State of the Forum

Hi! I'm Watashiwa. Most of you probably know me. I think I've posted at least once in every board on the forum, I run that Iron Fic contest thing you've probably seen around (though every year there are a few people who ask what it is...) and the forty or so of you who spend time on the IRC know me pretty well.

And now I'm admin. Jesus Christ.

Now that all the members of the newly elected moderation and administration team have had a chance to get used to their new control panels--and how different the forum works on higher permission levels, seriously I still can't get over the extra menus--I decided it was time to go over some official business and point out differences from the main site that you might have missed.

First off, the team is as follows:

Administrators: Watashiwa, The Ero-Sennin
Moderators: GenocideHeart, Souffle, and chronodekar

You should be able to recognize us by the fact that our names are differently colored, the fact that we all won internet popularity contests, and the fact that all of our avatars feature someone evil. Except chronodekar. Which is also funny.

Most of the time we're going to be posting and behaving as regular members--expect seriousness, trolling, rage, baiting, trollragebaiting and humor in whatever quantities you're used to seeing from us. There are two, maybe three, exceptions to this rule. The first is in the case of illegal content whether that be pr0n outside the lemon forum, advertising things other than fanfiction distastefully, spam, CP, death threats and anything else that'd get the FBI on us or convince icyboard to shut us down. Secondly, if someone files a moderation report, it is up to the responding moderator whether or not moderation action is necessary, and what retributive action to take. Moderators who take action are required to file a report in the Moderation Reports thread, with an edited copy of the moderation request and explanation of the action taken. If you feel you've been unfairly judged post on the Appeals board, specifying the action taken against you. Banned users have access to this forum.

The third case is one I am leery of, but I believe it is acceptable for moderators to edit or delete posts where a member's conduct is indisputably vile and outrageous. This, I hope, should prevent another diaper incident. If you don't remember what I'm talking about you're lucky.

In any of the above cases, or when issuing official warnings to a thread, moderators and admins will use a "flair", a specific colored text that matches their name. Admins will use green, bolded and italicized text , moderators will use purple bolded text. In all other circumstances they are talking as registered members, even in the case of warnings and advisements. So yes, you're perfectly in the right to ignore anything we say unless we're colored up. If we hit you for something we said in a normal post, get a screenshot and appeal.

Did you know we had a chat button? I sure as hell didn't. It's up in the header. Click it to jump straight to #TFF-mods, the only official TFF IRC. If you need a hand or want to bring something to our attention quickly, try that. Note that moderation requests are only processed if they come through the forum, we won't deal with anything we get on the IRC except illegal content and gross behavior.

We also have the ability to collapse forums and subforums! There's a horizontal bar on the right side of every thread title page. Click it and everything under that section is gone from your interface!

As you might realize, we're going to be opening new sub-fora and closing old ones. The rule is: if you think it'll be used, prove it and use it. Start a thread in the suggestion forum and if you get twenty supporters in a one day period you get your section on a trial basis. If you get a consistent amount of traffic and posts it stays.

Forums that are being removed will have all their posts moved, not deleted. A post will go up in each subforum under consideration before the move, giving posters the chance to prove that the section isn't dead. But since most subsections we're considering see two posts a month at best?

If you haven't already done so, add an e-mail account to your profile. They weren't brought over from oTFF, so if you want alerts or the ability to change profile information you need to add it again.

To end on a high note, we've got an arcade installed. Click the Games button on the header. The full list of all games we can install is in a thread by Shirotsume in the Suggestions Box.

That's all for now, I'll edit things in as they're brought up or occur to me. Thanks for the vote of confidence, TFF. WE'RE BACK!

Eh, not too sure on this part. 20 supporters is a hefty sum to get in a one day period when complications could arise that reduces the potential number if they don't properly organize. Even some of the really no shit stuff like MLP could get rather easily rejected on such criteria.

Cool. Glad to see you laying the stuff out, Wata. Looking forward to the reign of evil.

Also, I'd recommend disallowing non-admins and mods from using the special text. I know we have some members who like to post in alternate colors, but it removes any confusion.

Meh, sufficient patience can deal with the problem.

Plan A: Find fans of the relevant series in other places, recruit them, get them active on TFF, link them threads that would interest them, get them to post and contribute, do this till you have at least 20, wait a month, tell them all about it the day before, then make the thread.

New section complete with user base.

Bam.

Plan B: If your to lazy for THAT, just find threads relevant, make a list of people who like the subject, get a bot from somewhere, have it send them all a pm that you're making a thread to make a ______ Section tomorrow, then derp around, go to sleep, wake up, make the thread and call it done.

