Shokugeki no Souma

#51
It's good to know that Souma and I were on the same wavelength there. I still think it's dumb that he has to play sous-chef in his shokugeki challenge. I think it's probably because I want HIM to kick Chef Prick's ass and not shrinking violet girl.

While true, Dojima has a valid point. If Megumi's going to be a chef, she has to prove her worth; she can't rely on others to save her ass every time (even though, in this case, the guy was being a jackasshole and WANTED to fire a lot of people). So, if anything, she's going to have to show them what she's made of and with only Souma following her lead instead of vice versa.

As for the idea that this'll make Megumi a Mary Sue like Nodoka, in this school, you kind of HAVE to be one of the top dogs to graduate. It was only inevitable things would boil down to this, no pun intended.

Doujima does indeed have a good point, his logic is quite sound and I got that part before he even had to explain it on panel. Here's the thing though. I don't care about Megumi proving her worth and would be quite fine if she would just GTFO and in doing so make way for a more interesting character to stand next to Souma. It seems that isn't going to pan out, but I was hoping.

Anyway, the reason I made this post now...Chapter 24.

New chapters up. Well that's going about the way I expected.

Wonder what the fallout from this will be. Still, an interesting way to move the plot forward.

#57
Not how I expected it.

Figured they'd pull out the win even though it would be kinda BS because plot armor. I think Megumi gets expelled and Souma gets allowed to hang around. Or at least, he gets to try his own hand in order to defend his position at the school. Or, you know, they just take pity on her and let her stay because what Shinomiya did was bullshit to begin with and the quality of her dish has proven that out.

You're missing the not so hidden parralel. The alumni became famouse for his his approach to cooking vegetables. Megumi was praised for her vegetable dish that went in the exact opposite direction. The alumni might decide to keep her on just for that.

I still think it would be better to send her packing and really drive the nail home about how perilous this school is. She had to win this (admittedly somewhat unfair considering that the guy's a pro) challenge to preserve her spot and was unable to do so, even with a sous-chef and against an opponent that was apparently holding back. Letting her stay on now after all that is blatant plot armor. After all, her dish didn't cause the hallucination reactions that we're used to seeing. That, to me, sent a message stating 'you have some potential, but it's not enough to get you through to the end here at Tootsuki.' I won't complain if Megumi doesn't get expelled after all, but I think it would be better for the story as a whole if she did.

Except kicking her out means kicking Souma out as well, and that's not very fun now is it? I mean, is this series already cancelled?

It depends on how Boss Doujima decides to play things, since it's obvious that he's the one calling the shots. I think he wants Souma to continue at the school, so he'll probably twist some arms to let him remain, or at least let him defend his own (and only his own) now jeopardized spot in another contest. In that case, whether that mercy would extend to Megumi is another question. I do not believe that it would, since the whole point of making Megumi take the lead in this last shokugeki was to make her earn her own right to hang on. Perhaps she'll get a pat on the head for giving it a competent try against a pro and have her expulsion revoked, but I think it would kinda cheapen the 'survival of the fittest' thing that this school is supposed to be about. I guess we'll see what happens next chapter.

Given the circumstances, I don't think it would cheapen the entire "survival of the fittest" ideology of the school since the deck was rigged from the start. Since the arc looks to be about Megumi standing on her own merit, I think Doujima would overlook her expulsion if she proves that she does have the potential to become a top chef. After all, why fail someone for not slavishly following a recipe when you give them rotten products to work with? Sure, the recipe is important, but one should also be able to think outside of the box and improvise when a crisis evolves.

I also think that Doujima might penalize Mr. Légumes for going too easy on the kids. Guy is boss, he should make the other Alumni not take things easy just because it's 'lame'. True, if he had, Megumi wouldn't have impressed the cooks at all, but he didn't and the kids made a meal that is (in our view) legit good enough to face off against one of the Alumni. That, at the very least, is something that isn't supposed to happen at Tootsuki, and the fact that it managed to should be actually noticed by him.

