Agreed. What amused me was how jealous Souma got when he saw that, and wanted a piece of the same action as Erina.
I was also surprised that Bookmaster was Erina's mom. I had been wondering where she had ended up. Maybe future chapters will explain just what is going on with quite a dysfunctional family I have ever seen in a manga.
To make something that would ensure that Erina's mom actually, you know, eats something for real instead of ending up vomiting it all over the place because her God's Tongue is so sensitive that she can't stomach any real food at all anymore?
Yeah, good luck with that, Asahi. That's *IF* you even get that far. We'll see.
Did it really? Because to me, it seemed like the whole Asahi/Tadokoro match was a result of him going "Let's use this setting instead on the poison injectors to quickly tenderize meat and sneak in some extra ingredients." He pretty much walked in with a false heel in his shoe filled with substitute ingredients.
I've let it sit a couple days but this series definitely needs someone who can pace it better and stage the intro of characters betters.
Hayama was intro'd right at the start of the Fall tourney which made his win feel empty because he just showed up and was handed the title of main rival. There's nothing to make the loss for Souma feel anything more than arbitrary. It's supposed to be a big grand moment where Souma has to adapt because he came up short when he was so sure he'd win but both the sudden "hey here's a criteria we didn't mention until now" and the fact that a character never established as anything other than someone good at cooking like Souma won makes it all fall flat. It's like, trying to have that Goku losing to Jackie Chun or Tien vibe to it but none of the work went into making it function.
Azami and Central was bad only that it was spoiled from the outset. You could have had some ambiguity to it, like maybe Azami didn't entirely usurp the headmaster spot but he was in a position to do great harm that left the headmaster turning to the students. Take the expulsion and FATE OF THE CULINARY WORLD off the fucking table and holy shit we have drama. We have suspense! Nothing feels like a slog because there is some ambiguity to the events. But no, we have to be assured Souma wins because they just assumed the problem was JUST that he lost, not the circumstances around him losing.
And now we're on Asahi and it just feels empty because he has no personality. He FEELS like he's supposed to be a reflection of Souma: fearless, flippant and all that but he's just blank. He's a person shaped space of nothing. He's not even a good villain, he's just winning because he should and there's a lot of stuff that'd be cool if they went and did the work to make us care but like, a two page spread of them facing off is wasted because no one cares about Asahi. Either Souma wins via ass pull or he loses because he has to keep his silver medal position to keep the complex of getting better. Ugh, if this is the final arc, I know for sure I don't want to read the author's next manga. Please give the artist a non-shit writer next time plox.
Under spoilers just in case you don't want a couple paragraphs of me whining.
