SpaceBattles Server Problems

Downtime as of ~15:20, Pacific Standard Time. Let's see how long this particular bout lasts.

EDIT: SB.com is once again operational, as of ~15:42 PST.

Addendum: Spoke too soon, another downtime session, ~16:00 PST.

Looks like this is going to be a recurring theme for awhile.

Well, seems the sites memory allocation is FUBAR at the moment, and Kier, the only staff there with access to the server, is absent, and has been since Christmas

Probably collapsed due to overabundance of hyperlinks... (kidding, as that would not really do much except somewhat slow page load times, not affect memory allocation)

Tried scraping a few threads off there recently, the amount of interconnected links I found after pulling out the raw links in some of the threads is astounding.

I do wish I had grabbed the star trek recommended thread though before. Still, got some good long stories to read from the Babylon 5 and other recommended threads that I did grab a few days ago.

Seems likely that this is gonna be it for SpaceBattles. Most of the membership that didn't switch to Sufficient Velocity back during the Athene debacle are doing so now.

The membership one is due to a hacker issue that's been going on, there's a creep who's going around posting kiddie porn and a lot of other stuff, and has managed to bypass a few bans before they shut down registration until they figured out how to get rid of the pest.

It's possible that the guy is also responsible for other things since he's apparently got a lot of capability for bypassing other security...

Not to mention that SV is also having server problems at the moment

Hmmm... maybe I'll have to revive the idea of the Spacebattles Lister side projects in grabbing the recommendation threads I wanted.

I'd have to cut out the spacebattles links, if the forum goes, but there are still a lot of links going elsewhere.

I currently have scraped (and scrapped) from a few days ago the various B5, NGE, LH, ZNT/FOZ and Macross/Robotech recommendation threads, I'd need to grab the Star Trek and Ranma ones, and optionally the Stargate one to get the main ones of interest to me.

Sadly though, I've only a couple stories grabbed that are on Spacebattles itself... the main one to come to mind is Task Force 43. A lot of the members were pretty stubborn, and dare I say proud, on insisting on not posting elsewhere.

EDIT: Just grabbed the Star Trek recommendation thread...

Yeah, they shut down for a while... To UPGRADE the server. As for myself, I don't see SB recovering from this unless Kier start giving a shit, which I highly doubt.

Well, R.I.P. SB. It's been fun while it lasted.

Well, looks like she's breathed her last. All I'm getting now are error messages whenever I try to load any page, even the home page.

I'm able to get to home page and the threads I've been scaping, though I am not logged in since not a member, that might be the reason.

I did get the Ranma and Star Trek ones from my list... That left just the Stargate ones, which I've not bothered with yet. So for six series I have all the rec threads I was able to dig up for each of them.

People do read the announcements they put up on the front of the site, right?

So the server that SB is on seems to be running out of disk space, with the predictable consequences of effectively sinking SB if it does in fact happen, and some problems have already been popping up. As such, we asked you earlier today to post responsibly for the time being, limiting non-necessary postings, while we were searching for a solution.

Disabling posting outright for the time being was also being considered; upon consulting with SB's technical support experts on the situation and how severe it truly was, we have taken additional measures for now to prevent potential data corruption, in order to make sure that we save all of SB's current content rather than risk some of it being lost, while we try to find a way to solve this problem more properly.

SB is now read only for everyone except staff members who can still post while we try to resolve this.

We'll keep you updated on how the situation develops via these messages. Hopefully we will find a solution soon and you will be able to return to your normal everyday posting.

And

There's been talk of people trying to desperately back up their posts and such due to the panic over SB's condition. I'll put it simply: SB isn't going to go "Poof".

The fact that SB is effectively in an induced coma is precisely to keep that from happening. The staff is working on this, it is our top priority. Please remain patient. I assure you, SB will be back up and running once it's safe to do so without risking anyone's data.

So, basically, stop worrying about having to back up your stuff. The less activity SB has while this mess is being sorted out the better. Just keep an eye on SB's status and be patient.

Still annoying, this and MangaTraders at the same time. Next Twitter'll go and take Beast's Lair with it.

So, you can post in SB again. But they cut profile posts.

And someone already reported yet another database error, so it seems cutting yet another feature will not give much time.

Reportedly the problem has been dealt with for the time being, no long term solution yet.

To quote the message on the site:

"SB is turned off?? Say it ain't so! If only I had something, ANYTHING else to do but SB is my life!" is how I picture your reaction right now.

How accurate was I? Be honest on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being "not at all" and 10 being "totally accurate." Just go ahead and post your resp.... oh, yeah, forgot about the whole SB being turned off thing.

Sorry guys but if I get this to work it will be well worth the wait! If not, I'll turn it back on and you'll have no idea what I was trying to do.

So all we can do is hope.

...

That is a decidedly not very nice way to treat their members.

SB is back, I have to assume TO's tweak failed as there's no word of it.

Well it didn't last for very long and they are trying to keep their site from going and taking all its posts with it.

Oh, don't misunderstand me, as a programmer/developer myself, I understand some of what they must be facing on their end.

I do not begrudge them taking steps to put data security even ahead of access. Over the years I've seen forums crash, or need resetting with loss of data, or even without proper backups, that tends to destroy forums....

No... I merely meant the wording and tone of the message. I am not a member, so at least personally it does not overly bother me per se. But even as blunt and as undiplomatic as I can be... I still would have tried to find a better way of stating some of those statements in that post.

And that is not an endorsement to revolt. The last thing members should be doing right now is distracting those attempting to save the site.
