SpaceBattles Server Problems

To be fair to the admins, they are in a fairly unenviable position (what with limited access to the system and a board owner that does not care) and The Observer in particular was involved in the mother of all shitstorms a couple months ago, when they fired a popular supermod in the clumsiest way you can imagine. Combine this with people being very demanding/bitchy about all this, and I completely understand the temptation to snark back.

FYI: For those interested I have taken several update and recommendation threads on the SpaceBattles forum and turned them into reports using my own system.

Unless the Moderators there decide to delete the thread, the files can be found at Fukufics at the below thread:

PCHeintz72's List Side Projects 06-28-2014 - SpaceBattles
- [Direct] http://www.fukufics.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=7983

Note this in no way detracts from Estrecca's own efforts to do something very similar as we have taken differing approaches to how they are being done. The results *will* differ.

Oh, and note for those more used to the SpaceBattles format of representing links rather than my own, I suggest the Linked List version of the BB2 formatted file in a TXT editor. It is not identical, but on stories with metadata, it is the closest.

Hmmm... is the site down again... I was in the middle of checking it for a few updated, like Task force 43, which at least had some activity in the thread if not a update, when the site stopped responding.

EDIT1: seems back up

EDIT2: Since I happened to see that it looked like new members were no longer blocked, I had finally decided to cave in and become a member, as I wanted to leave a post in a particular thread. once I got past the deceptive Capcha, and verification email, I find a new issue.

It specifically notes the only forum I should be able to see is the New Members one, and that I need to post there to get fully activated. The problem is I can as far as tell see the whole forum *except* that, and a search did not turn it up.

Hello PCHeintz72,

Thank you for joining SB. In order to join us fully you now need to post in the New New Members Forum which should be the only forum you can currently see. Once you do this the server will automatically upgrade you to full access. Be advised that it can take half an hour for your post to be noticed so be patient, it will happen.

If after about an hour you still haven't gotten full access feel free to message The Observer for help.

Cheers,

The Observer
EDIT3: Nevermind I see the problem... they still show the above, but it is not valid... if you wait long enough for the message banners at the top to scroll sideways... you eventually get the following instead:
Welcome, PCHeintz72. If you're seeing this, you've registered and logged in but your account hasn't yet been approved. Right now, all new accounts require staff approval before they can post and view the New Members Forum (which all accounts have to post in at least once as a last line anti-spam detection measure.) I try to clear out the wait list at least once every day, so the wait time should not be longer than that barring extraneous circumstances. As a rule, accounts are approved unless we have reason to believe they're spam accounts, they're using proxy services to register, or we have reason to believe a given user already has an account (we prefer to avoid users having multiple 'sockpuppet' accounts as these are against our rules and tend to be problematic from a community standpoint.) Sorry for any inconvenience this causes. -Cpl_Facehugger.
I did not see it as I made the mistake of immediately jumping around trying to find the thread to post in.

Heh...

Two and a half days of being able to post after figuring out my issues becoming a member, and then they turn off the site.

I don't understand. It was working just fine a few minutes ago and suddenly I get the 'this page is not available' crap.

God dammit. Hopefully he stops tinkering with what we already know is going to get the site down.

Well... I was just able to get in... though I've no clue how long that state of affairs will last.

SB isn't working right now.
Seems fine for me... My issue is since Zcenicx has not told the mods to unlock the Task Force 43 Rebirth II thread, and the only 2 other threads I monitor have not been updated in some time, I've no real reason to go there.

I have noticed they keep changing the site banner logo... I quite dislike that. I've seen I think near half a dozen logos over the last month, most annoying.

Actually, they're holding a vote for a new logo and have the choices up on a rotation for people to see them displayed before making the final decision.

Also, been working fine for me all night.

It is the same issue I had when we started playing with it here.

I generally do not care in the slightest on what the logo of a site, mostly any site looks like, as I do not go to the site for a logo, but content...

However, by constantly changing it, it completely throws me off when I first go to the site, making me wonder if I really am on the site at all... That is why find it annoying. Change for the sake of change is generally pointless.

Every time I try and go to Spacebattles, I get an error message saying that my browser can't find the site. I've tried it on three different browsers, each on a different device, and I get the same message. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with my internet access, because I am able to go to other Xenforo boards, and every other site works just fine. It's just Spacebattles that is the problem.

Well, it's working for one of my devices. Time to check the others. And all I had to do was change the DPS codes a bit.

Could it be you are using FF? it is possible it needs the same fix as was needed for some users that was posted in the FanFiction.NET problems thread... the other day a bunch of people had that issue n FF.NET.

As a FYI, it may have been only for a short period, but was getting page could not be found messages on links to SpaceBattles. Oddly, a refresh on the page caused them to pop up.

Possibly related, A note in their threads says "Adjusted redis persistence options to hopefully reduce some occasional stalls.''

Is anyone else getting a 503 error on SB.com (or otherwise unable to access it)?

Yes, I got it 3 hours or so ago and hoped it'd be up by the time I got back.

Same... until it comes back, I can't do my daily check to see if Task Force 43 updated. On the other hand, since it has both been over a year, and I checked yesterday, it is unlikely to have updated with the site down.

I was reminded they had a Twitter for it.

I know that SB had been working fine as of 10:38 AM, but half an hour later I noticed it said "503 Service Unavailable No server is available to handle this request." I'm thinking it's some a$$hole going overboard on an April Fools prank, messing things up for everyone else. Somewhat annoying, as I had two things to post for Jumpchain. I'll check again at midnight.
