Stupid Warlock Question(s)

As I've mentioned on a couple other threads, I'm just getting back into playing WoW ( and will eventually stop procrastinating and joing Gafgar's guild of the living dead *coughs* ) but have a question: I haven't really played since Burning Crusade, and back then a warlock could set up a bar to control their demon and it's actions. I'm probably just being stupid/blind but I can't seem to find the option to open up that action bar anymore in Cataclysm. So, my question is: does this bar still exist, and if so where the hell is the option to open it? Beyond that, I'd be happy for any and all suggestions on running a successful warlock ( casual play, I don't spend all my non-work/sleep hours playing after all ) seeing as I've never really played the class before ( not past lvl 10 anyways )

you dont get the bar until lvl10. until then your pet just acts as if it was on defensive.

Oh...well that explains that. Really was a stupid question I suppose, thanks for clearing that up for me! Any other pearls of wisdom you might be willing to part with in regards to being a warlock?

Hmm... go Demonology for leveling.

Once you get them, ALWAYS have your healthstone and soulstone ready for use.

Switch to Demon Armor and Fel Armor as soon as you get those spells. Demon Armor is MUCH better than Demon Skin; and Fel Armor is superior to that as it regenerates 2% of your health over time, which is IMMENSELY usefu, and also increases your Spell Power!

If you think an encounter might get dicey, use your soulstone on yourself.

If you're going dungeoning, toss that soulstone at the healer.

As for how to play... it's going to depend heavily on your play style.

Personal Opinion:

Personally, I like my pet taking most of the attention, so I followed Demonology, which gives me access to the Felguard, which is a pretty good minion if you can get used to it. It has a stun with Axe Throw, it's Charge stuns too I think, and it's FelStorm attack is a nice AOE which rips through most enemies, but I've had my Warlock and Felguard since before Cata, so I've forgotten what abilities it starts with.

You do now have the option, once you get the command bar, to mess around with their abilities and arrange it's bar however you like. You can also command it to move to specific locations.

I'd suggest getting into cooking, as the stamina/spell power buffs you can get from it can sometimes be the difference between dying and just barely surviving.

I'd also suggest taking mining, as the stamina bonuses from it can be helpful as well, and if you don't take jewelcrafting or blacksmithing, you can sell the mats you gather on the AH for some nice cash.

Jewelcrafting can be nice, since you'll be able to USE those mats you collect, and you'll also be able to create items that aren't easy to get via quests. Socket Gems can also be handy if you can get up to making them.

If you do follow a profession, I'd strongly suggest going to Wow Professions to get an idea of how to progress. I'd consider it a guideline, if you find yourself with different items that you can make than they suggest, but it's competent.

Otherwise, the other profession I'd suggest would be Tailoring, since bags are always sold at a premium and being able to make better gear than what you have is nice... when you can manage it.

Dps-wise, go with tailoring, enchanting and jewelcrafting, or any combination thereof. Mining is good for the JC mats, but that stamina bonus is useless unless you're a tank.

Levelling is a toss-up between Demonology and Affliction. I prefer the latter for the somewhat better passive healing.

EDIT: Use Fel Armor over the others once you get it. Stamina isn't that important; you'll be getting enough from gear that you don't need to worry about dying unless you over-aggro tons o' mobs, and that extra 600 hp doesn't really matter in the long run.

Really, the stamina boost from Mining is just a flat bonus? I always thought they were minor, but scaled, like .5% or something. :(

Ah well.

If you do decide to be a Jewelcrafter, though, it only makes sense to take up Mining, as buying mats for that profession off the Auction House will vary WILDLY pricewise and unless you have a friend or an alt that can gather mats, it's insanely expensive.

Even if the mining Stamina bonus scales, it's still mediocre for a cloth dps class unless you need the JC mats or intend to go into Blacksmithing.

From level one to level ten the Warlock summons don't have a control bar anymore. Ditto for Hunter pets as well now. Don't worry though, you'll hit level ten rather quickly.

Demonology appears to be the best talent spec for questing. They lowered the needed level for dualspeccing to 30 now, so if you want to dualspec Affliction and get a taste for it you can do that within about a week or two if you're as slow at leveling as I am.

Professions are entirely up to you. I've got a spectrum of alts who, combined, have all the available professions, so if you need help with something I can probably jump on one and get some stuff for you. Bags, for example.

Also note that they changed Soul Gems quite a bit. Not sure on all the specifics though.
