Snow and Ice

To all my fellow North Texans here, I hope you stay safe if you have to drive on the snow and icy roads today. Last February was a hell of time, what with power being out for a week and a half in some places. I'm hoping that the power stays on and everyone stays warm!

Everyone who's used to snow and ice for months on end every year: Welcome to my Kingdom :p

Doesn't look like you guys have had the same power failures (yet) this year. Some lines that went down, but not failure of large parts of the grid itself.

I can tell you that things are a lot better than last year. I had no power for days and no functional fireplace. (It's gas powered) This year, I'm able to sit in my house and not be freezing my ass off, so yay for that! Unfortunately due to Texas not getting a lot of snow and ice in general; a lot of Texans, including myself, aren't comfortable/experienced driving in this weather.
It really sucks because I'm having to burn my second personal day due to my terrifying fear of driving on unstable roads. (I was hit by a car that lost control due to slippery roads 6 years ago)

Just imagine. You could be living where I'm at, where the snow never melts.

Notice how the one traffic sign just to the left of dead centre is almost completely covered up.

... is that accurate in your part of the province? Like, I know I'm a little south of your location, but we had rain earlier in the week which washed/melted away a lot of the snow.

And then, we had really HUGE snowfall a day later and I spent 1 - 2 hours shoveling the stuff around. -_- Looking outside my window - there's a lot of snow about, but there are signs of it melting ... slowly. Or that's just the slush and I'm hallucinating.

Up here is basically prairie climate for all intents and purposes

That's what my town is usually like in winter, but we've been oddly rainy this year.
So instead every snowfall has lasted a couple days, then melted down and refrozen into lovely sheets of ice.
My backyard is one big pit of ice.

Here in Ohio, at least my own part of it, we've had since mid January some fairly intense waves of snow, then it backs off, only to come back. I had a bare drive several days ago, though it took effort to get it that way. Then we had a good bit of a mix of icy rain and snow, making it hard to shovel and snowblowers were having difficulty with it. Now today, I've got the drive mostly bare, partly because a minor heat wave (in 40'sF) allowing for some melt, and I shovelled the rest. But in a couple days were supposed to back down in temps and get a lot more snow.

What part of the prairies are you in? I'm in central Alberta and we hit plus 24 today, it was gorgeous out.

The Kenora District, which I consider to be basically part of the prairies climatewise, even if politically it might not be. I did live in Alberta most of my life. Might be I need to get back there for some weather, because it's not breaking +10 for me for another week still!

For me, in N.E. Ohio, we've had attempts at snow off and on for weeks.... the temperature is just slightly too warm. this morning for example it was snowing, technically, but the aire and ground were 38F... so it instantly melted. What I've had to do a number of times though in the morning the last couple weeks was scrape off the windows of ice and snow from overnight.

Speaking of snow...I'm not in Manitoba, but I will still be in the pathway!

Probably about 30cm of snow since yesterday, and it's still snowing, though not as hard.

My car this morning after 12 hours of snow at work. Second picture I rubbed some snow off to show how thick it is.

This thread may be relevant again lol. Lots of people getting hit hard. I've had snow since end of October so it's just more snow for me. I do own my own house now though so I have to Shovel multiple times a week to keep on top of my driveway

Down here in Texas there's no snow, but we have the freezing winds! Currently sitting at 16F and dropping.
Stay warm my friends!

Whereas here in Maine... we're about to get a bunch of rain before the temperature plummets. Everything's gonna be coated in ice.
Also basically all day tomorrow is gonna have 50+ mph wind gusts.
Fun.

Yeah, here in Ohio as I type this it is 42F and raining off and on... However, late tonight, most of day tomorrow, and Saturday, it is supposed to snow, and temps supposed to drop., a lot.. I last saw in the weather report a few hours ago the high for tomorrow as 20F, Saturday as 10F, and Sunday as 13F, and none of those are the low or the temp with wind chills factored in... so it is going to get cold.

I was going to make a run to the gas station in a bit to top off the car gas tank... always a good idea before a storm to do so. adds weight tot he car as well.

Here in Ontario, it's freezing outside! The snow stopped falling some time ago, but we have a lot of wind pushing us about. Needed to step outside and even with gloves on, my hands felt really, really stiff. Brrr...!!

I shoveled last night, and I just now shoveled again and also laid down salt at front and side of house. We have not been innudated with snow like some portions of country, but the cold and wind are bad. Currently temperature floating around 0F, but with wind chill that is more like -15 or so. I've seen worse.

Presumably, the worst is over... but while I've yet to lose power or heat, my one brother had briefly once before getting it back. He has standing orders if any failure does not come back on he has a open invite to retreat to my house... since it is somewhat fortified, as I've a double sump pump and a Generac housewide generator unit.
