Virgil sighed as the recruits walked into his newest place of business. At the rate things were going, he was going to have to leave the island, or become a beggar. Still, he didn't want to give these bastards the satisfaction of leaving, and as much fun as it would be to teach them who the top dog was, he couldn't afford any more trouble.

"Well if it isn't Vergie, th island failure. Couldn't even cut it as a Marine trainee!" one of them ridiculed him, but Virgil gritted his teeth, and smiled.

"Is there anything I can get you fine, upstanding Marne trainees on this wonderful day?" he grated out.

"Nothing comes to mind, but you might want to clean up that mess!" the ringleader declared, knocking Virgil's tray out of his hand, before leaving his laughter echoing through the building. On the floor, Virgil was visibly trembling from trying to hold himself back from thrashing the hell out of those bastards. No matter how satisfying it would be, it would ruin things for the owner, and he wouldn't screw him over like that.

"Tough break." Virgil turned to see a man in monk's robes sitting nearby, calming sipping a cup of tea. Springing to his feet, he said the first thing that popped into his head.

"How'd you get that? I don't remember serving it to you..."

"I caught it when they spilled your tray. I find tea to be highly relaxing, useful for relieving stress. Care to join me?"

"...Sure, it's time for my break anyways."

"Have you always had issues with the marines?"

"This is more of a recent thing, but it probably won't resolve itself anytime soon."

"In that case, care to join me?"

"You're asking me to join you? We've only been talking for two minutes!"

"I believe that fate guides all our paths, and that our encounter is no exception. Besides, life on a ship can get lonely without companions."

"You have a ship? How'd a monk manage that?"

--- --- --- --- ---

"And so the journey begins," Zero said to himself as he descended from the temple. "But beyond the first step, where do I go? It's not like I can walk on water..."

Laughing to himself, he continued to the shore, where his grin grew wider.

"It looks like fate has decided to smile on me. What a fortuitus beginning on the path to enlightenment!"

Without any hesitation, Zero boarded the deserted ship, laughing all the while.

--- --- --- --- ---

"That's insane."

"Like I said, fate guides all our paths, and I am not one to deviate from it."

"I'm gonna need a bit of time to think. I don't like the idea of leaving my business with those guys unfinished."

Zero smiled, "Fate guides all paths, and karma has a way of catching up with guys like that."

--- --- --- --- ---

"AAAAHHH!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SHIP?!?!" One of the recruits shouted, his eyes bugging out of his head in disbelief.

"WE GOTTA FIND IT!!! THE SARGE'LL KILL US IF WE DON'T!!!"

------ ---------- --------- ----------

Lemme know if Virgil is out of character, or if you have any major issues with the start. Probably leave the island relatively soon, but not too quickly.

The former marine known as Lance sails along in his fishing boat to next island on the way. Spire Island, the training base for this arm of the Marines. The island was rather large with that mountain. He had heard rumors some sect of warrior monks lived up there.

"I should be able to get supplies and leave before anyone notices that I'm here. Stupid noble idiot! Why is it that morons get promoted to high ranks? Is there some god that protects stupid people and helps them prosper? Heh. At least I can acquire some good food here currently, If I remember right the supply ships will be in today."

Fixing a problem with the rigging he sails off toward the docks on the nearby Spire Island.

Saishu casually took a bite of the meat he had just cooked.

In the back ground, off the side of the ship, a sea king floats, it's skull smashed to pieces, as if hit by a cannonball.

"So this is the next stop huh?" I say to myself as I gaze at Spire Island.

"Whatever." I mutter noncommittally.

Neither of them would be here and if they were someone would brag about having one.

I'll just grab some stuff, ask for direction's and get out of here.

Virgil leaned back in his chair for a moment pondering, then deciding that this wasn't enough to really inspire thought. he mumbled a 'Be right back, need to think.' to the Monk, and was up and waving off a co worker who'd brought over a dustpan, broom, mop, and bucket, after taking the cleaning implements.

