A boy in India gets lost from his birth parents and siblings.

But he ends up in the United States adopted by a family. They adopt another boy from India ass well. His adopted father has a tough love attitude and his mother gets overwhelmed by his fathers atmosphere. It doesn't help that he is gay and doesn't know / suppresses it. Eventually he has had enough and decides to enlist in the army.

While in the Army he refuses to commit violence, result of being raised by his father, and some violent break downs in the past. He goes to war and saves a shit ton of lives and is hailed a hero.

When he gets out he gets a letter from someone in his past he had a fling with in highschool who he had a love hate relationship with. He returns to him, and expresses due to don't-ask-don't-tell he has been suppressing his sexuality. His new lover is surprised but comforts him.

His new lover's family however has been in dire financial straights, and he is trying to save his families fishing business. They band together to rob the same banks that are trying to rob his lover's family of his business. Meanwhile his adopted father dies, and he decides to attend his funeral with his Mother, Brother, Nephew, Partner and recently adopted kids. Shortly afterwards his PTSD from both the War & hiss father pushes him over the edge to enjoy robbing more for the thrill of it than the actual reward and goes on a shooting spree. He gets his lover and his adopted children killed fleeing, but he survives.

Devastated he moves out to L.A. intent on following his dreams to become a movie star. There he meets a struglng academic trying to write ground breaking research on languages, aliens, and time travel. They fall in love, but go their own ways following their own dreams. They both become wildly successful, one in movies, and one in the relatively small field of linguistics. Both against the stigma of their race & sexuality. The linguist meets and falls in love with someone else, although it is a more shallow love. They are both happy that they have achieved their dreams. Unfortunately the death of his former lover and his adopted children loom over him.

Until his adopted brother dies of cancer, leaving his nephew in his care. After a couple of backward weeks living in his former home he can't get out of his own head and the deaths of his former family. This entire experience tears open wounds from his past. He obsessively begins searching for where he was born. His linguist lovers wife also dies, and he seeks out his past lover. They both end up moving to LA leaving his nephew in the care of his adopted Mother. He promises to come home every other weekend to fish. He still is searching for his birth parents.

Aliens come and the linguist gets recruited to try to help figure out how to communicate with them. He eventually learns their language enough for that, and even more. He uses his abilities to prevent all out nuclear war between all of the nations with both each other and the aliens. He now has the ability to see into his past and the future, and essentially live his life all at the same time. He sees in the future that his lover finds out where his parents were born. He also sees more tragedy in their life, they will adopt a child who will die of the same cancer his adopted brother and adopted father died of.

The linguist sees that once he tells the movie star / war hero the truth of the fate of their child he will leave. He holds off telling him until after reuniting him with is birth mother. His birth brother, birth father, birth sister being dead.

The movie star then learns from his lover the truth about their newly adopted daughter. He can't handle it do to all of the loss he already have and that his lover would choose to do this knowing what will happen. He once more leaves, seeking for peace elsewhere.