Plan C: Or make a pre thread a few days before that tells people when you'll be making the actual one in whatever section the series in question gets fics.

Obviously, I have thought a lot about this.

You don't win during the battle.

You win before it even starts.

HH: The idea is that we're posting in the colors and styles of our member names. I think the only TFFer who posts in colors that might be a problem is OniGanon, and he hasn't been on nTFF in three weeks, and then only for two minutes. If it winds up being an issue we'll make an issue of it.

My only comment is that I dislike the idea of a mod deleting a post, for any reason at all. Editing it clean, sure, but not deleting.

Also, you should mention that TFF_Admin is ALWAYS admin mode on- it will never post as a regular user, and as such has no color.

With that in mind, you should change this text into green italics for technicalities' sake.

EDIT: more info- some people may have to turn PM notifications on. WHen it's on, you'll get a bar much like what oTFF had at the top of the screen saying you have a PM.

THere is a theme changer at the bottom of the page. Fallback is a theme that will work under any circumstance. Light Default is the default theme. Mobile is the mobile theme.

Inside your options, you may have to turn signatures on in order to see other's signatures whenthey post.

For some people you are viewing the board in myBB mode, wherein the username, avatar, and post/joined information is horizontal over the person's post. If you prefer the oTFF style where the information is in a box on the left of each post, go into your User CP into options and turn on "Classic Mode."

I'll add more as I think of them.

I know most people don't care.

But uh...

Who re-Banned Nick?

When the forum got made Shiro gave him a two week temp ban, it expired, but Nick never came over.

I saw it after it expired so I know it did.

I saw one of nicks posts recently and it said he was banned again.

I checked Moderation for a report and didn't find anything.

Shirotsume, accidentally. It was meant to be a temp-ban, but since he used the admin panel and placed him in the "Banned" user group before finding the moderator ban options it would up being permanent.

I've fixed this.

Wait, wait. I fixed that, I removed him from the banned user group when I switched him to temp ban. And I've checked his account recently and it was unbanned and a member of the registered user group.

You sure nick wasn't just talking out of his ass?

He was in the Banned group. Chances are good you moved his displayed user group to "same as actual" and forgot to move his actual group. That, or you forgot to save the change. Either way, when I checked his profile he was banned, and there wasn't a mod report.

His account said banned.

And his name was crossed out.

On here.

And he hasn't logged into his account since the forum was forked.

And Wata just confirmed his name was in the banned list.

I'm goddamn confused then. I literally just checked his account like two days ago, because we were talking about nick, and he very much wasn't banned.

After much too much delaying, I've finalized the list of forum alterations. The butcher's bill is as follows:

Ah My Goddess, Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu and Tenchi Muyo are all being folded into Anime/Manga.

Love Hina and Mahou Sensei Negima Fanfiction are being folded into "Ken Akamatsu" works. Unlimited is left unsaid but ultimately implied

Super Robot Taisen is going to the Games section.

Lastly, how dotHack will be divided is being left up to Cosgrove; the numerous forms the franchise has taken over the years leaves me uncertain what to do with it, as the last poster of any note in the section I think he has the most investment in it. Most of it will go to Games.

I've posted notices in the unused boards as to this effect.

If you have suggestions about where specific threads should go or want to make sure a thread isn't lost in a sea of genericness, talk about it here. If you'd like to try to save a sub-forum, act now, start a thread in Suggestions.

In a bit of good news, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha will be getting a forum at the same time. If you could compile a list of threads that need to be moved out of Anime and Manga I'd appreciate it.

EDIT: Unrelatedly, I found the Reputation controls. We'll talk about that tomorrow.

What about World of Darkness? That's so dead the last post is a joke thread about someone taking it over since it had been dead for a year.

I still think each forum should be kept in their own subforums within their new generic subforum, because just throwing all their threads in there together will be an unorganized clusterfuck and it'll be impossible to ever undo this merge if the series ever gets popular again.

The only reason I've heard not to is that it'll make them less visible, but a bunch of generically named threads from different fandoms mixed together isn't exactly very visible either.

I'd say put all of the existing dothack stuff in one place, rather than split it up.

As most of the content in the section is game related, I'd say its fine to put it all in Games, though I'd say anyone in the future who posts a story related to one of the anime/manga, such as SIGN, should be allowed to post in Anime if they want and not get any shit for it.

The reason for that is, generally speaking, most people I know who know of dothack know it from one of the anime and don't know of it as a game franchise.

I'm with Nova on this one; best to keep it all in their own subforums when moved.
