Harry Potter The Betting Pools thread

Its something of a trope in HP fanfiction, that the students, teachers, or both, have one or more betting pools about Harry and his associates, and other people/events at Hogwarts. Commonly, its about who he'll end up with, and sometimes how many, although I think I've seen one where they were betting on when Snape would push a student to far, and suffer actual consequences for his bullying (not sure of the author, title, or whether I did, in fact, see it).

This is a catch-all thread for ideas involving Betting pools at Hogwarts, or other schools that you might have Harry attend - or at wherever he works after finishing school.

I wonder how canon Harry would react to finding out in, say, Fifth Year, that there was a betting pool among the Professors, about what will happen to this DADA Professor, and how involved Harry will be (or something sillier, like who he'll end up with).

- Canon Harry? Mostly he'd mope about it, probably to the point where Hermione would be annoyed enough to go along with whatever plan he and Ron came up with to futilely get hurt attempting to break into what ever teacher's lounge the contest was being monitored in.

How would teenage Lily, in 4th or 5th year, react to a betting pool about how many times she'd slap which Marauder in a week?

Ok, I'll freely admit that I saw "betting pools" and started looking for Toltiir lounging around a Mimir's well.

Then I looked for a few of the stories from Metroanime series...now GaelicDragon feels old. :p

---

You could do a crackfic where Harry off-hand hears about a betting pool and slowly learns one fact...in Hogwart's, there is very little that one can do that their isn't a pool on.

If it is before 4th year, Harry's reaction to Neville being the ringmaster too most of the betting pools at Hogwart's might be interesting.

Or the fact that Hermione considers her luck so bad that she always bets against Harry so that the situation turns out right.

"Legendary Sucker" Hermione? Could work, I suppose... But Ron's not nearly cool or smart enough to be either a Jiraiya or Orochimaru type.

Super Pervert Harry would be awesome though.

I can imagine a betting pool based on Harry's detentions. Snape is of course the odds-on favorite, and has escaped being DQ'ed from being in the pool at all only by the fact that some weeks Harry actually does manage to escape. The top-end longshot is of course McGonagall... the odds on that payout are ridiculous, but so far, no one's hit.

Thank you, M2J, for putting the image of Harry becoming an internationally acclaimed author of adult works in my mind.

And now I see fangirl!Narcissa.

EDIT: Didn't check the date prior to Chuck's post. Sorry.

Orochimaru!Neville makes a much better fit... Scarily so.

But back to betting pools.

4th year would have "Who is going to be the champion" With Cedric and Harry both coming out of the cup the runner either makes money "Hey, no one bet that BOTH Harry and Cedric would be the champion, so you loose" or "Well shit, does this mean we need to pay out to both bets Gred?"

Definitely imagine "Who gets Harry's first Kiss?"

Possibly even some "Who will be in which house?" But most cases it is very one sided to the house the pureblood parents were in. And no one would bet about an unimportant mudblood.

Betting on Overall OWL and NEWT scores for each house is another option. Or end of the year exam scores.

Hermione would blow the curve a bit, for Harry's year.

And in non-Hermione years, the Ravenclaws win every time, so, not much to bet on.

Harry will probably be dead by the end of Hogwarts. Those stones have lasted a long time, they aren't going to fall any time soon.
