Is MUGEN fanfiction (that is, involving the various characters created for it) valid fanfiction, or not?

Isn't that where you could create characters yourself?

if it's what I think it is, than I don't think it would be fanfiction. Maybe an original story, but fanfiction, I doubt it.

But hey, if you say to hell with it and write something, who cares about valid or not, as long as it's enjoyable to read. B)

Not without a thorough setup phase.

MUGEN is basically a homebrew VS game, so all the characters in it have nothing to do with each other except in their series of origin. Type-Moon characters would know each other, but I doubt Arcueid Brunestud would recognize Alucard, for example.

In essence, since MUGEN is totally unofficial, the answer is "Nobody knows".

Well, MUGEN sorta leads into things like SNK VS. CAPCOM VS. MARVEL VS. CCB (Custom Character Barrage).

As for the setup, well... world tournament? It's not like all those 'RanmaxSM' Xovers really have one...

Yes, but at least they have established worlds to work with. Ranma is a published work, Sailor Moon is a published work, and thus fanfiction has something to work off of.

What I meant by the "VS game" comment is, MUGEN is a way for players to set up "dream matches". In other words, they didn't happen; we just played it like it did. Basically, without the author explaining the world he sets the story in (giving background, et al.), the audience is left going, "WTF is this?"

So, since there's no published "MUGEN world", and no series to base it on, the setting is all the author's call. The characters used in it are often taken from a "valid" series, though.

No, not that. I mean, the whole 'Ranma and Sailor Moon both happen at once, thus no trouble setting it up!' thing.

I think the problem is, that Mugen has no real world. You just use different worlds. So there is no Mugen fandom but the different fandoms used within Mugen.
