I've begun writing about a magical school (which is not in the Harry Potter universe), and one of the things I want to do is establish a number of potion recipes, but honestly, I'm sunk for ideas on what to do.
I don't want it to be like with WoW or Dragon Quest 8, i.e. grab two or three ingredients, toss 'em at each other and BAM, new potion.
Likewise, I don't want to use one stupidly complex system which was suggested. Apparently comes from Dresden Files and it requires one to have ingredients that acknowledge each of five senses, the mind and spirit.
That simply won't work because I want potions to be commercialized and fairly common, somewhere between full first aid kits and boxes of band-aids. I don't want them to be replacements for bandaids, but they should be common enough that every household has about two.
Any suggestions?
