@[NuitTombee], @[chronodekar] Double post for which I apologize, but did we make anymore progress on altering the logo? I'll be making a global announcement soon, and put the altered versions Nuit is working on in it.

@[Watashiwa] ftr, Since you didn't see my response in IRC, I'm not sure where you change the logo on myBB, since I only saw the admin control panel once for two weeks almost 9 whole months ago, but I suspect it's either under it's own section, or it's a part of the theme section.

@[Watashiwa]

Altered how? I hadn't actually given it much thought since my previous post. Did you want just the logo for a banner or maybe the logo and 'The Fanfiction Forum'? Just 'TFF' as a banner like chrono posted is also a possibility.

No one's given me any input so ... :huh.:

You could always make a competition for it. And have users submit their own attempts then poll the people to see which they'd want.

Edit: Eh here's some with the logo if that's what you meant.

Just confirming that I can see these 3 images. My vote is for the top and bottom one. For that matter, I think the top one might work just fine on both themes.

@[NuitTombee]: Yeah, I meant making the banners. I was thinking of some kind of contest myself, but I doubt too many people would enter. Might be worth doing anyway.
Why not just highlight this thread as an announcement? If enough folks have alternate suggestions, we can make it into a contest. Otherwise, let's just go with NuitTombee's "submission". Would save you the trouble of organizing the event too.

I'd definitely vote for the top one.

Meh... I'm still confused why everyone thinks it a big deal... not like it really affects site functionality.

I'm indifferent, leaning toward the idea of not really needing one.

My only question is whether it is ok to usurp the TFF steam group logo.

We adopted the Steam logo from something that was done here, IIRC. And both vm and myself are the admins of the Steamgroup, and we're fine with the emblem being used here.

Anyway, I'll be making an announcement about the logo contest sometime this week. I'll stock up on prizes during the Steam sale (donations welcome and greatly appreciated!)

Having a "The image you are requesting..." error at the top of every page annoys me. I'd like something there.

No... I understood not wanting to see the error. That should be fixed. Sorry if what I was saying was being interpreted as anything else.

My point was I did not see the point of having a logo, or more accurately putting time and effort into one. Or why the old or existing logo could not merely be redone to show again, thus getting rid of the error and not needing a new logo.

We are slowly turning into an odd bureaucracy of some sorts now. You know how most governments work, right? Even if it would be good (or more efficient) to get something done/replaced, it won't happen until the until utterly breaks down. And now that our logo has broken down (outside the US, anyway), it provides us an opportunity to re-design it.

Yes, the quicker solution is to just replace the old one back, but then no-one would notice a change. Why not have a whole forum-wide discussing over this matter, while we're at it? :p

Personally, I'm just annoyed of seeing a "image missing" error message, but after putting up with it for so long, can wait another few weeks for the matter to get sorted out.

Or you know, fixing the link so the old logo is visible, and when there's a consensus about the new one, change it.

Frankly speaking, it's more of a morale issue than anything else. We need a logo, if only because that cements our legitimacy as a "proper" forum. Logos are important because it gives us something to band around. If you really don't care for a logo, you can just as easily remove it with a script.

Edit: Why do you think companies obsessively design and then copyright their logo? It's because it's their ground, their foundation, their support. Without a proper logo, we're not much of anything, but with one, we /are/ someone, even if it's only on the internet.

Bah... we are 'someone' (more accurate would be to say we are an entity), regardless of logo.

The counter argument to your post is companies make money off their logo, it is their brand recognition... that logo gets used in emails, company letterhead, business cards, advertising, internet sites, surveys, and convention banners and crap. It is central to their public image. So it only makes sense to copyright it.

We don't really do any of that, and the forum is here regardless...

I've never been against logos and banners per se, I just fail to see the point. what we had/have was IMHO fine. Any of those hybrid ones using the steam group I was fine with. But not everyone cares...

Marketing reps would *hate* me.

Since we have a bureaucracy now, I'm assuming mid-2015 :p

We're actually forming a sub-committee to decide on the implementation schedule. This input from the community is most valuable. It shows a severe lack of understanding about our processes.

First we need to form a market analysis team. To find out what people want from a logo? What do they expect from a logo? Will they expect the logo to do anything for them? If so, what? Also, will people try to feed the logo? Will its health be affected? Are peanuts sufficient? Do we need to supplement with water-melons? How will we store all this in a sanitized manner? Should anyone contact the Health department?

The good news is that some of these questions have answers. The bad news is that we got those answers after signing confidentiality agreements, so we can't talk about it publicly. Still, without naming names, I _can_ tell you that we're stumped over a particular expectation about 'inspiration'. It complicates things a lot, you see. We've actually started a sub-sub-committee to find out the answer. Their report should come back after a few months.

This isn't to say that we're just sitting around twiddling our thumbs in the meantime. No. That's impossible as we're sitting on our hands. It would be very awkward to twiddle your thumbs while sitting on your hands, wouldn't you agree? There isn't much space to twiddle them and ... OH - THAT'S JUST DISGUSTING! Stop doing that! Pervert.

Oh dear. This raises a few more problems. For starters, we need to re-evaluate our etiquette rules. At the very least, no more sitting on hands. At least, no more sitting on hands other than your own. What would the public think if they saw? Our ill-earned reputation would be ruined!

...

-sigh-

I'm sorry you had to hear all that. Wasn't intended as such, but I hope I've impressed on you on the sheer amount of work we have to do. And there's just so much of it ...

@chronodekar

Sadly, I've seen something like that in real life at least 2 times through my career in computer programming.

The first was deciding on a new office microwave (it broke), we had 3 meetings on it, and people actually argued color, handle, brand, the need for a popcorn and speed buttons, etc...

Early on I had suggested the idea that maybe all we needed was one to fit the counter top, but I was sadly talked down and they went on from there.

In the end, after all that was decided, it was agreed to send 2 people out one day to pick it up. It took a week and a half.

The second was we were working on a huge project at the time, and myself and two others were ordered to use a specific book, and go over the meeting notes of another internal group using it on a different project.

The thing to consider was this was big on department interaction and meeting decisions all being documented at official meetings.

I had pointed out that the particular book was meant for *much* bigger projects and the format would actually bog us down in procedures.

sadly I was overruled by management. And we started plowing through those notes.

Apparently that other team actually thought the same way and were bored one day... because we found evidence that they had a meeting to discuss what food and drink was allowed at meetings. We found evidence they had brought up, disussed, made a vote, documented the vote, and added it to the rules that any drink taken into a meeting had to be more than 60% water based....

I kid you not... myself and the other two going through this were flabbergasted...

Those were a long time ago. These days, I tend to be quiet at meetings and just watch the paint peel

He,he. Looks like I've still got it! :) The snippet was inspired from the "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" books.

@PCHeintz72,

That is just ... I don't really know what to call it. But I was showing my brother this thread and he got a few chuckles out of it. :D
