Summer Story Spectacular!

Ah Summer. The time of year when people break out of their day to day routine, and go out and have some fun. Maybe a trip to the beach, maybe a cross country road trip, or maybe just taking a breather and having ice cream with some friends you haven't seen in awhile. Truly, despite the god awful heat (for me anyways,) it's one of the best times of the year.

So, why not have a fanfic contest to celebrate it?

I'm aiming to start the contest on July First, and would like a few additional judges. Not sure if there will be a specific theme, or just summer in general. Probably stick to a basic scoring rubric, spelling, grammar, story, theme, and judge's preference or something similar.

Nothing serious, just an excuse to have some fun and write a short story or two. Depending on interest, might have a few additional summer contests, but either way, it should be fun.

So, anyone interested?

Hmm. I'll bite. I'm still working on edits to my original story, but I should be able to knock something together.

So you're going to try to have a writing contest on my birthday. Given how my summer has gone so far, might I suggest a theme or two? I can try to keep it simple, cause it will at least give me something to amuse myself with.

Suggestions are always appreciated, as long as they pertain to the overall idea of Summer!

Hm... might delay it a couple of days for the weekend... Might make it easier for everyone.

Hmmm... summer themes? Maybe these will help?

- Summer Rain - Belinda Carlisle (especially appropriate if live in MidWest)
- Summer's Comin' - Clint Black
- You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) - Meat Loaf
- Summer Of '69 - Bryan Adams
- Sloop John B - The Beach Boys
- The Hollies - Bus Stop
- Frozen - In Summer
- Julien Neel - In The Good Old Summer Time
- Let 'em Burn (Frozen 'Let it Go' Parody) (considering CA's strict water use policy it is liable to happen)
- Annette Funicello - Pajama Party
- Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello - Beach Party Tonight

Heh... can you picture either of those last two with anime characters present....

EDIT: One more.
- Somewhere Near Japan - The Beach Boys

Summer celebrations is one of the themes I'd suggest. Whether they be birthdays, holidays, or other festive occasions, a celebration during the summer is often quite memorable.

Barbeque is another theme I'd suggest. Yes, barbeque. You don't even need to celebrate to appreciate some food cooked on a grill.

I've really been slacking on my own personal writing, this competition might be a good way to get back into the habit. I would definitely give this a go.

I like the BBQ/summer celebration theme.

I'd like to do a fic just for the site's count, but this month is just going to be too busy. Hope others have fun writing them.

Well, a little bit late for the intended start point, but this is summer, so I'm not going to fret overmuch.

Theme: Celebrating Endings

Whether it is finally wiping out the scourge of humanity, or just getting through another year of school, it deserves celebration. You've accomplished something you've invested a lot of time into, and deserve a reward both for your accomplishment, and the time you invested into it, regardless if you succeeded by a wide margin or simply by the skin of your teeth. Sure, there's always another enemy looming, or another test after the Fall semester starts, but for now, revel in your accomplishments, you deserve it!

Deadline: 48 hours from now, or approximately2 AM Central Time, July 3rd. Planning to launch an immediate second prompt for the Fourth of July Weekend, but we'll see how this goes first.

Good luck everyone!

Gonna have to bow out this time. I've got called by the government about some personal stuff and I'm going to have to spend the week gathering up various papers and records for the meeting.

Fucking bureaucracy...

Join the club. In my mind, all the more reason to celebrate when the chance arises.

Well, nothing yet, so I guess we'll extend the deadline to midnight tomorrow. Let everyone enjoy their fourth of July (if you're into that kind of thing.)

Was there a word-limit on this? I'm trying to get something up for tonight.

No word limit, minimum or maximum. Given the short notice for this, I figured keeping it flexible would be better,

Well, another complete failure for one of my attempts at a competition.

Guess I'm not as cool as Watashiwa...

Sorry, but like I said I just have too much to do (and I suspect some may be grateful for that).

I'm doing too much OT to write right now.

On a side note, maybe after this is over I'll do a trollfic contest

Okay, excused the very delayed post... but I really like this idea.

My suggestion: Make the deadline the end of Aug.

So basically, give the summer to write something. Makes it easier for people to participate, come up with ideas, get RL sorted out and actually write something. Lol

But seriously, I think a writing competition with a theme is a lovely idea. Just... don't make the deadline to restrictive. :)

It's a matter of give and take. If you make it too restrictive, your discourage people from joining in. If you make it too lenient, people procrastinate and neglect it.

Still, since there are no results for the short term...

Alright, the new deadline is September First. That gives everyone about three weeks to get their story together. Official Deadline is August 31st, Central Standard time. Theme remains the same: Celebrating Endings.

Get to work people!!!
