Serenity Trek

Well, now my current obsession has mutated into a strange fusion of Firefly and Star Trek: Enterprise. Hopefully I'll be able to use the space western style of Firefly to move back towards Naruto, but until then I'll just have to get these ideas out, dissect them, and hopefully move on.

I have seen a few fics where the lovable crew of Serenity has ended up in the Star Trek: Enterprise universe, but none really going beyond a few cliches and short jokes. Personally I'd love to see how Enterprise's journey would be altered if they had to bring Serenity along.

So here's the basic premise: Due to some strange quirk of fate, Serenity runs into an anomaly and appears in interstellar space on Enterprise's journey. After a few days puttering around, hopelessly far away from any planet or star, Enterprise picks up their signal and stops by to assist. Learning and figuring out that they're essentially stranded in this universe, Captain Reynolds, in order to survive, essentially offers Serenity's services, such as they are, to Enterprise's mission. Captain Archer might try to convince Mal to leave Serenity behind, but he wouldn't, and not being willing to just leave them... And Serenity's mass being much lower than Enterprise's, he decides they can afford to have Serenity dock with them and be tugged along as they go to warp. Mal decides to work for Archer in exchange for passage.

As Serenity can haul a lot more cargo than Enterprise's shuttles, they basically act as the preferred vessel for away missions to planetary surfaces. This makes resupply a lot easier and due to a Firefly's modular nature (and Trip and Kaylee's mechanical knowhow), she can carry sensors, probes, and even weapons, depending on the mission profile. While they have to attach this gear to the outside of Serenity in spacesuits, it's still more flexible than the shuttles. Serenity can also outrun the shuttlepods in normal space, and out-maneuver them.

Of course, the very different natures of Serenity's crew and Enterprise's would make for a lot of interesting... Side-effects.

The first change I envision was to the infamous episode Dear Doctor, wherein Doctor Phlox and Captain Archer doom an entire race to extinction by a really, REALLY stupid interpretation of the Prime Directive that borders on the racist.

A snippet as to Malcolm's reaction to that:

- - -

"They're what?!" Mal gaped in utter disbelief. River nodded, her mind much more balanced thanks to Phlox's treatments. Enough that she'd been able to get across what she'd seen in his and Captain Archer's minds before they'd come back aboard.

"Denying the cure... They have one. They're not going to share it," she said quietly. Jayne stared, uncomprehendingly.

"Gorramit, why?"

"They think they're interfering more than they should," River pronounced. Book shook his head, muttering a brief prayer.

"Lettin' fifty million people die just so's you don't interfere? What've they been doin' anyway?!" Kaylee asked, tears shining in her eyes. Mal shook his head, eyes hardening.

"River... Do you know where he keeps the cure?"

The reader nodded. Wash blinked, and then his eyes widened.

"Woah woah woah, hang on! You're not thinking-!"

"I am," Mal cut him off. Jayne glowered.

"They find out we're gonna be-!"

"So we do it so they don't know we gave them the cure, dong ma?" Mal stated. He glanced over at Kaylee. "We need to make somethin' up that lets us get the cure, get it to the ship, and get it to the planet without Archer's folks catching wise."

Simon blinked as all eyes fell on him. "W-Wait, why is everyone looking at me?"

"Phlox lets you into the sickbay any time you want."

Simon opened his mouth, trying to protest. If he was caught... They didn't know what to expect from this Starfleet. So far they'd gotten away with little things, like going off to save Mal and Archer on P'Jem and helping with a few "local trouble resolutions" at the systems they'd stopped in. But this...

Fifty million people...

Simon sighed, and nodded. "All right... But their security's going to be problem."

"Not if it's all focused elsewheres," Kaylee said, sing-song with a smile. She grinned. "I have a lesson with Trip today... On internal systems."

Mal nodded. "Good. As to Archer 'n Phlox..."

"I have an idea," River murmured. Mal looked at her. She smiled.

"I know just how to do it..."

- - -

Naturally, with the Serenity crew involved, the plan doesn't quite go accordingly...

- - -

"So, we're headin' out, right?" Wash asked Captain Archer. The fair-haired Starfleet captain nodded, sighing. T'Pol sat in the back of the cabin, meditating.

"Yeah... We just can't do anything else for them."

Not entirely a lie, Wash thought to himself, deftly bringing the shuttle into orbit. He frowned as his radio picked up an unusual signal. Archer spotted the same indicator on the control console.

"What's that?"

"Radio... Looks like Serenity's sending a signal," Wash observed. Archer frowned and managed to interpret the readings. Even between universes, some things stayed the same with regards to human technology.

"They're signaling a ship approaching Enterprise..."

Wash put it on speakers... And then immediately wished he hadn't.

