SpaceBattles requires registration as well now?

Well, that's one way of cutting down on server strain.

SB seems to be under a DDOS attack. Its an annoyance that the server can't handle until the move to xenforo is made. Mostly because of a little idiot who registered and then through a hissy fit about everyone so hard they deleted his account. He had threatened an attack and seems to be a script kiddy.

Doesn't know what the hell he's getting into, SB has a number of people who really know what they're doing and who would destroy his computer if its true.

I heard it was google hammering the place, because some of the topics in general discussion managed to get pretty high up in it's search results for a breaking news story.

Is there a public timeline for the move, or just the general 'when enough cash isn't going into keeping what's there accessible'?

From what I've heard, the move won't be happening any time soon because the new software in question, XenForo, is tied up in a lawsuit.

<a href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XenForo' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XenForo</a>

The company that bought the rights to vBulletin is claiming copyright infringement.

edit: The server is back up, but due to the high number of guests browsing the site, the forums are temporarily restricted to registered users only.

edit2: guests are now allowed to see thread lists, but not the threads themselves.
Guess I was wrong, spacebattles is moving to XenForo soon. One of the admins posted an update. 2012?02?08?

I apologize for the semi-necro, but IÆve noticed several people linking to Spacebattles recently, and didn't want to go off subject when there is an offical topic already. So do any of the people who are registered have any idea of when the site's general availability will be back?

Not for a while is my guess. I finally just gave in and registered. I don't have any presence there, but I do want to be able to follow links.

Somewhere between never, and when that mythical forum move which has been on the cards for almost 3 years actually happens.

vBulletin and spacebattles are horrifically combination compared to how poorly sized the hardware they have is. vBulletin is also really shit at rendering long threads, and search bots where hitting those long threads frequently which was even worse.

When the people Kier used to work for stop being dicks over the new server software is my guess; there's this great big ongoing lawsuit drama because they claim he stole their code.

It's a bit more difficult for me, because I requested a banning after getting fed up with the general bullshit that was their political discussion forum and how the mods reacted to all the insane shit that was spouted there.

I logged off my account after requesting the banning so I could continue reading a couple of fics I was following, but that seems foolish in hindsight.

Not really... I was once so disgusted here I had inquired into the possibility of a read only login account to where even if I wanted to I could not make any more posts. This was back when Hawk actually was more of a presence than now... It never came to pass obviously, but that was more due to fact that no one was even sure how to set it up.

What you describe would have been in effect a similar functionality to what I wanted.

Meh...

I was at the time mad, discouraged, and disgusted. Once I realized I was not going to get what I had at time thought I wanted, and had quite a bit of time to get over it... I moved on... I've never forgotten though the reasons I was driven to it though.

I still like the idea of it at least being available... It could also be a forum punishment tool... instead of a temp ban... do this temporarily as a type of gag order.

Not that it matters here, considering there is no real moderation.

no clue other than the fact that the guy who runs the site apparently designed xenforo

def seen forums way bigger run fine on vbulletin.

vBulletin suffers badly, badly I say, once you regularly hit threadsizes of >1000, because then everything goes tits up. Look at rpg.net, look at SB, all the proof you ever need that the darn system's not built to take and roll with few big threads, instead of many small ones.

they were having some serious problems yes. they had to tell everyone to cap threads at 20 pages to stop the lag, which was a huge annoyance to everyone.

A chunk of it is that one of the guys running it used to work for vbulletin, he used the forums as a testing ground and has been planning a shift since leaving there for the new one he's been working on.

Xenforo is also supposed to be able to deal with issues like the brat who pulled a DDOS on the site (What prompted the registered only shift).

And it means that a lot of threads can be combined into one again, though that may be wishful thinking for mod availability.

But searches should come back soon (The twitter feed seems to point to that ATM)

And the major crash issues with threads of any real length

Not sure why. I woke up in the morning, decided to see if anything was happening, and it was down.

Spacebattles is stored in an old server that reportedly has been at risk of total meltdown for some time now. The web software change was done in an attempt to prevent the darn thing dying on us.

This might or might not have happened now.

Well shit. I suppose that means if it happens everything is lost.
