Evangelion The Asuka in your Mind

After the battle with the Third Angel, Ikari Shinji found himself floating in a void. The girl from earlier, Rei, was there, too, as was a red-haired girl. All three were naked.

"Hello," the redhead said, "I am Soryu Asuka Langely, and you've already met Ayanami Rei."

"I-is this a dream?" he asked. He'd had lots of dreams about naked girls before, but they weren't usually this weird.

"Yes and no," said Asuka. Well, that was helpful. "You're dreaming, but its not just a dream. The Evangelions are connected, and thus, carry echos of the minds that touch them. What you see are echos in your mind of the real Asuka and Rei, and the next time either of us gets into our Eva's, we will have echos of you in our minds."

"R-really?" he asked.

"It'll be hard to believe at first," she told him, "especially when you haven't gotten used to it enough for us to talk when your awake. You can talk to Ritsuko about it, though, and she can try to explain it. Over time, we become more like our real selves, until our minds become connected. Then, the echos you in our heads will merge with the real you, and each of us will merge with the real us, so we can communicate telepathically. It happened to Rei and me years ago."

"Wow," said Shinji, though he still thought this was a weird dream. Probably not a sex dream, though, which was pretty disappointing.

"Talkative, aren't you?" she snarked. "Rei doesn't talk much, either, at first. She has to get to know you. Thank you for saving her, by the way. She won't admit it, but she doesn't want to die, again." Rei looked over at her, and sort of had an expression, for a second. Not one he could read, though.

"Again?" Shinji asked. This wasn't exactly convincing him it wasn't just a bizarre dream.

"Its a long story, but she was attacked a few years ago, hurt pretty badly, her heart stopped, and we couldn't connect for months," Asuka told him. "Sometimes, I can still feel the hands on my throat."

Yui, Kyoko, and Naoko might or might not show up, but if Naoko does, and isn't very apologetic, I suggest that Asuka will get rather violent.

So, any takers?

OK, I know the dialogue sucks, but is the concept good, at least?

Ok first time I saw that. I kind of liked the concept of the Eva pilots and the echoes working that way, and eventually having telepathic contact, though the thought of what that 'merger' is going to do emotionally to Shinji is rather amusing (the passiveness of Rei and the well hot bloodedness of Asuka etc). Its probably also the first time that a male has been included, so would be interesting to have a scene with Asuka's reaction with naked Shinji. She grew up with this and was probably talking to Rei Echo for ages even before they merge, but how will she deal with even fairly passive Shinji, and how has Rei and Asuka's character altered would be quiet something to explore.

I was hoping for more before making a determination... this is barely over a screenful long on my system.

In any case, the concept for the most part seems fine, but... I would find it hard to believe that Rei nor Ritsuko would not have mentioned this to Gendo or Fuyutski, or Asuka mention it to her own people at Nerv Germany.

The problem with *that* is I can see Gendo going to great lengths to get this cut or otherwise ended. He cannot monitor it or control it, and needs Rei in a certain mindset... a mindset she is almost certain to not have with this connection. Same for Shinji.

Each pilot has differing knowledge, with Rei's the most extensive, and Asuka the most training skills. combined mentally, they could be quite dangerous.

There's a simple solution for that. Dreams and places like them are quickly forgotten upon waking. Subconsciously, they'll know and understand, but consciously, they'll have no idea why they're growing closer, knowing more. They won't realize there's anything odd about it unless someone points it out, of course. Meanwhile, Gendo's going crazy trying to figure out why they're changing, why they aren't reacting to each-other like they should be. He doesn't want to do anything rash like bring out a new Rei until he knows what's causing it, of course, but nothing seems to make sense. Instigating events that would normally drive them apart quite often get bantered over or draw them closer together.

Of course, eventually, the full link snaps into place and they figure out what's going on. In their initial panic, they probably blab without thinking about the fact that they might be overheard. Asuka, trying to reject the connection out of habit, agrees with Rei that they should take it to the Commander. Shinji isn't fooled, and it fits with Rei's opinion so she doesn't say anything.

Gendo, of course, bullshits it as some kind of Angel thing and quarantines them so he can figure out how to cut it off... while starting the process of picking two more pilots, since the two he has aren't as replaceable as Rei and all of them have to go. This is a bad idea. The connection only gets stronger as they communicate through it, and it's impossible not to broadcast their issues (and thus be forced to deal with them) over an extended period of time.

Then, of course, there's Rei. She picks up many things very quickly, and can't hold onto the secrets she knows for more than a few days. That starts quite the debate.

Of course, eventually events have to move forward. You can do it the slow way... have an Angel attack, have them insist on not going back into quarantine and on Gendo answering a few questions, which he's forced to to a certain extent until he can figure out the problem and get fresh pilots.

Or the fast way. Gendo's found the problem, but he can't cut it while they're still hooked up. In a miscalculation on his part, he brings Rei out to die first. That the first question out of her mouth is why he needed to abandon Shinji in such a cruel manner only affirms that this needs to be done in his mind. What he doesn't count on is all three Evangelions going apeshit. They get restrained, but not quite quick enough... the quarantine cells were broken wide open, and Shinji and Asuka (after they manage to stop screaming and stand up) beat a hasty retreat.

Being entirely unable to control the Evas with them alive makes their elimination a priority, and they end up on NERV's Most Wanted list. Or something like that. With a little of Rei's secrets and a lot of luck, they manage to get the hell out of Dodge before the city can be locked down. They vanish into the wilderness. It only being a matter of time until another Angel shows up, the whole city is worried. Misato is suspicious, Ritsuko is wondering how she should feel about this, Kaji's wondering how best to manipulate this situation.

Due to the possible threat of Angels, Gendo may revive another Rei... and have her re-link in a few days and recover the knowledge that was lost... or he may not. In which case, he'll have a pissed off Rei climbing out of the Reiquarium and, when she realizes that a manhunt is the case, probably getting biblical on his ass. Or, you could have her emerge in an emergency... an Angel shows up and the Evas are still frozen. She uses the secrets she knows to unfreeze them, and the Evas head up and fight seemingly of their own volition, if a bit clumsily.

And I'm babbling. In any case, it's easy enough to let them not remember it until the full connection snaps into place.

That would not work... Shinji was speciifcally told Ritsuko knew about it and he could talk about it with her.

Canon Ritsuko at this point in series is loyal to Gendo... no way would she have kept this from him. If she is, I definately want to read why she would since her loyalty is a critical plot point to the entire events of series.

Dot dot dot. I'm pretty sure the above snippet wouldn't work with my suggestion for many reasons. I was suggesting an alternate route entirely. I'm a bit sleep-deprived, so excuse me for thinking that would be obvious.

My thought was that Gendo knows, but either can't do anything about it (which probably means he needs Asuka specifically for something), or has some reason he doesn't want to stop it. The latter either requires a different Gendo, or a different scenario in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which gives Gendo's plan an advantage if the Children can do this.

Another possibility is that Yui is the commander (doesn't fit the snippet, but the concept is more important to me than the snippet is), which may or may not mean that Gendo's soul is in one of the Evas.