There were two ways he usually got deeper logical thinking done, music, and he didn't feel like going to his temporary room to grab his Ocarina, along with menial tasks.

He started with sweeping up the shattered cups and plates that hadn't survived the encounter with the trouble making idiots.

Would leaving the island be such a bad solution, especially i he did it quietly? It was pride that would keep him from doing so. Pride of what though? And what would he do otherwise, keep moving from job to job until no one would take him, then thrash the idiots good and hope to get put in jail or something where they would at least feed him. Or go to the other side of the island, build a house and live a hermit's life while living off the land?

Virgil had moved on to mopping the area of the spill.

Okay, say he got off the island and went somewhere. What would he do then, perhaps try and get a job on a merchant's ship as a body guard or something. Or even try and rejoin the Marines at a different training base?

Having cleaned the spot, Virgil kept going, giving the floor of the Inn's tavern/restaurant an impromptu cleaning, starting to pick up speed and mopping with fast spear like thrusts.

What if it was a trap of some sort? The Noble Fools having finally begged their daddies to hire a merc or something. Take him out to sea, have him humiliated or killed. The older man hadn't looked threatening, but if anything he was fairly quick and coordinated to have caught the cup.

In the end Virgil ended up back at the Monk's table, having mopped the parts of the room that he could, and no closer to a decision.

"I think I'll at least see the ship, after my shift, if you don't mind."

Putting on the Justice Coat before he got there was a good idea. He could play the part of Lt. Darenford and have the base resupply him, but first he needed to go get something to eat. Checking his knives to make sure they were there he docks the ship and heads towards the first restaurant he can find.

I hope they have fruit. I haven't had any good fruit for a while. Or they could have soda it's been a really long time since I've had some of that.

Ignoring whispers and gasps from the residents he makes way towards the main street.

Virgil plastered a smile on his face as someone new entered the Inn.

"Welcome to the Dancing Sea King, if you've just arrived might I suggest the Shore Leave Special?"

The special was something he'd helped make that morning, a thick gumbo with a lot of veggies and a good amount of surplus shrimp the owner had gotten a good deal on. A side of dried fruits and warm bread helped to round it out.

Bowing near automatically after the rehearsed line had been spoken, Virgil waited on the potential customers reply.

Taking note of the bowing person Lance raised an eyebrow and asked

"What is the Shore Leave Special?"

"It's a thick shrimp gumbo, with warm bread and some dried fruit on the side. A good pick me up when you're just getting in from sailing. Has a lot of the nutrients and vegetables any sailor needs after a voyage."

It was hard but Virgil managed to not spout off every ingredient in the food, he might just start getting hungry himself.

"Hmm, that sounds good. I'll take 3 or so orders of that and some soda. And maybe some fresh fruit for dessert. How much would that be?" Lance asks politely.

Virgil listed off a quick tally pulling a notepad and sketching down the order, while motioning the customer to a free table, incidentally the one next to the Monk's table.

"Three specials is 45, a soda should be about 3, and I can dip into the fresh fruit stock for another 3. All told, 51 Beli, any particular fruit you were looking for?"

He smiled, pleasantly now, hopefully this guy didn't try and run out on the bill and make him chase him down.

OOC:I'm not totally sure on the prices but I'll tentatively use this for now.

"That's a Decent Price, thou I might order more if I'm still hungry and melon for the fruit if you have any."

Lance hands the Beli to his waiter and waits for his food.

Saishu was having a good day so far.

Killed a Sea King, got some good meat...

Picked a fight with some Marines...

"Idiots shouldn't go around with such inflated opinions of themselves." I said mockingly.

Not that it mattered since they were very much unconscious but whatever.

I casually checked them for a few Beli, they might as well help pay for my supplies if they were so vehement on holding me up.

Not much, only a bit more then a thousand between the six of them, cheap bastards.
