The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Memories

AN: I'm taking creative license with the Zelda timeline, so please don't jump around like monkeys shouting about how I'm not adhering to the alternate dimensions and whatever else.

Link stood outside Hyrule Castle where Ganondorf resided. This situation seemed entirely too familiar to him. Deja vu was undeniable. As he held the small form of Midna, exhausted as she was from breaking the shield that encased the castle, he couldn't help but feel like he had been here countless times before.

Midna sat up wearily. "Link...I destroyed Ganondorf's shield right?"

Link nodded absent mindedly. "Yea Midna...you were great."

The diminutive imp stared at her friends vacant stare. "Link, are you alright?"

"There's something...not right about this Midna. I've been here before."

She lifted an eyebrow in amusement. "Link, it's only been three months since we were last at the castle." She couldn't help but worry though. Link wasn't usually so daft.

Usually.

The Sacred Beast rolled his eyes. "I don't mean now, Midna. It feels like it was so long ago. So long ago that there wasn't a difference between light and shadow."

Midna blinked. "Link, the light and shadow have always..."

Link tuned out the history lesson of the light and shadow. Mostly because of the flash that had overtaken him and the complete lack of Midna's voice anymore.

When he opened his eyes he recognized Hyrule Castle Town. Only it wasn't Hyrule Castle Town. Or at least not as he knew it. He was outside of the massive city, in front of a drawbridge that was lowering fast. As it flattened out, a young Zelda and an older woman sped by on horseback. The child princess turned around, giving the hero a desperate stare, and threw back a sapphire flute looking instrument. Seconds later and an angry Ganondorf came galloping out on a massive black battle steed. The powerful warlock paused to look at him and give a baleful glare.

FLASH

Link was in front of the Master sword, still planted deep into its sacred holding ground. No forest was to be seen. As he picked it up, he felt himself grow to a more natural height.

FLASH

He stood, fighting Ganondorf in a ferocious battle of swords and magic in the Hyrule Castle throne room.

FLASH

"-ink! LINK! Wake up!" Midna's voice cut through the visions.

He opened his bleary eyes and Midna touched his cheek lightly.

"Link..." The Twilight Princess started, sounding fearful. " What just happened?"

Link was panting, sweat pouring over his body. "Midna...we...I can't do this right now."

Midna nodded, she too was exhausted after her transformation into the Fused Shadow Beast.

All at once, determination returned to Links eyes.

"Midna. We're returning to the temple that housed the Master Sword. There is something I need to check out."

The princess turned imp gave him a curious look before she used Zant's cursed artifact to transform Link back into the Sacred Beast and then opened a portal to the temple.

As they materialized back into the world of light, and turned Link back to his human form, Midna asked

"Link, what are we doing here?"

"This temple, Midna," He motioned all around him " holds a power over time. How do you think we were able to recover the mirror shard?"

She only shrugged and floated next to Link. She liked this place. So far away from civilization, she didn't need to worry about being seen. She much preferred this view of Link as opposed to the view his shadow gave.

Link approached the stone holder of the Master Sword.

"Hope this works..." He muttered.

He drove the sword into the stone and held on. The tri-force in his hand glowed and stung a little, as if in protest and the sword started vibrating. As he felt the power being channeled into the legendary weapon come to a climax, he drew it.

The two companions gasped in awe at the beauty of the sword, encased in an aura of silver light. Link nodded to himself and let loose a powerful spin attack.

The light flew from the sword, forming a dome of silver, encasing the Ordon Province even as the scenery all around them changed.

Link let out a sigh of relief. He was in the Master Sword room of the Old Temple. The hero felt a urgent tugging at his arm.

"What?" He asked, but he didn't need her to answer as he turned around.

There was Princess Zelda, in all her gentle, regal beauty, talking with some messenger.

"M'lady. You have received another message and parcel from Link, just as you expected, Majesty."

As Zelda opened her package she gave a gasp of grief.

"Indeed...he has returned my Ocarina."

As she read the letter a sorrowful tear made its way down her cheek.

"Link...when did you have contact with Zelda before we met?" Midna asked. A profound sadness had rooted in her heart at the sight of Zelda's obvious pain. Jealousy too, was beginning to worm its way in. If this exchange was anything to go on, the two holders of the Tri-Force had a deep relationship.

