoughts?

This drives the plot of like three-quarters of the original anime though....

I mean, generally, GATE is a mashup of two genres, "(real-world) military fiction" and "fantasy contact."

Considering that the Fantasy World was pretty undeveloped and what we did see was pretty bland, the most coherent part was the "real world military", and naturally the response would be "how would a different military react to that event."

Anyway don't hold your breath, I think what you're asking for literally doesn't exist.

Maybe go read the Salvation War?

I understood politics was a good part of the series... and expected to see stories on it... I just fail to see the point in fanfiction that does not cover the main characters much at all...

The thing though is that milfic stories basically aren't about the characters, they're about the events.

I mean, describe Gate in one sentence to yourself, I pretty much guarantee that if you mention any characters, they're just props.

I don't think you're, like, wrong to want character pieces, I just think that Gate is a different kind of story than that, and that it will naturally attract a different kind of response than that.

I can understand all that... but it misses the point...

My point though, is that GATE has races of bunnies (which almost sound like they would want Bun Bun as their leader), 2+ races of elves, demi/proto goddeses, goddesses, dragons, and pervert old mages and multiple human characters of interest from both sides of the gate.

Considering all that is thrown together for drawing in readers/viewers, for there to be almost no fan fiction stories really exploring all that (except mostly shorts and lemons) seems wrong.

From a political / military standpoint... realistically, most of those nations and groups I listed in the initial post, were the same done to them as was done to Japan... given their various histories, one need not have a university degree nor a long fan fiction story to figure out that the series is screwed.

Where it does get a bit more interesting is when there are alliances... like an attack in Japan that also affects people of other countries present in area. There at least I can see potential for a long interesting story, even if it is not the reading I personally am looking for.

I've run into this before, where a huge potential aspect of a fandom is ignored by most of its fans... Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is another to come to mind. Most just write how much better than science magic is, and how the TSAB are the altruistic infallible good guys, or whom ends up with whom.... Kenichi is another anime that fan fiction never came into its own, it is mostly fringe stories...

Oh well... I've a few more stories downloaded I'm still looking at, but I guess I'll probably just end up having to write off this fandom as well as having nothing much of interest.

EDIT: Edited a couple times in rapid succession to expand on and clarify several items.

I think the comparison with Nanoha is actually pretty good because-- they're both kind of shallow?

Yeah there are a bunch on different characters, but their internal motivations are pretty one-dimensional.

Nobody is conflicted or is struggling with divided ideas or mutually exclusive loyalties. There's just not enough emotion, you can't really get in someone's head and feel their struggle enough for someone to want to write a chapter drama. It's just... it doesn't have the qualities that drive fanfiction, I guess?

Plus there's definitely a network effect: series that are Alpha Popular get significantly more fanfic love than stories that are Beta Popular. Gate is well-received enough, but it doesn't have the character depth to push it past being an "also ran" from a fanfic perspective?

I feel like I'm talking circles around my real point without quite hitting the center or even know what exactly I'm rotating around.

Bad news, I'm having a terrible fic idea for something GATE related.

Please don't hate me forever.
