Not really surprised that Kaal got himself banned, he seems to have a habit of really going off. No idea about Rabe.

And currently the site appears to be sorta down. Not that the lag is so bad it can't be reached (or at least it doesn't seem like that).

No, you go to the site and you get this message.

"SB is turned off?? Say it ain't so! If only I had something, ANYTHING else to do but SB is my life!" is how I picture your reaction right now.

How accurate was I? Be honest on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being "not at all" and 10 being "totally accurate." Just go ahead and post your resp.... oh, yeah, forgot about the whole SB being turned off thing.

Not sure if it's been hacked or what.
Nope, this is scheduled maintenance. Something regarding fucked up forum account permissions that screwed around with available user options (such as the ability to delete posts).

More specifically, a botched account(s) import from the vBulletin days that resulted in one fucking mess that required a clean sweep/reset of said permissions (and the forced downtime to do so).

That being said, it's one more band-aid on the whole server lag mess (the server is reportedly just too damned old, hardware-wise, and couldn't keep up with the meteoric growth of new registered users, and thus sheer post count that needs to be regularly indexed and backed up).

Lastly, the only guy with the full/complete means to resolve this, Kier Darby himself, has no free time whatsoever to get involved, in spite of SB's admin team's efforts to contact him.

I can't help but feel a tad very bitter about it all, even though Kier is pretty much lead developer of all XenForo development (and thus fucking busy is one damned understatement).

EDIT: Back up again... for now. Spoke too soon. Third time's the charm?

OTOH, today's lag was considerably reduced compared to the last few weeks months; guess a lot of people finally got around to disabling e-mail alerts (one more feature that contributed to the lag).
Hmmm... that site might benefit from switching to RSS feeds rather than email alerts... that way it need not constantly be sending out a bazillion email alerts but merely update xml index tags for threads... but I do not know enough about the system to say for sure...

It does not affect me personally either way, as I've never bothered becoming a member, despite being a bigger Sci-Fi fan than an anime one. Been tempted to a 1/2 dozen times over the last 15 years though.
Then what's with the 'feeling more oppressed than yesterday' thing?

That's just The Observer's (one of SB's mods, kind of in a loopy/over-worked mood due to the account(s) permission fracas) weird sense of humor at work.

Don't know all that much personally about Isil`Zha (the most recently inducted moderator), other than he has a shitton of experience in the IT world.

It sounds like its just the backup process thats causing most of the lag.

Sounds like your garden variety read lock issue with backups...

Switch to innodb if you haven't already, if that doesn't fix, just use a read-only slave/mode during backups like twisting the hellmouth does.

As a long-term fix, splitting read/writes between a master/slave is a very, very good performance boost for a busy forum.

It's not a problem of it being unfixable, it's a problem of the only one able to decisively fix it being unavailable.

hmm. Could someone tell The Observer that Shinzero02 can't see SB while logged in? It says to PM him if you can't and I can't even do that.

I don't think he realizes that we have so few permissions we can't even access our alerts. :p

You should probably just create an alt.

Oh, so it's not just me who can't see anything. I was worried that I was banned. Then I started getting pissed, because I have done nothing in the past few months that could REMOTELY require even a warning.

I feel much better now. I'm going to go to bed now, and hope it's fixed tomorrow afternoon. If not, then I'll create an alternate account--and specify that this is ONLY so I can PM The Observer.

Would any of you who can mind messaging TO for me as well? I really don't want to make a throwaway account if I can help it.

#59
I've already sent in a PM about this, but The Observer is offline right now. I imagine this'll be addressed once he's back, but does anyone want me to mention them to TO, just in case?

This is Delta Green. I have the same problem as many. Could someone inform The Observer that I still can't access SB?

Anyone else? Just tell me your SB name and I'll PM The Observer. Hey, Border42. Did you get locked out too?

I was locked, but I created an alt, messaged him, and got out.

And is anyone else now getting an 'unexpected error occured'? It seems different from the usual lag.

[Edit] Just went away.

... Yeah that'd probably be more feasible and faster than me making a list and name dropping everyone in a PM. He's not online right now, though. So anyone who hasn't already done that will have to wait.

Eh, it got fixed for me, and I didn't even have to do anything but wait.

By the way, in case anyone doesn't know, the error message is because the new mod changed some things so that SB, instead of trying to just chug through the lag, shuts down until it catches up.

I wondered if that was what happened. Explains why it's so randomly intermittent.

Looks like something new is going on, because now I'm not even getting an error message from SB, it's not even responding.

*Taking bets on this being yet another DMCA takedown SNAFU*

#69
Goddamn it. If that's the reason… Those guys have got to stop doing takedowns at the merest hint of a DMCA.

For God's sake. That Toucan was already reaching into utter lunacy, what happened now? Someone felt offended that their name was mentioned without authorization?

And yet the Copyfraud Alliance (MPAA, RIAA and their friends) think that IP laws don't go far enough.

Fairly sure from the error he lowered the wait_timeout on mysql, which is probably a good thing.

It always irritates me when sites I like are down, as my day job is fixing all kind of sites I dont particularly care about...

I really hope it's just another server fart that went FUBAR, and not some inane reason like shit from, as Nanya puts it, the Copyfraud Alliance .