Gods, I just ate and I'm already hungry just thinking about all that food. Can't wait until my copy of volume 1 arrives!

I'd have to agree here. The mitigating factor was that the test was rigged just so he could expel some students. when she was finally given good ingredients, she made a wonderful dish that probably rivaled what most of the students could make and go her high praise. It just wasn't as good as a pro chief dish, but learning such things is why they are even there to begin with.

I just got volume #1 on the mail! Time to liveblog the crap out of it!

The real cover is just a green lineart of the official cover with a grey title and no words on it, with a small 'Yukihira' icon marked on the back. On the protection cover there's a message from both artist and writer, with the writer being represented by a cartoon of a guy with a curly hair and a small mark on his big-nosed face and the artist by a cup with some African-style antelopes painted on it.

Being just the basic volume 1 (not an enhanced tankobon or anything), there are few gimmicks in this, no color pages or anything; just chapters 1-4, the original pilot chapter, and the short story about Souma's customer friend. I'll try to transcribe this last part right now...

"Bangaihen" [Kurase-san no Nikki]
"Extra chapter" [Ms. Kurase's Diary]

"Mayu- anta mo iku desho?"
"Mayu- are you coming too?"
Mayumi: "Ryouri taiketsu?" [Kurase Mayumi]
Mayumi: "A cooking showdown?" [Mayumi Kurase]
"Oyaji-san to shoubu suru kara shinsashite hashiindatte sa" "Anta Yukihiranchi itta koto nakatta yo wa?"
"Since the old man's dueling, we're gonna need a referee." "Could you come over to Yukihira's?"
Mayumi: "Cho- oishii ryouri ga taberarerushi konakya son da yo!"
Mayumi: "Wai- you know I'm weak to eating delicious food!"
Mayumi: 'Yukihira-kun no ouchikaa...'
Mayumi: 'Yukihira's house...'

Souma: "Ah! Kurase mo kita no ka!"
Souma: "Ah! Kurase just arrived!"
Mayumi: "O-ojamashimasu!"
Mayumi: "E-excuse me!"
Souma: "Kyou wa yoroshiku tanomu wa-"
Souma: "I hope you have fun today-"
Mayumi: 'Yukihira-kun to wa youchien kara issho deshita ka' 'Anmari hanashita koto wa arimasen'
Mayumi: 'I've known Yukihira ever since kindergarten.' 'We never really talked very much.'
Mayumi: 'Jisaku no obentou wo tomodachi ni tabesasete ookinakisasetari'
Mayumi: 'His homemade meals could make his classmates cry so much.'
Classmate: "BYAAAA" "MAZUI-"
Classmate: "WAAAAH" "IT'S AWFUL-"
Souma: "Ahahaha mazui darou? Tsugi wa kore kutteminayo"
Souma: "Ahahaha, it's awful? Next one's for everyone!"
Teacher: "Koraa Souma-kun!!"
Teacher: "Hey Souma-kun!!"
Mayumi: 'Itsuno mani ka kyoushoku no oba-chan no majidde itari'
Mayumi: 'Before I knew it, he was helping the cantina lady at school.'
Souma: "Mou choi usuaji no hou ga ii ka...?"
Souma: "I wonder if it should be this bland...?"
Cooking lady: "Atashyaane ano ko no ichimoku oiterundayo"
Cooking lady: "I wonder if I should follow that boy's decision..."
Teacher: "Iya mazui desu yo seito ni chourisaseta!"
Teacher: "No! It's a bad idea to let the students cook!"
Mayumi: 'Nandaka itsumo sugoi koto shiteru miteru dakedeshita'
Mayumi: 'For some reason, I started liking him when I learned more about him.'

