Tech Support Plea - Secure Boot Violation

Pretty much what the title says; I'm running Windows 7 on my desktop, it updated automatically when I went to turn it off last night, finished the updates when I turned it on this morning, I turned it off before heading to work, and when I tried turning it on again tonight all I'm getting is a little red box in the middle of the screen that says;

"Secure Boot Violation

The system found unauthorized changes on the firmware, operating system, or Uefi drivers.

Press OK to run the next boot device, or enter directly into bios setup if there are no other boot devices installed.

Go to Bios setup, advanced, boot, and change the current boot device into other secured boot devices."

I'm not particularly computer-savvy, so any help would be appreciated.

Ummm... I don't recall Windows 7 really supporting Secure Boot. I've heard it's theoretically possible, but it's a pain in the ass with windows 7.

Go into the BIOS and see if UEFI secure boot is turned on. If it is, try turning it off and see if it works. You may also have to enable "Launch CSM" in there as well. Some may have a setting for "Enable legacy boot".

If those don't work, download the BIOS for that machine/motherboard from the manufacturer's web site, create the thumb drive exactly as the manufacturer says, and follow their instructions EXACTLY for reflashing the BIOS. If you fail to follow instructions here, you may create a brick out of your machine.

It kind of sounds like your machine tried to update you to windows 10 and failed badly. Did the updates take an exceptionally long time? If you haven't turned off "receive recommended updates the same way I do Important ones" in the windows update settings, then Microsoft may have tried to update you to windows 10 behind the scenes.

Thanks for responding, but after staring in stark terror at the arcane workings of my PC for the past ten minutes I've decided to just take it to the local tech lads in the morning.

Ugh...so much for gaming over the weekend.

That sucks. It was probably Microsoft's invasive Windows 10 BS.

If it wasn't basically the only real platform for games on PC, I wouldn't even have Windows installed.

Never liked how Vader sounded in the Japanese dub. Mostly because they took out his breathing sound effect and the mechanical effect on his voice, plus his voice isn't deep enough. He's not high pitched or girly sounding, but he loses a lot of his menace in the Jap Dub version of Star Wars because he doesn't sound nearly as scary as he does in the English version. Most of that isn't the actor's fault, but still, the Japanese really miss out on half of what makes Vader so intimidating in Star Wars with the dub they got.
Did you mean to post that in the Guess who's dead now. thread?

Yes. I probably had two tabs open and didn't realize it.

Agreed.

The windows 10 upgrade BS makes me want to go punch some policy makers at Microsoft.  I have a notebook that came with win10, and I really can't complain about its functionality.  I DO have problems with the upgrade BS policies, the fact that Microsoft seems to have partially crippled windows update for win 7 in hopes of frustrating people into upgrading, win10's invasiveness when it comes to data collection (they admit they may capture private information during crash dumps/reporting), and the whole fact that the OS was designed to be just like iOS and Android in that they just had to have a store that they can guarantee a revenue stream through.

In the end, they just come across as looking desperate and greedy.

Which, to be honest, I think they are, being that the PC market is taking repeated knees to the groin quarter after quarter.  I think the gamers and corporate contracts are the biggest customers now and neither are in a hurry to upgrade.

I guarantee you I at least could not possibly do my job from a tablet or smartphone or other gadget level device. I currently have 2 side by side 21" widescreen displays and really I need more.

And if my mother's tablet gadget level device is any indicator of the quality, I'll pass on buying those hunks of junk... She has had her current tablet, an actual intel built one, with android installed, since December, and it keeps chewing through and burning out ac adapters, its battery life is about 1 1/2 hours, and the speaker on full is barely audible to the point it needs a clamp on external speaker (probably the cause of the battery life issue, but not the rest). She uses it for email, games, and video streaming. And to top it off, like most Android devices, it is very spotty in hardware support for USB devices.

I'll keep getting business grade 15"+ notebooks for my main systems. 100x the capability and versatility.

Tentatively, I plan on selectively switching my systems to Windows 10 and Office 2016 sometime within the next couple months at least on the 2 notebooks/1 netbook as I'm hitting the 1 year mark on my mass hardware upgrades now. I may wait until the next stable full release of 10 is out, I may not. I also may up the 2 notebooks/1 netbook hard drives to more though. The 2 HTPC's I actually don't overly see the urge, but if I do it would only be Windows 10, not Office that gets put on them. Those I may upgrade the MB's... they were early generation i3's, and have served very well, but are pretty much maxed out.

If Windows 10 gives me enough headaches, I may try a Ubuntu variant again... not looking forward to it if it comes to it though, my track record with Linux has been pretty poor, to date my best smoothest experience was with a variant that no longer exists. I'd have to immediately replace FireFox though... I've had more than my fill of that browser.