Another type of comprehension was dawning on Link. His visions, this Zelda and her talks of a Link in a Hyrule that must have been from ages past.

"I didn't Midna...At least not in this life time." He half explained to his compatriot. She usually wasn't so daft.

Usually.

The messenger left, Zelda turned to face them.

"Princess." The two breathed as the ruler of ancient Hyrule passed them.

But as she walked past them, there was no indication that she even noticed them.

"Link...she can't see us." Midna said.

Zelda put her hand toward the window and the stairs that Link had used himself not too long ago to retrieve the rod of dominion. Link's Tri-Force of Courage suddenly lit up even as Zelda's Wisdom did the same.

Zelda gasped as she noticed Link at last.

"Link..." she said softly. But as she examined him, confusion reigned in her eyes. "No...you're not the same..."

Gone were the Golden Gauntlets, the mirror shield as well. In their stead were reddish leather gauntlets, and a improved looking Hylian shield strapped to his back. It was...different. But then, she noted to her self, this Hero didn't seem to need the gauntlets that lent their users so much strength. This new Link, while looking much the same in that he was lean, was rippling with muscles.

Then, all at once, it hit her. The destiny of the Tri-Force holders. To reincarnate and maintain balance in the world for the Goddesses. For this Link to be back here...

How far in time has he traveled to reach here...

"Link...why are you here!? It is utter deviance from the Goddesses will for this to be happening!" She meant to sound angry but only conveyed her own misery and desperation.

"Even back this far...You know whats happening to me? Why I'm remembering?" Link asked.

Zelda's eyes widened. "You're remembering!? Oh no...This isn't right at all. Link...for your sake...for Hyrules sake...let go of these memories. It will be much easier for you."

Link actually chuckled. "I thought you knew me, Princess. I shouldn't think that even so long in the past, that I'd be mistaken for someone who might let something drop in favor for an easier choice."

The long dead princess let a small smile grace her lips.

"No...I suppose not." She slowly made her way toward him. When she reached him she gently took his hand in her own, not being able to resist caressing it a bit, even as she pressed the Ocarina of Time into his hand.

"I'm giving this back to you, Hero of Time. I'm sure you will once again make great use of it, whether it be good or terrible."

Link nodded thankfully.

The princess cast her eyes to the floor.

"You might not be the same...but...is there a request I can make of you?"

Link nodded enthusiastically.

"Of course, your majesty."

Slowly, Zelda lifted her head and reached it toward his own and gave him a soft, but firm kiss on his lips.

"It's time for you to return now Link...Perhaps I will too will remember this in your time."

Midna tried to feel jealous of the past incarnation of the Princess of Light, but couldn't muster it. Not after seeing how obviously in love she was with her Link and how it was breaking her to not be with him. If all went to plan, she knew that she would most likely be in that same position.

As the world shattered around them, time returning to its original state, Link fainted with the Ocarina of Time still clutched in his hands.
----------------------------------------------------------

And thats the end of chapter 1. I had to fill in a few spots where I couldn't find pages of the original I had wrote, but I think it worked out rather well.

Please give concrit!

Interesting. I'm guessing this is the "Breaking the Cycle" idea, though I don't know where you'll take it from here.

Nice, although I have no idea what good the Ocaraina will do...

That bit with both Link and Midna thinking about daftness was a clever touch.

Really? You can't imagine what good a magical Ocarina will do? One that can speed up time, slow it down, reverse it by three days? Teleport you places and heal magical afflictions?

Link and Midna will be searching out a lot of artifacts from his past.

Oh, I get it's powers, I just can't see why it would be too important, given that they're already almost done with the whole afair.

Are you sure? After all, the Ocarina manipulates time itself... :evil3:

Magic Cape anyone? :snigger:

How about the Silver Arrows? Better armor that doesn't require rupees? That kind of thing.

*snrk!* It'd be too cliche, but... Fierce Diety Mask.

Bwahahahahahahahah. :evil2:

The Fierce Deity mask will play a huge role in the fic. Though I'd like to think I'm using it in an uncliched manner.