Mayumi: 'Yukihira-kun no ouchi wa teishokuya-san de' 'Zuutto sono otetsudai wo shiterunda sou desu'
Mayumi: 'Yukihira's father was a daily dish cooker.' 'I learned that he had been his assistant this whole time.'
Mayumi: 'Kore to itta tokugi mo shumi mo nakute jimi na watashi kara suru to' 'Mou pro no sekai ni iru nante souzou mo dekinakute'
Mayumi: 'While I'm just a plain and quiet girl with no skills or hobbies' 'who can't even imagine what it's like to try to become a professional...'
Souma: "Oagari yo-"
Souma: "It's done-"
Mayumi: 'Hontou ni sugoi te' 'Omoundesu' 'Oishii...!'
Mayumi: 'It's really cool,' 'honorable,' 'tasty...!'

[Suuhungo]
[A few minutes later]
"Honto ni shimatteru..."
"It really closed..."
Classmate: "Oyaji-san wa kaigai de Yukihira mo ryou ni hairu rashiikara na" "Nihonichi sugee ryourigakkou nandaro?"
Classmate: "The old man went abroad, and Yukihira left to join some kinda" "fancy-pants Japan's best cooking school?"
"Aa Yukihira ni kyuugyousaretara bukatsugaeri dokode meshikueba iinda"
"Ahh, if Yukihira's closed then I guess we'll need to find a new place to eat at."
"Aitsu no gamble shinkikuryouri sura ima to natte wa koishii na..."
"I'm even gonna miss his terribly unlucky meals from now no..."
"Mayu- iku yo"
"Mayu- c'mon!"
Mayumi: "Ma-matte-"
Mayumi: "W-wait up-"
Mayumi: "Koukou mo issho dattara yokatta no ni na..."
Maymi: "I'd still have liked to go to the same class as you..."

Mayumi: 'Yukihira-kun wo zutto miteta koto-'
Mayumi: 'I've been watching Yukihira all this time-'
'Soshite ano geso no fuumi ga hon no sukoshi kimochi yokatta koto wa'
'And that tentacle's flavor made me feel a little good,'
'Dare ni mo iemasen deshita'
'not that I told anyone.'

Mayumi: 'Watashi koto henna kana...'
Mayumi: 'I feel kinda weird...'

Translation comes soon, but well, seems like our one chapter/cover wonder has a crush on Souma to me! (...or Soma. Urgh, i don't like *that* version...)

EDITED TO ADD that I translated this thing. Seems like she fell in love by eating the Peanut Butter Sex Tentacle.

...wow.

Decided to give this manga a try. Ignoring the last page of the first chapter, it's an enjoyable read... Also, I want Kirina or whatever her name is to die a horrible death... In terms of reputation, I mean. She's a colossal bitch!

Todokoro is love, instead. Also, it shows that this guy drew Hentai...

Did anyone else notice that this chapter was pretty much like the climax of Ratatouille?

Well, why would it be bad to be like that?

Boss Doujima shows why he's boss. Why he's the most powerful of the Alumni... and the most dangerous.

Can't wait until Souma has to outcook him.

Interesting that you like the character that I cannot like. Gives me too much of a flashback to Nodoka from Negima and how she got Mary Sue disease. I get the vibe that she's going to (by popular vote no less) be the love interest to Souma in the end. And that tends to reek of bullshit in my book.

It's why I don't quite mind the idea of her expulsion sticking. I'm willing to admit that how that situation came about is utter horseshit and would in actual business get the instructor canned.

Meh. I like Tadokoro because she's cute and pitiful and makes me want to hug her and never let go. Never had that kind of problem with Nodoka. And yeah, in the long run, she got Mary-Sued. And I REALLY prefer her over the bitch.

Edit: Also, yeah. Glasses instructor is a fucking idiot. 'Who said you could change the recipe?' So the recipe is more important than the actual taste?!?!?!

Edit2: Just read the latest chapter... Well, still bullshit, but at least I can understand why he became like that.

Soma is gunning for the top. Everything he's doing is a stepping stone for the right to compete against his father. With a goal like his this is practically a setback.