"-Yes you go tsao de hun dawn! There's a gorram cure, now shut yer yaps!"

Wash could feel the shocked glare from Archer even without looking at him. T'Pol rose.

"What the hell was that?!" Archer demanded.

"Uh..."

Jayne you fay fay duh pee-en!

On the planet, Inara's shuttle slowly touched down on the public hoverpad near the main hospital. Mal stood up as River switched off the engines. Simon stood with him, the cure and all the notes he could get on making it crammed into a black kit.

"So far so good," Mal murmured. "Right then. We take this last load over, hand it to the superintendent, tell him it's the cure and not to ask more questions, and get out. Plain and simple."

"Right," Simon spoke, feeling nervous. River immediately tensed up as Mal moved to open the shuttle door.

"Captain...?"

"What?" He asked, opening the door. Loud cheers and screams greeted him, as he looked out over the street between the pad and the hospital.

A street filled with people being held back by riot police, some crying, some cheering, some begging for help, and all screaming it.

Flashes of cameras made Mal blink away spots as alien reporters closed in, demanding something in their strange language. He remembered to turn on the little microphone for the portable universal translator he'd "borrowed" from Hoshi.

"Cure! True cure have? Have cure? Why captain Enterpise cure no have?" He could barely make out through the screams and flashes.

"Gose," (Crap) Mal mumbled, even as he tried to smile congenially.

"Plain and simple... Right," Simon commented dryly.

"Bizui. (Shut up)"

Hey, you think this is weird, you should see when Mal meets the Klingons.

- - -

"So, let me get this straight. You're gonna talk to these Klingons, act all peaceable 'n agreeable... When Peaceable and agreeable ain't in their language?" Mal asked in disbelief. Archer frowned.

"Well, when you put it that way..."

- - -

Inara becoming an actual Ambassador (due to the fact that "Companionship" is illegal on Earth ships) would also be amusing.

And what Kaylee would do with a warp drive just drives me to giggle.

Will Vera  make a comeback here? Sure she ain't no phaser, but she's one beauty of a gun owned by Jayne.

Yes, Vera would be there. Every weapon from Pheobe to Agnes that Jayne has would be in attendance... And probably making Malcolm Reed on Enterprise a bit jealous.

After all, while they aren't phasers, Serenity's weapons are a bit more fun to use.

Yay!

Maybe Jayne should get some Klingon blades to add to his collection.

I get the feeling Mal might handle first contact... Maybe not better than Archer, but at least he wouldn't make humanity look like weak little pussies.

Kind of a twisted idea for the Xindi arc, if it were to be executed (though I'd do away with the Sphere Builders crap and just have the Xindi being manipulated by, say, the Romulans), I would be seriously tempted to have Serenity (after getting refit with a warp drive from an alien culture they helped) and some weapons, heading back to Earth ahead of the Death Star ripoff to sound the alarm. And ending up with Mal having to ram Serenity into the sphere while her warp core is set to overload in order to destroy it.

And afterwards, with the crews of Serenity and Enterprise being treated as "big damn heroes", Starfleet offering the somewhat despondent Malcolm a job.

Command of NX-03, originally named Challenger but renamed Serenity.

Somehow I don't see Malcolm adjusting to serving Starfleet that well, but it would be amusing if Earth handed over their newest and most advanced ship to him because they think he's the kind of man for exploration.

Hooo boy...

I shudder to think of what they could do with such a new ship and having the dysfunctional crew of the Serenity in it. And Kaylee should watch out when tinkering
so that she doesn't end up like Spock once did.

Well, in my idea Enterprise came across a system with cute, Munchkin-esque aliens with a unique form of warp drive. Basically, their warp engines were spheres surrounding a reactor, with two rings of warp field generators set spinning around the core. The core combines matter and antimatter and essentially pumps the energy onto the generators as they rotate, creating two rotating warp fields around the ship. This allows them to make very compact warp reactors that get a lot more speed than other drives of their size, but they are really complicated and restrict the design of their ships. As well as being a fuel hog.

Still, in thanks to Serenity's crew for stepping in and taking care of a few local pirates preying on them, they refit Serenity with this drive and shields. With the warp drive's subspace field they can get as fast as they did with their original fusion drive with just their old thrusters and can manage Warp 4 (though this burns their fuel very quickly).

My vision is that Serenity becomes famous (or infamous, depending on your POV) throughout the systems Enterprise explores, with her captain and crew representing humanity. Brave, a bit impulsive, illogical but also compassionate and ingenious. True space cowboys. Enterprise gets her fame, true, but it's Serenity who makes the Klingons and Andorians respect humans and the Romulans fear them.

I've been wondering something. Did anyone actually watch Enterprise?

I did it out of respect to Trek, but nothing more really. I saw it basically as a way of learning how NOT to write scifi...
