Actually... yeah... a feed needs no login, it needs no real maintenance except to be updated with the news or blurb, needs no separate site to go to to access, it is automatic if the user has their feed reader set to auto update.
All it is, is a raw file, in a specific XML variant format, sitting in some known static location on a server. Easy stuff.
I use RSS/ATOM feeds for monitoring tons of stuff, examples:
- Web comics, like Outsider
- Anime Music Video feeds from AMV.ORG
- Tech news, like Ziff Davis PC Magazine
- FanFiction authors, from FanFiction.NET, MediaMiner, FicWad.Com, etc... (email alerts in comparison suck)
- Category feeds from FanFiction.NET and FicWad.Com
- Other news services like National GeoGraphic, Weather, and Animal Planet
- Some software programs I use their makers have RSS feeds giving notice of updates, issues, etc...
